And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. L uke 18:27 Trading our Time for Trinkets Many years ago a youth pastor friend of mine took her group to the beach. On the way back home one of her youth was crying in a seat by himself. She asked him what was wrong and he said, “I never got to see the ocean.” All the free time he had on the retreat was spent in the arcade. Quarter after quarter he kept himself amused with games that offered him trinkets for his time. Game after game flowed on until it was time to go home. So, he left with a handful of plastic in place of the memories others were sharing of their time at the sea. This story has stuck with me for over thirty years. We don’t live our lives in decade chunks of time as much as we live in brief moments that are knit together. A lifetime is lived out in small portions created not by years and decades, but minutes and hours. Pocket change investments that add up to a life. John Piper puts it this way: The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. It is not the X-rated video, but the prime-time dribble of triviality we drink in every night. For all the ill that Satan can do, when God describes what keeps us from the banquet table of his love, it is a piece of land, a yoke of oxen, and a wife (Luke 14:18–20). The greatest adversary of love to God is not his enemies but his gifts. And the most deadly appetites are not for the poison of evil, but for the simple pleasures of earth. For when these replace an appetite for God himself, the idolatry is scarcely recognizable, and almost incurable. One of my life scriptures is I Corinthians 4:16-18: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. This verse grounds Piper’s quote with a biblical core. Even if they hang around in a landfill for years, the plastic trinkets that boy won in the arcade lost their glitter as soon as they were in his hand. As a New Year and decade unfold, certain questions rise to the top: “Am I trading my time for fleeting trinkets, or for lasting rewards?” “Am I more content with the gifts of the Father than I am with His grace that motivates me to serve Him?” Learning to deepen our focus and clarify how we spend our lives does not make us into stoic snobs. We don’t become sticks in the mud who cannot laugh or enjoy simple pleasures. In fact, if we find our greater focus on the kingdom of God and the things of heaven, we become more winsome and helpful to those we meet. The Holy Spirit makes us people of substance in a world filled with superficiality. This week I attended the funeral of a pastor friend’s son. He died suddenly at the age of 35. Sure it made me think. Doesn’t it you? If you think that one day you will be more committed to Christ and His church, think again. We are not promised tomorrow. So, I ask, how are you spending your quarters today? Randy

Six Little Stories (1) Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH. (2) When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That’s TRUST. (3) Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning. But still we set the alarms to wake up. That’s HOPE. (4) We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE. (5) We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children. That’s LOVE**. (6) On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence “I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That’s ATTITUDE. Have a Happy Day and live your life like the six stories.
