Ms. Shannon Knoepke: Appointed to the Rochester Catholic Schools Board of Trustees for a three-year term, effective July 1, 2019. Office of Life, Marriage and Family, and Faith Formation: Natural Family Planning Awareness Week: The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week are July 21-27, and highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love, and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Ss. Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. For ways to promote NFP Awareness Week in your parish, please visit the USCCB’s website. Married Couples Retreat: The sixth annual Married Couples Retreat will be held at Shalom Hill Farm in Windom on the weekend of October 4-6. Please offer this retreat to the couples in your parish by posting the attached poster. Retrovaille: Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi), a French word meaning “Rediscovery,” is a program for couples with marital problems that want marriage help. Those who are considering separation and those who are already separated or divorced are encouraged to consider the Retrouvaille Program. There is always hope of reviving your relationship. The Retrouvaille weekend experience will take place in Rochester on October 11-13! More information can be found here. Women’s Conference: The Women’s Conference will be Saturday, November 2, at St. Augustine Parish, Austin. Please include the attached graphic in your bulletins. Thank you! March for Life: The Diocese of Winona-Rochester is arranging a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., for the National March for Life January 22-26. Registration is available on the Youth and Young Adult website. Space will be limited, so we are 2
encouraging groups to form quickly. A flyer for the pilgrimage is included in the attachments. Thank you and we hope to see some of your young people with us in Washington, D.C.! Clean Heart Online: A new anti-pornography resource is now available for the Diocese of Winona-Rochester: Clean Heart Online (https://cleanheart.online/diocese-winona-rochester). On the website you will find resources available for strugglers, parents, educators, and ministry leaders. These resources vary from short articles to full courses taught by well-known Catholic educators. This is a free benefit to us from Covenant Eyes as a Safe Haven Sunday participating Diocese. Please add a link of this page to your website and advertise it in your bulletins. An advertisement is attached. Office of Missionary Discipleship, Lay Formation and RCIA: Pentecost Celebration: Thank you! ... to all who gathered for our diocesan Pentecost Celebration and Pentecost Vigil Mass. And, a special word of appreciation to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for hosting our event with such generosity and spirit of hospitality. There will be coverage of the celebration in the July issue of The Courier, and a video of the Millennial Church Conference (held on Friday, June 7) is available for viewing at our diocesan web site. Alpha in a Catholic Context Training: If you are interested in running Alpha as a community builder and outreach, based on a hospitable offering of the basic gospel message, the diocese is hosting a one-day training by the regional director of Alpha USA at Pax Christi Parish in Rochester, August 24, from 9 am to 3 pm. This training is appropriate for people who are considering offering Alpha, those who plan to and need to check their internal training, and those who have been doing it a while and want to ask about details and best practices! Continental breakfast and lunch are included, and the cost per person is $40 ($30 a person if registering as part of a three person or more parish-based group). This training is appropriate for organizational leaders, table facilitators, publicity volunteers, and hospitality crews. Flyer is attached. Please register here. Unbound Conference: The Unbound: Freedom in Christ conference with Neal Lozano, has been rescheduled for September 27-28, at St. John Vianney Parish in Fairmont. Early bird registration for the conference ($50) is available starting July 1, and lasts through the month of July. Please see the attached poster for more information, and post widely. Discipleship Quads: If any parish, school, lay ecclesial community, or individual would like to deepen their faith life with others, the Office of Missionary Discipleship will be supporting a spiritual multiplication small group outreach called Discipleship Quads starting this fall. It is possible that we may be able to get the creators of this outreach to present in the diocese. If you are interested in learning more about this, please contact Susan Windley-Daoust (swindley@dowr.org). ChristLife: If your parish is interested in learning about or offering ChristLife, please let Susan Windley-Daoust know. She is assessing whether there is enough interest to run a local training in the specific model and its process. 3
Office of Vicar for Clergy: Theology of the Body Course: The Theology of the Body Institute in Aston, PA, is partnering with the Diocese of Cleveland, to put on a 5-day, 30-hour, Theology of the Body course, from September 8-13, 2019, at The Lodge at Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, Ohio. This course is a "Head and Heart Immersion" and will be taught by Christopher West, world renowned speaker and best-selling author. A flyer is included in the attachments of this update, and there is also a registration link and video testimonial. Clergy Study Day: The Institute for Ongoing Clergy Formation, which is part of the Seminaries of St. Paul, extends an invitation to the clergy of our diocese to participate in a clergy study day on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, from 10 am – 3 pm, at St. Peter's Parish in Mendota Heights, MN. The speaker for this study day is Fr. Wojciech Giertych, OP, the theologian of the Pontifical Household. He will be presenting two conferences that day. There is a flyer in the attachments which includes the registration information and other details for this day. Catholic Foundation of Southern Minnesota: Stewardship Conference: The International Catholic Stewardship Conference (ICSC) Annual Meeting will be held October 6-9, 2019, in Chicago, IL. If you are interested in attending the ICSC Conference or applying for a Seeds of Faith – Faith Formation grant (up to $750) to assist with expenses to attend, please contact Monica Herman. Death Notices: Sr. Casilda Chavez, OSF, 97, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died June 17. Margaret Mary Chavez was born Feb. 22, 1922, in San Pablo, CO, to Policarpio & Mary (Lucero) Chavez. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1942, made first vows in 1945, & perpetual vows in 1948. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the College of St. Teresa, Winona. From 1945 to 1983, Sr. Casilda served as an elementary education teacher at various Catholic schools in MN, including St. Columba, Iona; St. Gabriel, Fulda; St. Peter, Rose Creek; Cathedral School, Winona; & St. John School & St. Francis School, Rochester. In 1983 she moved to Assisi Heights where she served as Office Assistant, Mail Clerk, & Librarian. Sr. Baptiste Fish, OSF, 91, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died May 30. Shirley Elaine Fish was born Jan. 25, 1928, in Minneapolis, to George & Flora (White) Fish. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1957, made first vows in 1959, & perpetual vows in 1962. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, & a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Sr. Baptiste taught at Pacelli High School, Austin, & then spent the remainder of her ministry in accounting. She served as Assistant Treasurer for the Sisters of St. Francis, Rochester; Director of Student Work & Loans & Vice President for Financial Affairs at the College of St. Teresa, Winona; & accountant & business manager in AZ and CA. Sr. Lorna Helter, OSF, 102, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died May 4. Mary Elizabeth Helter was born Dec. 8, 1916, near Bergen, MN, to John & Mary (Devlin) Helter. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1935, made first vows in 1938, & perpetual vows in 1941. She received both a Bachelor & Master of Fine Arts degrees. Sr. Lorna taught at St. Mary School, Ellsworth, where she also was the organist for the high school choir. She later taught at St. John’s School & Lourdes High School, Rochester; & St. Thomas High School & Cotter High School, Winona. Following retirement from teaching, Sr. Lorna was sales advisor at Cathedral Book Shop in Columbus, OH, until she returned to Assisi Heights in 2006. 4
Sr. Michon Welsh, OSF, 87, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died May 23. Mary Ellen Welsh was born May 25, 1931, in St. Louis, MO, to Leo & Monica (Veranis) Welsh. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1949, made first vows in 1952, & perpetual vows in 1955. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, & a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education Administration from Winona State University. Sr. Michon taught in Owatonna, Winona, Easton, & Rollingstone, & was principal at St. Francis School, Rochester. She also served as Director of Schools for the Diocese of New Ulm, & Admissions Counselor at the College of St. Teresa, Winona. Sr. Michon later served at several parishes in the Twin Cities. Sr. Marjorie (Mary Benjamin) Myers, SSND, 90, professed in 1951, died June 9, in Notre Dame Health Care, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Mankato. A native of Lisle, IL, she graduated from St. Margaret’s Academy, Minneapolis, in 1947. She entered the SSND Candidature in 1948 & professed first vows in 1951. She taught elementary & secondary grades in MN and ND until 1980, & often was responsible for church music & choirs. In the Winona-Rochester Diocese, she taught at Sacred Heart, Heron Lake; St. Anthony, Lismore; & Good Counsel Academy, Mankato. Beginning in 1981, she filled a variety of roles for the School Sisters of Notre Dame, including college teacher, resource person, researcher, archivist, liturgist & organist, communications director, & writer.
