Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 The 1679’er News June 2020 Exalted Ruler: Chris Setzer 910 Carthage Street • Sanford, North Carolina 27330 • www.sanfordelks1679.org Phone (919) 776-3660 • Email er@sanfordelks1679.org April, 2019 Dear Elks Families: As you can see throughout this newsletter, we are back. Well, sort of. We were able to open both, the pool and club room, but with that we have restrictions. We ask all mem- bers to help by staying within the guidelines so we can get through this difficult time. I am proud to announce that during these difficult times, our lodge was able to contribute one more time to our community in May. With the assistance of the North Carolina Elks Charitable Trust we were able to donate $1,000 to Family Promise to help with local homeless families. We do have a slight change in our plans. Our original plan was to have an Anniversary Cookout and a 4th of July Cookout. However, due to the current restrictions, we have made the decision to change it up. Be assured everyone, the horizon is bright. We are planning a major cookout and party called “We're Back” party to be held as soon as we can fully open. This will include both the pool and club side for all members and families. Expect a pig pickin BBQ, drink specials, drawings, and entertainment. It is my hope this will be huge and will make up for what we have had to go without. While there is no way to come up with a date, hopefully Please see ER, Page 4 Lodge Officers Committees Exalted Ruler………………...…...Chris Setzer PER President…….………………..Joe Clancy Leading Knight………….…..Addison Johnson Elks National Foundation…..…Steve Johnson Loyal Knight…………..............…...Alex Voytik Americanism………………....Chanda Coomer Lecturing Knight……………..Chanda Coomer National Veterans Service….….…Lee Littiken Secretary……….....Steve Johnson, PDDGER Auditing/Accounting…….……….Mike Gonella Treasurer…………..……..Mike McGraw, PER Drug Awareness…………....Randall Mattingly Chaplain…………..………....Randall Mattingly Public Relations……………Gordon Anderson Inner Guard……………..……....Eric Davidson Risk Management……….………..Brent Smith Esquire………………………………...Chris Gill Youth Activities……………Addison Johnson Tiler………………….……..Rodney Cummings Membership……………….………..Scott Pace 1-Year Trustee…………..Joe Clancy, DDGER 2-Year Trustee…..…….….....Scott Pace, PSP Club Manager…………….……….Tim Sinnott 3-Year Trustee…..…..Nathan Cochrane, PER Pool Manager…………….……....Carolyn Lee

Page 4 Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 Newsletter ● June 2020 ER From Page 1 we can have it in late July or August as soon as the Governor has lifted all the restrictions. I would like to give a special shout-out here. Tim Sinnott and Melissa Graham who have become our Covid-19 King and Queen, have worked very hard to offer as much as possible during the shutdown with takeout food. Even now, they come up with new ideas to overcome issues as they arise. One issue is that beef prices have tripled, so they are both working on creative menus for the next month or two to keep us from raising prices and keeping your Elks membership value added. Rest assure we are doing all we can. All in all I am thankful for everyone’s help and support through this all. Our lodge has proved, once again, that together we can overcome anything. I look forward to what we can accomplish next. Page 5 Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 Newsletter ● June 2020 Tip of the Antlers! A great big “hoof clappin” Tip of the Antlers to: Chris Gill, Nathan Cochrane, Steve Johnson, Rodney Cummings, Tim Sinnott, Chanda Coomer, Alex Voytik, Tim Childress, Joe Clancy, Gene Connor, Glen Gunter, Carolyn Lee and her pool staff for getting the pool cleaned up and ready for the summer fun! Tim Sinnott and Melissa Graham for preparing dinners during the Covid-19 closing, and Thanks to the members that supported the Lodge during the Closure by purchasing take out dinners. Melissa Graham for making a face mask to fit our Elk and as a neighborly gesture made one for us to present to the Moose Lodge for their Moose. Glen Gunter for adjusting the gates going into the pool. This is what makes our Lodge successful!!! It takes lots and lots of volunteers. Thanks again to everyone that takes time out of their busy schedule to help our Lodge continue to demonstrate “Elks Care-Elks Share”. History Report (From Mike McGraw, Lodge Historian) History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children. …… Nelson Mandela Unfortunately, I am sorry to say with everything that has been going on, time got away and there is no anniversary letter this month. That’s because in the past month we have been creating history. Nowhere in any of our minute books or records could we find a time that shows experience on what we have lived through these past 2 months. Here are a few things to look forward to: In July we will talk about the history of our pool with a very interesting twist. In August we will introduce those from our Lodge who went on to higher offices to include 3 members who became our state president. In September we will talk about 3 Elks from other lodges who were actually the spark plugs that got the Sanford Lodge going. In October we still hope we can have a full celebration marking the 75th anniversary of our institution Rest assured, the Anniversary committee is back to the planning board and working on finishing out this year in celebration.
