Epiphany Call to Worship Dr. Bailey and Huda Kandalaft

One: This past year with the pandemic, we found ourselves on a
different road,
Many: yet we still look for that grown-up Baby born long ago in
Bethlehem.
One: This past year we have been worshiping in different ways,
Many: yet we still treasure the holy One of Christmas
who gives gifts of food and life to the needy, and who sets free
the oppressed and burdened.
One: Through zoom and virtual means, we are still gathering,
Many: yet together we still long for the presence of Christ,
and each other, even as we remain apart from one another.
One: So let us come now and worship God in spirit and in truth.
Opening Prayer (together) Dr. Bailey
Radiant God, light for all people and all places,
By the guidance of a star you led the Magi
To worship the Christ
By the light of faith
Lead us to worship you in peace and joy
And guide us in your way
We pray in the name of Christ, Light of the world. Amen
Opening Hymn: “Arise Your Light is Come” VU#79
                             Arise, your light is come!
                              The Spirit's call obey;
show forth the glory of your God,
                            which shines on you today.

                             Arise, your light is come!
                            Fling wide the prison door;
                           proclaim the captive's liberty,
                             good tidings to the poor.

                            Arise, your light is come!
                              All you in sorrow born,
                         bind up the broken-hearted ones
                          and comfort those who mourn.

                           Arise, your light is come!
                         The mountains burst in song!
                        Rise up like eagles on the wing;
God's power will make us strong.

Call to Reconciliation Huda Kandalaft

With humility and courage, let us confess some of the ways in which
our choices and foolishness have not honoured the God we love and
serve. For this is the same God who possesses a heart full of
forgiveness.

Confessing Together in Prayer Huda Kandalaft
Merciful God, we confess that we at times have chosen to take
the wrong path. It was not a mistake. Sometimes we don’t
know why, but other times we know full well what we are
doing. You have provided the light for the way we should go,
but too often we choose the shadowed streets of rebellion. Deep
down, you know we do not want to be like this. We long for you
to turn us around again. Be pleased to forgive us and lead us to
the paths of righteousness; the paths of faith, love, hope,
justice, grace and forgiveness. May we be like those wise ones
in the Christmas story, who because of you, found joy, grace,
and salvation. We are grateful for your patience and your
commitment to us and this world you so love. Amen.

Hymn: We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are
                         bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
                             Following yonder star.

Chorus: O star of wonder, star of night,
                         Star with royal beauty bright,
                      Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
                            King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign. (Chorus)

                          Frankincense to offer have I
                          Incense owns a Deity nigh.
Prayer and praising all men raising,
Worship Him, God on high. (Chorus)

Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom.
                      Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. (Chorus)

                           Glorious now behold Him arise,
                            King and God and Sacrifice.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Sounds through the earth and skies. (Chorus)

One: May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,

Many: May he defend the afflicted among the people and save

*Hymn “Will You Come and See the Light” VU #96
Will you come and see the light from the stable door?
It is shining newly bright, though it shone before.
It will be your guiding star,
                           it will show you who you are;
will you hide, or decide to meet the light?
Will you step into the light that can free the slave?
It will stand for what is right, it will heal and save.
                               By the pyramids of greed
                             there's a longing to be freed;
will you hide, or decide to meet the light?

Will you tell about the light in the prison cell?
Though it's shackled out of sight, it is shining well.
When the truth is cut and bruised,
                              and the innocent abused,
will you hide, or decide to meet the light?

Will you join the hope, alight in the young girl's eyes,
of the mighty put to flight by a baby's cries?
When the lowest and the least
are the foremost at the feast,
will you hide, or decide to meet the light?

Will you travel by the light of the babe new born?
In the candle lit at night there's a gleam of dawn,
                             and the darkness all about
is too dim to put it out:
will you hide, or decide to meet the light?

*Dedication of Tithes and Offerings Huda Kandalaft
God of gold, in our worship we seek your glory; today we present our tithes and
offerings asking that these riches may become instruments of your wonder and joy
in the lives of many. God of myrrh, receive our offering as a fragrant perfume to
you; may this, with your blessing, be a medicinal balm to heal the afflictions and
sorrows of many and may your presence become the oil of anointing for our
community and the world. In our wealth, in our yearning, in our seeking we
worship you, God-with-us. Amen.

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer Huda Kandalaft

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
   who trespass against us;
   and let us not fall into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
   forever and ever. Amen

*Hymn “I Am the Light of the World” VU #87
'I am the light of the world!
You people come and follow me!'
If you follow and love you'll learn the mystery
of what you were meant to do and be.

1 When the song of the angels is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and the shepherds have found
                              their way home,
the work of Christmas is begun: R

2 To find the lost and lonely one,
to heal the broken soul with love,
to feed the hungry children with warmth
                                  and good food,
to feel the earth below, the sky above! R
3 To free the prisoner from all chains,
                             to make the powerful care,
to rebuild the nations with strength of good will,
to see God's children everywhere! R

4 To bring hope to every task you do,
to dance at a baby's new birth,
to make music in an old person's heart,
and sing to the colours of the earth! R

Continuing in Prayer and Support:
In these times, as in all times, we are trusting God to grant us
wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of
Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us
not to ‘be afraid’. Normally, this exhortation is accompanied by
God’s promise to be with us. God being with us inspires and
empowers us to be ‘with’ each other. We do this by praying for one
another and reaching out by phone, facetime, Facebook, email,
WhatsApp… you name it. Let’s just stay connected. We send love
and wish everyone comfort and good health, and look forward to
hearing from you. May God bless us all.
