DEAR FRIENDS... I am writing this to you on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Today marks the 450 th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. If things had gone differently on this day all those years ago, we Catholics might not even be here. At the very least, the history of Christianity would have been very different than we know it. Christian Europe was threatened with invasion from the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire had not lost a naval battle in over one hundred years. The threat was real. The consequences of defeat for Europe and for Christianity would have been dire. Not many of the Christian rulers of Europe recognized the danger. They were too absorbed in their political intrigues and dynastic ambitions. Politics have not changed very much! One ruler of the time, however, stood up with courage and conviction: St. Pius V. This pope of the Dominican Order had led the Church against the onslaught of the Protestant Reformation. He summoned and presided over the Council of Trent whose teachings were to guide the Church over the next four centuries. He, singly handedly, cobbled together a group of nations to combat this threat to Christendom. He called it a Holy League. The League put a together a fleet under a banner blessed by the pope himself and consigned leadership over the fleet to John of Austria. Pope Pius called on all of Christendom to pray the Most Holy Rosary and to beg the intercessions of the Virgin Mary. The battle began early in the morning of October 7. At the upper most portion of the Gulf of Corinth met the two largest naval forces ever assembled: the Ottoman Empire had 280 ships; the Holy League had 212 ships. The Christians were outnumbered in ships and soldiers but not in oarsmen. Sadly, most of the men oaring the galleys of the Ottomans were Christians! Yes, Christians, men who had been captured and enslaved in previous battles with the Ottoman Empire. All of Europe was gripped with terror, expecting the worse and fearing for their future. But the main forces under John of Austria did the unthinkable: they sailed directly into the heart of the Ottoman fleet; the right wing under the command of the Venetian, Giovanni Andrea Doria, did the same. The result was the most unexpected of all. The Holy League decisively won the Battle of Lepanto. The Ottoman Empire, which lost over 200 ships, would not be a threat again for almost two centuries. So outstanding was this victory that Pope Pius V declared a new feast for the universal Church in thanksgiving: The Feast of Our Lady of Victory on October 7. This would soon be known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Interestingly, the Venetian Admiral, Giovanni Andrea Doria, is said to have possessed an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe throughout the battle. Which goes to show: it doesn’t matter exactly what name or title you give her—Our Lady of Victory, Our Lady of the Rosary or Our Lady of Guadalupe. The only truly important thing for us is that we pray to the Virgin Mother of God for her most powerful intercessions. Fr. Mark
QUERIDOS AMIGOS... P. Mark
