SEPTEMBER, 2021 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I know it is hard to believe, but summer is quickly winding down and the signs of fall are starting to appear. Our children are getting ready to go back to school, football season is about to start, pastries in the grocery stores are being made with pumpkin and as you can see by our Mainstream cover, Rally Day will take place on September 12th. This year beginning on September 19th David Auman will be leading the Sunday morning adult Sunday school class at 9:30 AM, I will start my Wednesday morning Bible class at 10 AM on September 15th and Matt Sweeney will have his Thursday men’s class at 6:30 PM beginning on September 16th. During that week, all three class will begin teaching the Westminster Shorter Catechism. It can be said that few things in the course of history have had such a shaping influence in the lives of Christians as the Westminster Shorter Catechism. The Catechism, consisting of a summary of Christian doctrines in 107 questions and answers, was written by the Westminster Assembly in London over 350 years ago. After being written, it was adopted immediately by the Church of Scotland and put into use. When Presbyterians came over the Atlantic Ocean to this country, the Catechism came as well. It has been one of the main documents of instruction within the Presbyterian denomina- tion ever since. It would be wonderful to see every individual and family read and discuss the Catechism. There are few things more suited to produce faithful men and women of God. In the flowing ebb and tide of new teaching tools and discipleship methods within today’s church, the best thing we can do is stand by the Shorter Catechism and trust that God will use it once again in this generation to apply His Word to the hearts of His own. My sincere prayer is that you can attend one of these weekly classes to grow in your faith and understanding which is based on the Word of God. Remember to bring your Bible as we seek to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. In Christ, Rev. Ronald Durika 3
Dear Parents and Guardians, The 2021-22 Sunday school year is about to begin. Regarding the start of the year, we would like to share some important information with our children, parents and teachers. Rally Day will be September 12, 2021. On this day, Rev. Durika will recognize the teachers during the worship service. Following the sermon, teachers will be “Commissioned” and then asked to take the children to the classrooms for introductions. There will be no Sunday Why I Like Retirement school on this day prior to service. ? Why don’t The regular Sunday school time/schedule (9:45 am) will resume retirees mind September 19, 2021. Lisa Orr, CEN Chair The JOY group, plus many other members from LPC, visited and toured our Pleasant Lane Farms Creamery on Saturday, August 7. We were a little nervous about hosting a tour for a group of 48 people but it proved to be a day of relaxation and enjoyment. The biggest surprise was when the chair of JOY, Nancy McKinnon, planned an impromptu celebration of our 50th wedding anniver- sary. Nancy has a keen memory and had jotted down the date during a random conversation in my office. The group sang “Happy Anniversary” and presented us with a vase of my favorite colored flowers, a beautiful afghan, made by Elaine Hudimac that complements our bedroom and a gift card to Rizzo’s. My LPC family consists of many loving and caring people none the least is the Caring Christians who’s card ministry has touched both Ralph and myself. Because of all of you my job here is a true blessing. With sincere hearts, we say thank you for coming and enjoying our farm and most of all thank you for a moving and memorable celebration of our 50 years of marriage. The Ralph and Ann Frye Family Editors Note: Go to the Pleasant Lane Farms web site to view the wide variety of cheeses that are available for sale. Individual tours may be scheduled but it is by reservation. Also, view the site for the tour fee schedule. 4
The Deacons hosted the Annual Picnic on August 22 at the Jamison Farm. There were approximately 50 people in attendance to socialize and enjoy an afternoon of great weather. We would like to thank the Jamisons for hosting the picnic, Dave and Nancy Auman who assisted with set up and acting as our Master Griller, thanks to Ava for help- ing with set up and providing activities for the children and to those who attended and provided the side dishes for the dinner. And as always a thank you to the Deacons for their dedication and commitment of serving and to the LPC members for supporting the church and its activities. Lots of good food and fellowship was had by all! Sincerely, The Deacons. 5
A cheerful what? Guideposts editor Mary Ann O’Roark recalls hearing the phrase “cheerful liver” so often in church as a girl that she asked her grandmother what a liver is. “It’s a part inside you, like your stomach or your heart,” Grandma replied. Rather confused, O’Roark tried to figure out how to be cheerful from the inside out. Then during Sunday school one week, a classmate explained that God loves a cheerful giver, not liver. Years later, however, O’Roark realized that her younger self wasn’t too far off the mark. After all, God does indeed love someone who lives cheerfully, spreading the hope and joy that he longs for all people to know! After all, it was Jesus who said, “I came that [all] may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10, NRSV). Red Skelton’s Comments on the Perfect Marriage 1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesday and I go on Fridays. 2. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops. 3. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off. 4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go on our anniversary. “Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!” she said. So I suggested the kitchen. 6
Audrey Penn’s book The Kissing Hand features a young raccoon who’s nervous about the first day of school. Mom consoles him by kissing his palm, signifying her presence with him. The youngster can simply put his hand to his face any time he needs a kiss from her. If that isn’t tear-jerking enough, as the raccoon scampers to school, he returns to kiss Mom’s hand so she’ll have a Kissing Hand too. That story reminds me of Matthew 28:20, when Jesus promises to be with us always, and of Psalm 23:4, which says, “I will fear no evil; for thou art with me” (KJV). God gives us a Kissing Hand through baptism, sealing us forever with the Holy Spirit and the mark of the cross of Christ. Just as the raccoons cherish their kissing hands, may we cherish the promise of our Father’s eternal presence. Thanks be to God, whose “goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6). Common House Ant Species Carpenter Ants Carpenter ants are large, ranging from 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch long. They are dark brown or black, but some species may have red or yellow coloring. When carpenter ants build their nests, usually in damp or decaying wood, they dig out tunnels, which weakens the wood from the inside. You’ll know you have these pests by the appearance of small holes in the surface of the wood and by the debris they produce from tunneling. Odorous House Ants Odorous house ants are only about 1/8 inch long and have beehive- shaped abdomens. They are dark brown or black. When threatened or crushed, odorous house ants give off a smell of rotten coconut, hence their name. While these ants do not pose a public health risk, they can contaminate food. Little Black Ants Little black ants are 1/16 inch long with two-segmented abdomens. They can be dark brown to black, but usually very dark black. These ants are shiny. While little black ants don’t pose a threat to our health, they can be a nuisance and contaminate food. 7
Michael and All Angels A newcomer approached the pastor after worship Many Christian denominations celebrate the festival of Michael and said, “I’d like and All Angels on September 29. While Gabriel is probably the you to pray for my best-known angel for announcing to Mary that she would bear hearing.” the Son of God, “the archangel Michael” is named in Jude 9; in Placing hands on Daniel 12:1 he is called “Michael, the great prince, the protector the man’s ears, the of [the] people”; and in Revelation 12:7 we read of “Michael and pastor said a very passionate, earnest his angels.” In each case, Michael is involved in a cosmic battle prayer and then revealed to someone in a vision as a message from God. asked the visitor, “How’s your hearing In fact, whenever angels appear in Scripture, the Hebrew word now?” is “messenger,” which in Greek is angelos — thus, the English With a confused “angel.” The Bible doesn’t say much about what angels looked look, the man said, like, but surely they weren’t the cute cherubs of modern pop art. “Well, it’s scheduled for tomorrow.” Given their most common greeting, “Do not be afraid,” it must have been startling to see one. Why celebrate Michael and All Angels? First, it reminds us there is more to God’s realm than we humans can see or comprehend. No matter the exact structure or appearance of angels, God sometimes uses them to communicate with us. Second, by Tuesday broadening our understanding we can serve as angels our- September 21 selves: messengers of God’s love and grace to the world.
