The Messenger United Methodist Church – 2210 Sixth Avenue East, Alexandria, MN 56308 Gary Taylor – email: pastorgary@alexumc.org Office email —office@alexumc.org May 2021 Ginger Mayer Hello Everyone, “Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love.” (2 John 3) Hermeneutic [hur-muh-noo-tiks, -nyoo-] – 1: plural in form but singular or plural in construction : the study of the methodological principles of interpretation (as of the Bible) 2: a method or principle of interpretation (Merriam- Webster.com) A big Greek sounding word that may make you think “It’s all Greek to me”! You would be right; it is Greek and it is a “Churchy Word”. A word used in theological discussions and in academic papers and books. This word, hermeneutic, is how we read and interpret the Bible. It is our attitudes, understandings, sometimes even biases, we use when we read the Bible. There was a time in America when good Christians read the Bible and understood it to accept and/or endorse slavery. Many other good Christians came to the opposite conclusion. There are still many denominations, the Southern Baptist Convention to name one, that reads the Bible as saying women cannot be clergy in churches. Others, like the United Methodist Church, have come to the opposite conclusion. The same is true on topics like ecology, especially global cli- mate change, divorce and remarriage, and LGBTQ inclusion. Our own personal hermeneutic can change over time, especially with the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. Mine did (a much longer discussion). When the passages we read don’t make sense, seem to be contrary to other passages in the Bible, or we encounter someone else with a different understanding, we begin to question what we thought was true. We can react in one of three ways: 1. Stand Firm; 2. Abandon Everything; or 3. Engage the Questions/Struggles. As we struggle with the ques- tions, our hermeneutic begins to change. We begin to see in a new light with new eyes. On Sunday, April 18th, in my sermon and then again in an email sent Wednesday, April 21, I mentioned the scriptures that give me meaning and that inform the way I read the Bible. They are: Isaiah 55:8-11 (My thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.) Micah 6:8 (Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with the Lord.) Hosea 6:6 (Steadfast love and knowledge of God.) 1 John 1:5 (God is light without darkness.) 1 John 4:7-12 (God is love and we should love.) Galatians 5:6b (Faith working through love.) Acts 10:34-36 (God shows no partiality; God doesn’t play favorites. Preaching peace by Jesus Christ.) Mark 12:29-31 (Love God; love neighbor.) John 13:34-35 (Love each other.) As you read these scriptures, can you see a pattern? Can this pattern inform me when I read other scriptures? So, how do you read and interpret the Bible? What is your hermeneutic? If yours is different than you friend’s, who is right? Can both be right? Does the way you read and interpret the Bible impact or influence the way you live in this world? May God’s Grace, Mercy and Peace be with you! – Pastor Gary.

Each year, churches in the Minnesota Annual Conference take a LOVE OFFERING for missions in conjunction with our Annual Conference Session. The theme of the 2021 Annual Conference—taking place June 22-24—is “Jesus. Waymaker.” The Love Offering provides the opportunity to experience the joy of doing way-making work with Jesus—feeding the hungry, reaching out to the migrant, and providing ongoing opportunities to touch lives with God’s compassion and grace. Bishop David Bard invites congregations to pray about and participate in the Love Offering as a generous expression of God’s wild and extravagant love. Funds from this year’s offering will to go to: The Methodist Border Friendship Commission (50 percent), host churches of Ruby’s Pantry (20 percent), the Matthew 25 food distribution (20 percent), and Volunteers in Mission scholarships (10 percent).
