Pathways News from the Eureka Springs United Methodist Church Trinity Sunday A Joyful Community of Faith, loving God by serving all people including the least, the last, and the lost. June 12th 2022 Today is Trinity Sunday, a moment in the life of the church we set aside to remember a doctrine of our faith. The God we worship is the God we experience as “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,” or more inclusively, “Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer” (after all, God is neither male nor female and both sexes are created in God’s image. Though the early church had used a porto-idea of the Trinity from the very beginning (Matthew’s Gospel ends with a Trinitarian formula) it would take 300 years before such an idea to become “of cial.” It was done by committee and imperial decree, but despite this it was the best way of understanding the idea of God as experienced thru the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We did not worship three different gods, and neither did we believe that one was superior to the rest. The followers of Mohammed and the Jews would claim we were simply bad at math; we are to worship only one God. Yet the early Christians knew Jesus was much more than a human-being, but was the very incarnation of the Word. The Spirit, too, was active in their midst, and they needed a way to talk about God in three persons. To be honest, it is almost impossible to talk about the Trinity in any logical and clear way for no matter how we try to articulate it we always end in error. Saint Patrick’s use of the shamrock to teach the Trinity is heretical (God does not have ‘parts’, as the shamrock might lead us to believe). The Trinity is simply a mystery we take on faith; a mystery which allows us to speak of Jesus and the Holy Spirit without demeaning their work. Today is also “UMW Sunday” or “The United Women of Faith” Sunday. They have recently rebranded in order to, “engage newer, younger members and adapt to the changeable circumstances of today’s world while maintaining connections despite the threat of impending schism in the United Methodist Church.” There is over 150 years of tradition, mission, and ministry behind these two names. In recognition for all these women do, we set aside each year a Sunday where they lead the worship service in order to highlight their work. My friend, Kandi Mount, is a deaconess in the United Methodist Church. I have known Kandy for over ten years now and she has dedicated her life to the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. Deaconesses are laity called by God to a lifetime relationship in the UMC for engagement with a full-time vocation in ministries of love, justice, and service. Kandi will be bringing the message this morning, and members of our chapter of the United Women of Faith will be participating in worship in various roles. Next week begins a new sermon series, “Summer School” as we brush up on the basics of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ! fi

June marks the beginning of Kingdomtide, and our Summer Sermon Series is entitled, “Summer School: back to the basics (of faith)”, as we explore the ideas and beliefs we need to return to in order to bring reform and renewal to the Christian church. We’ll look at “Prayer in School”, “Schoolyard Bullies”, “Bonus Points”, “Verbs & Nouns”, “Can’t See the Chalkboard?”, “Too Cool for School”, and “Smoking in the Boys’ Room”. Of course, what stands behind these titles are some important truths we need to get back to. So join us throughout these Summer weeks as we go back to school! Help spread the word about this new ministry. People will be able to text Shower/Laundry “SHOWER” to 479.981.1680 to make arrangements to use our facilities. Ministry Our ministry team will meet them at church between 12 and 2 PM. This is one small way we can help people who are homeless. We need help with our church yard. The weeds are growing, our beds Landscaping need tending, and the yard will soon need mowing. We could hire a landscaping rm, but we could save that money for missions if we had a team of volunteers who would take this project on. Is there someone who feels the call to organize it? If so contact Pastor Blake. In a few weeks we are going to be setting up a time to organize Men’s Group a men’s group. Steve Barnes is graciously offering his cabin on the White River as a place of recreation and rest, and of course we would love to get some organization to help around the church. Be on the lookout for dates and times. Today is United Women in Faith Sunday, and we welcome Deaconess United Women in Faith Kandi Mount to share her story of Love, Justice and Service. Everyone is invited to our next event on June 28 at the Carroll County Electric COOP in Berryville. Dawnland, a documentary about the cultural plight and stolen children of Native Americans, will be shown at 2:00 and 6:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Our Mobile Pantry was held this past Wednesday. We were given 150 Answering the Call food boxes, and within 20 minutes they were all gone. With food prices, gasoline, and other things our friends and neighbors are hurting. Please consider giving a little extra if you can. Together we can all get thru these dif cult and uncertain times. fi fi
Passing the plate is no longer how we collect our offerings. People are invited to come forward during communion to give, but we also offer Giving online giving via our website www.lovespokenhere.org. There is a Vanco option and a PayPal option. We strongly encourage regular givers to set up an automatic withdrawal thru their banks. The mission of the church continues even if you are gone, and we rely on your pledges to keep us going. It’s not often we ask that you surf the web during church, but we do have an online community that is watching us and we want them to be more Online Greeters than just viewers, but active members of our congregation. At the beginning of worship log on to Facebook and give each one a welcome and maybe ask how we can pray for them this week. Theology on Tap is held monthly at the Gotahold Brewery. This month’s topic is forgiveness and how little of it we show as a people and nation. Theology on Tap We will gather again on June 27th. If there is a topic you would like to discuss please shoot me an email: blakelasater@gmail.com Caregivers Support Group will meet in person Tuesday, June 14th at 1:00 Caregivers Support in the Fellowship Hall. In front of the church is a memorial obelisk that was placed there to honor members of the church who passed triumphantly thru death to life- Memorial Obelisk everlasting. However, our goal is not to bear witness simply to harms but also to God’s love by acting boldly to change those harms. Bold action, like faith, takes courage. Our bravery is inspired by God’s love and our powerful commitment to improve the lives of women, children and youth. United Women in Faith works for justice through compassionate service and advocacy to change unfair policies and systems that harm women, children and youth— from racial and gender injustice to economic inequality, climate issues and more. fl fi
