Inventing The New Normal at UUFBR With Water Communion on September 12, UUFBR moves to a hybrid platform, both in person and on Zoom! From now on, geography, no car, a sleepy child or a sprained ankle can no longer leave anyone out. The technology can help us expand and strengthen our community. This hybrid life is an experiment. No one has done it before — And no one knows how best to do it. We will invent it as we go. The first step is to brainstorm together. How can this technology be used to deepen our individual spiritual journeys? How can it strengthen the connections between us? How can we encourage more participation in our programs? How can we use it to invite newcomers into UUFBR? To start our collaboration on inventing this new normal at UUFBR I ask you to take this survey. Step 2 will be Zoom conversations scheduled later this summer. SURVEY LINK: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BP8TQXP - Rev. Harris The submission deadline for the September 2021 Unicorn Newsletter is 12 noon on Friday, August 27. July/August 2021 3
UUFBR BOARD OF TRUSTEES CORNER By now you have heard about the myriad of challenges we are currently facing. Your Board has held several congregational town hall gatherings during which we described these challenges and tried to answer your insightful questions. You have asked for more information so you can feel ready to decide whether we will stay at our present location and meet the financial obligations this will entail or whether we sell our property and seek to rent or buy new space. To provide your requested information, your Board has obtained inspections of our property and estimates of the cost to make needed repairs and replacements and establish reserves for future maintenance. We have also formed committees to meet with brokers to discuss a potential sale of our property and our options concerning renting or buying a new location. People have also reached out to entities that might have facilities we could lease. We have put the results of all of these investigations into a “White Paper” which is contained in this Unicorn via a link. (See next page). We ask you to review the White Paper carefully and then come to our next Congregational Town Hall on July 11 to discuss it. This is a long and sometimes trying process but you will need to decide our future place of worship and gathering, be it somewhere new or at the home we love. You deserve both the time and information in order to make this decision. We will stay in close touch as we move forward together. Your Co-Presidents wish to give special thanks to Patricia Rogers, Paul Libert, Patrick Larson, Donna Musial, Ron Lovell, John and Betty Tilton, Jennifer Ligeti, Johnnie Rogers and Louis Merlin for their invaluable work in gathering and presenting the information you have requested. We all owe them a great deal of thanks. White Paper Town Hall Meeting July 11 Immediately After Service Discussion of the White Paper details on (1) needed replacements and repairs on our buildings and grounds, (2) when we likely need to make them, and (3) estimated costs. Also, other options for the future — a summary of the information we received from four real estate agents and the pros and cons of each of the options. Click here for the White Paper document. UUA Virtual General Assembly 2021 So, you may have heard about General Assembly but don’t know much about it. General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists, where we conduct business of the Association, explore the theological underpinnings of our faith, and lean fully into our mission and principles. Participant’s worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. This year GA had more than 4,000 registered attendees participate from remote locations around the world. We here at UUFBR had 4 members participate, Carolyn Brown, Louise Malusis, Ron Roth and Lynn Smith. We had the opportunity to worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. Circle 'Round for Justice ● Healing ● Courage was the theme for General Assembly 2021. The spirit of GA continues as we circle ‘round in community. We circle ‘round in care and healing; for liberation and justice; and for love and courage. What happened this year? Some bylaws were amended, Elections were held for new Trustees and Officer Positions and more importantly the General Assembly affirmed 3 Actions of Immediate Witness and adopted a Statement of Conscience. (SOC) Undoing Intersectional White Supremacy (PDF) (click the links to learn more.) • Defend and Advocate with Transgender, Nonbinary, and Intersex Communities • The COVID-19 Pandemic: Justice. Healing. Courage • Stop Voter Suppression and Partner for Voting Rights and a Multiracial Democracy Next Year GA will be held in Portland, Oregon but there will also be an opportunity to attend virtually. It’s a great opportunity to witness our faith, become inspired and learn about what other congregations are doing. We’ll give you more information about next year’s GA in the Spring. Come and join in this great experience. July/August 2021 5

Join HJ to further understand how racism fuels hatred and how we can continue our journey to reverse these trends. The UUFBR Healing Justice Group grew out of a 2013 group discussion of Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Several who took that class were motivated to learn more and to turn study into action. In 2016, in conjunction with The Center for the Healing of Racism, HJ presented Dialogue: Racism, a 2-day community workshop that provided a safe, respectful and loving atmosphere for individuals to learn new information, share their experiences, get different perspectives, and ask questions to dispel fears, get to know each other and stop separation. 2016 Dialogue: Racism HJ Summer Zoom Meetings Thursday, July 15 at 7:00pm Thursday, August 19 at 7:00pm Zoom links provided in the weekly emails HJ Sunday Service on August 8 A Tribute to Coretta Scott King HJ on Social Media Healing Justice Forum on Facebook July/August 2021 7

Open Door Acupuncture, Community Acupuncture Clinic Rockberger Room (back building) Erica Siegel, A.P. Acupuncture Physician and Doctor of Oriental Medicine Clinic Hours Sunday: 8:30am-10:30am and 12:00pm-3:00pm Monday: 10:00am-2:00pm Wednesday: 9:00am-2:00pm and 5:00pm-8:00pm Thursday: 8:00am-2:00pm Saturday: 9:00am-3:00pm I’m still here for you! Community Acupuncture (treatments in a group setting) has become popular in the United States over the last few years because patients pay on a sliding scale, therefore allowing the opportunity to receive treatments as often as needed. Unfortunately, during this time of Covid-19, the community acupuncture model is not an optimal situation for receiving treatments. The information that we have thus far about this virus has encouraged us to physically distance as much as possible. In keeping with these guidelines, I am seeing patients privately until the virus numbers become much lower. An exception to this rule would apply if a family or group of people who have been isolating together visit me at the same time for treatments. In keeping with necessary guidelines, practitioner and patient both must wear clean masks. The clinic is aired out and disinfected between patients with medical grade products. I also keep the door open as much as possible to keep the air circulating. Even though I am seeing patients privately, I am keeping my fee lower than a usual private treatment fee. I feel that it is imperative at this time for us to all keep working on our overall health, boosting our immune systems and reducing stress. My fee right now for an initial consultation including an acupuncture treatment is $75. Acupuncture treatments are $50. If two people who have been isolating together come for treatment at the same time, the cost is $75 for both patients. I am also available to discuss herbal options for those who are interested in boosting their immunity. Please remain healthy, mentally and physically. It is a very challenging time, but we each have much to be grateful for. Much love, Erica 718-541-4931 ericasiegel_acupuncture@yahoo.com July/August 2021 9
