WORSHIP AT KING OF KINGS DURING A PANDEMIC Updated October 12, 2021 In response to the CDC’s most recent recommendations for controlling the COVID-19 global pandemic, King of Kings has made updated our worship practice as follows: All of the liturgies, songs, lessons, and such will be included in slides on the screen. There are larger print bulletins at the back of the Worship Center for those with visual impairments. If not vaccinated, please consider wearing a mask while in the building. HONORING GOD WITH OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS King of Kings believes firmly in the biblical principle of honoring God through our tithes and offerings. We consider giving to be an act of worship that both expresses and exercises our love and trust in the Lord as the source of all He has entrusted to us. If you are our guest today please know you are under no obligation to give. The mission and ministry of this church is supported by those who have committed themselves to this community of faith. If you do desire to give we ask only that you do so with a joyful heart. King of Kings offers a variety of ways to give: An offering basket is located at the rear of sanctuary/worship center where you can place your gift. You can give through our website www.koklcms.org. Look for the donation tab in the upper right hand corner of the home page. You can set up contributions on a recurring basis or as a one-time offering. You can also manage your giving by downloading the Give+ app from your favorite app store.
Entrance Music “Come See” by Michael W. Smith “Come Back Home” by Kutless Greeting Opening Hymn “Lord of All Hopefulness” Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy: Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe: Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace: Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm: Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. Words by Jan Struther, old Irish melody © Oxford University Press. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License .NET, no. 100011873. Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Opening Sentences Psalm 92:1–4; 93:5 P It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; C to declare Your steadfast love in the morning, and Your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. P For You, O LORD, have made me glad by Your work; C at the works of Your hands I sing for joy. P Your decrees are very trustworthy; C holiness befits Your house, O LORD, forevermore. Page 2
Confession and Absolution P It is good and right that we should make confession of our sins. The section on “Confession” in the Small Catechism informs and directs us with these words, which summarizes it well. C Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven. P Humble yourselves then before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness. C O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your present and eternal punishment. By nature, I am a sinful creature. By thought, word, and deed, I have continually transgressed Your law. For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite being. Forgive me all my sins, and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life. P God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith. C Amen. P As you believe, so let it be. As a called and ordained servant Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Song of Praise “Fill My Heart” Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord; I am weak and I need Your grace. You are the only light, You are the Way of life. Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord. Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord; I am Yours, I will give You praise. You are the only Truth, and I will follow You. Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord. Fill my spirit with Your spirit until I cannot contain it. Fill my heart with love that cannot be explained. Fill another earthen vessel until grace is overflowing And this barren earth Is covered by Your rain…(to page 4) Page 3
Song of Praise (continued) “Fill My Heart” Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord. Speak Your Word and I will obey So open eyes can see all You are in me. Fill my heart, fill this house, fill this day O Lord. C And also with you. P Let us pray together. C O God, Your divine wisdom sets in order all things in heaven and on earth. Put away from us all things hurtful and give us those things that are beneficial for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. T Service of the Word T Old Testament Lesson Deuteronomy 10:12–21 12 “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good? 14Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. 15Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. 16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn. 17For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. 18He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. 19Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 20You shall fear the LORD your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. 21He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen.” R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Page 4
Epistle Lesson Romans 12:9–21 9 10 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. 17Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Preparation to Hear the Gospel “And Now My Lifesong Sings” Scott Krawec, soloist The Holy Gospel Luke 15:1–7 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So he told them this parable: 4“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Children's Message Page 5
Sermon Song “If We are the Body” It’s crowded in worship today, and she slips in, trying to fade into the faces. The girls’ teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know, Farther than they know. But if we are the Body, why aren’t His arms reaching, Why aren’t His hands healing, why aren’t His words teaching? And if we are the Body, why aren’t His feet going, Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way. A traveler is far away from home; he sheds his coat And quietly sinks into the back row. The weight of their judgmental glances Tells him that his chances are better out on the road. But if we are the Body, why aren’t His arms reaching, Why aren’t His hands healing, why aren’t His words teaching? And if we are the Body, why aren’t His feet going, Why is His love not showing them there is a way? Jesus paid much too high a price for us to pick and choose who should come, And we are the Body of Christ. If we are the Body, why aren’t His arms reaching, Why aren’t His hands healing, why aren’t His words teaching? And if we are the Body, why aren’t His feet going, Why is His love not showing them there is a way? And if we are the Body, why aren’t His arms reaching, Why aren’t His hands healing, why aren’t His words teaching? And if we are the Body, why aren’t His feet going, Why is His love not showing them there is a way? Jesus is the Way. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. (to page 7) Page 6
