HOLY COMMUNION JULY 18, 2021 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WE GATHER IN GOD’S PRESENCE I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.” (Psalm 122:1) PRELUDE AND PREPARATION Prepare your heart for worship: read the introduction, look up the Scrip- ture readings and pray. You may use this prayer: Direct and control us, O Lord, always and everywhere with heavenly light; that we may both discern with clear vision and share with worthy effect the Mys- tery which You have willed us to partake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. INTRODUCTION Built on the living foundation of the apostles and prophets, the local con- gregation is called to be an agent of reconciliation in a world filled with division and violence. For Christians, the ministry of peace begins and ends with Christ the shepherd, Who gathers the scattered children of the world. He is the source of our life together and the center of the church’s mission. To those who seek nourishment for daily life, we point to Christ Who guides and feeds us in our journey. WELCOME AND MEDITATION
GATHERING HYMN (Please rise.) “All People That on Earth Do Dwell” (Maj # 9) INVOCATION ( = All may make the sign of the cross.) P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: AMEN. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Almighty God, to Whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from Whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may per- fectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: AMEN. 2
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God Who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteous- ness. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (Please kneel. Silence is kept for reflection and personal confession.) P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. AMEN. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: AMEN. GREETING (Please rise.) P: The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. WE PRAISE GOD’S NAME With one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. “Let all the peoples praise him.” (Romans 15:6,11) HYMN OF PRAISE “This Is the Feast” 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Let us pray together: C: O God, powerful and compas- sionate, You shepherd Your people, faithfully feeding and protecting us. Heal each of us, and make us a whole people, that we may embody the justice and peace of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. AMEN. RESPONSIVE READING….Psalm 89:2037 (congregation reads indented) I have found David my servant; with My sacred oil I have anointed him. My hand will sustain him; surely My arm will strengthen him. No enemy will subject him to tribute; no wicked man will oppress him. I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. My faithful love will be with him, and through My name his horn will be exalted. 5
I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. He will call out to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.’ I will also appoint him My firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. I will maintain My love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure. “If his sons forsake My law and do not follow My statutes, if they violate my decrees and fail to keep My commands, I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take My love from him, nor will I ever betray My faithfulness. I will not violate My covenant or alter what My lips have uttered. Once for all, I have sworn by My holiness— and I will not lie to David— that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before Me like the sun; it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” 6

SMALL CATECHISM READING L: Let us confess our faith by reading a portion of Luther’s Small Catechism, Part III. The Lord’s Prayer: L: What is The Fourth Petition? C: “Give us this day our daily bread;” (Matthew 6:11) L: What does this mean? C: Truly, God gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to evil people, but we pray in this request that He will help us to recognize what our daily bread is and to receive it with thanksgiving. L: What does “daily bread” mean? C: Everything that nourishes our body and meets its needs, such as: Food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, yard, fields, cattle, money, possessions, a devout spouse, devout children, devout employees, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, discipline, honor, good friends, faithful neighbors and other things like these. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (Please kneel.) WE RECEIVE THE COVENANT MEAL For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26) THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Please rise.) P: The LORD be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the LORD. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to You, O Lord, Holy Father, through Christ our Lord; Who on this day over- 10
came death and the grave, and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise Your name and join their unending hymn: (W OV p 22) PRAYER AND WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. In great love You sent to us Jesus, Your Son, Who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, Who preached good news to the poor, and Who, on the cross, opened His arms to all. In the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is My body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. Again, after supper, He took the cup; gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: this cup is the new covenant in My blood, shed for you and for all people for the for- giveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of Me. 11
Remembering, therefore, His death, resurrection, and ascension, we await His coming in glory. Pour out Your Holy Spirit, that by this Holy Communion we may know the unity we share with all Your people in the body of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung) (please be seated after “Amen”) Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not in- to temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the king- dom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN. INVITATION TO COMMUNION All who are baptized and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior may partake.
