After a short coastal hike to stretch our legs, it’s over the hill to Picton—the gateway to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds—where we will make our way via private water taxi out to our secluded luxury lodge for the next two nights, the Bay of Many Coves. Relaxation awaits with nothing but birdsong and the odd boat engine marring the serenity. The following morning after a hearty breakfast, we’ll board our water taxi with our local guide and head to the start of the incredible Queen Charlotte Track—one of New Zealand’s most celebrated coastal walks. The entire walk is 70 km (44 mi.), however, we’ll be walking the first section from Ship Cove (where Captain Cook first set up camp in 1770!) to Furneaux Lodge for a guided hike of about 12 km (8 mi.), with other options available if desired.We’ll dine on a lovely picnic lunch en route, and enjoy a cold drink at the finish line to reward our efforts. New Zealand Walking 2019 The Journey 3 _____________ Days 3 & 4 The Kaikoura Coastline The native New Zealand birds will serve as our ‘alarm clock du jour’ before another blissful breakfast on the deck. Once we’re fed, we’ll check out and meet our private water taxi for the short trip back to Picton. Arriving on the other side, we’ll meet with our local guides for the rest of the journey. They’ll bring us on an incredible hike on the Tirohanga Track affording some lovely views out over Picton— and well-worth the inclines! Heading south on the beautiful 2-hour drive from Blenheim to Kaikoura, we’ll make some scenic stops along the way (including a stop for lunch) where we may just spot some New Zealand fur seals basking on the rocks. The Kaikoura coastline has changed dramatically since 2016 when a large earthquake hit and raised the seabed by 1.5 m (5 ft.) in parts. We’ll explore both by foot and boat, keeping on the lookout for the whales and dolphins that call the area home. This evening will be a relaxing one with dinner at the lodge.
