If you subtract 10 from 93, you will get 83. More than a simple math test, those numbers roughly reflect the current state of the Church. About 7% of all Catholics are fully engaged, meaning they are strong in their faith, attend Mass and religious events regularly and are involved in the parish through at least one ministry. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are approximately 10% who are disengaged. They have “checked-out” and are no longer event remotely connected. That leaves a whopping 83% that range from being mildly engaged to those are on the verge of falling away. These are sobering statistics that in stark fashion present the challenges we face. I believe that our Knights are in that 7%, which is, of course, a blessing, but it also serves as a reminder of the burden you carry. You are a “weight-bearing” wall. Of course, it is the Holy Spirit that sustains the Church, but in human terms, it is the 7% that carry the hopes and dreams of the Church. That is a lot of responsibility, but it is additionally a summons to remain steadfast. Literally, the Lord is counting on you. Bearing that weight and responsibility can be overwhelming, but it is absolutely vital to continue to be strong. Further, it is a challenge. Jesus spoke of asking the Master to send workers into the vineyard to reap the harvest, to put out into the deep to be “fishers of men.” That summons is as necessary today as it was to the first apostles. We are in the Easter Season in which the Church proclaims again the good news of Resurrection and New Life. Sadly, there are countless, even Catholics, who have not embraced that message and that truth. I invite you, in this holy season, to recommit to the work of the Church, remaining part of the loyal 7% but also determined to win over some of that 83%. The Lord is counting on us! Happy Easter! Msgr. Ken 2

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Michael McGivney Founder of the Knights of Columbus God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
Supreme Chaplain's Monthly Challenge While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.” (Gospel for April 18, Lk 24:36-39) After Jesus rose from the dead, the apostles were confused and afraid. But showing them his wounds, Jesus proved his identity. Whenever we find ourselves confused or fearful, let us remember that Christ is risen, and that it was “by his wounds we were healed” (Is 53:5). If Christ had not suffered and died, he could not have risen from the dead: without Good Friday; there would be no Easter Sunday. May we unite our suffering to Christ’s, rejoice always in his resurrection and base our lives on his peace and presence among us. Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori: This month, ideally on Good Friday, I challenge you to visit your local parish and pray the Stations of the Cross. Second, I challenge you to participate in the Faith in Action Good Friday Family Promotion program to aid your fellow parishioners in remembering Christ’s passion, in anticipation of his resurrection. Questions for Reflection: When you are suffering, do you tend to find yourself forgetting God or drawing closer to him? What does it mean to “offer it up” when we are suffering? How does the reality of Christ’s resurrection offer us comfort, peace and hope during the trials and tribulations of this life? 6

McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, the widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the protection of the faith of the working man of his day. Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to countless millions throughout the world through the efforts and influence of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech you, Heavenly Father, to raise your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our Lord Jesus Christ and His holy mother, Mary and our mother. Amen. 12
