Roar did not disappoint as over 100 kids came to learn about “When life is wild, GOD IS GOOD!” On top of that we had more than 60 adult and teen volunteers. I was blessed and humbled by all the support that made this week possible. THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in and helped in so many ways, it would not have been possible without you!! With school approaching and summer quickly coming to an end, I look back on the past few months and smile. It has been quite the whirlwind since coming here in April. God has done some amazing things here at Living the Word and I look for His goodness to continue the rest of the year. Blessings to all Rebekah
In Memorial Rev. Dr. Lowell Dean Crabtree 1936 – 2019 Pastor of Bethel UMC 1979 - 2001 This week, earth lost a unique man when Dean Crabtree left us, once again, but this time, however, to arrive on heaven’s distant shore, there to hear, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant …. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Yes, we grieve. Oh, how we grieve, but his travail is over. Safe now in the arms of Jesus. Thanks be to God. Of all the things I could say about him, of all the things he said while mentoring me in my own ministry, one statement has stood me well. “Jim, don’t depend on your talent. Depend on the power of the Holy Spirit.” That was fifteen years ago, and he is still right. So, in this brief memorial, we give thanks for clergy like Pastor Crabtree: Lives well lived. A life that made a real difference. Our church, our whole Bethel Ohio community, is blessed and better for having known him. Rest in peace, dearest of friends. Rest in peace. Rev. James Richter
Core Values Team Update The July Chimes explained and introduced the Core Values Team. This team has worked diligently, establishing the Core Values and Core Beliefs of Living the Word Church. The team met on July 6th, discussing how we could best adopt the Methodist Book of Discipline as a new church. After much thought and discussion, it was agreed that Living the Word will hold / implement the Book of Discipline in the same manner and function it was held to by Bethel United Methodist Church. The Core Values Team has embraced the task of reading the local church sections of the Book of Discipline, becoming familiar with them and their directives. It was decided that there must be a process to state an appeal or grievance. Going forward, those who wish to bring a concern regarding the Book of Discipline or Biblical Foundations must do the following: 1. Provide a written grievance or concern to the Executive Board Chair, which at this time is John Burke. 2. Provide Book of Discipline paragraph and biblical support regarding the concern in question. 3. The Executive Board Chair will submit concern to the Executive Leadership Team and Core Values Team. 4. A meeting of the Executive Board will be called. 5. The Person who has brought the concern forward for discussion is required to be in attendance and present their concern to the Executive Board. 6. The Executive Board will review the concern and make a final determination. This process was presented to the Executive Board and Staff Parish Relations Committee. It was voted on, and aproved, on July 23rd, 2019.
August is Back to School Safety Month With summer ending and the start of school just around the corner, drivers need to do their part to keep kids safe as they walk and bike to school. Whether you are taking your kids to school or just driving through a school zone, you can do your part to keep kids safe. August is designated as Back-to-School Safety Month, and we want to remind motorists to be extra careful at all times. Follow the tips below to make sure you keep your children safe while walking and biking to school: Back to School Safety Tips Here are some simple reminders for drivers: Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods and school zones Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving Reminders for your kids: Cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars Always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them
Living the Word “What does it profit, my brethren, if What good works has God prepared for you someone says he has faith but does not to do? When do you intend to do the good have works? Can faith save him?” works God has prepared for you to do? (James 2:14) “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17). You will see then that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone” (James 2:24). “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26). Trivia: Brothers “For by grace you have been saved Match the following brothers: through faith, and not that of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not works, lest anyone 1. Jacob (Gen 25: 25-26) should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus 2. Peter (Matt 10: 2) for good works, which God prepared 3. Moses (Ex 4:14) beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:8-10). 4. James (Matt 10: 2) “And whatever you do in word or deed, 5. Joseph (Gen 35: 24) do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, 6. Joses (Joseph) Matt 13: 55) giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Col 3:17). “And whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord, not to men, a. Judas knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for b. Esau you serve the Lord Christ” (Col 3:23-24). c. Aaron d. John e. Benjamin f. Andrew
FINANCE COMMITTEE This year is sure rushing by us. As you can see from the chart above, our giving has been good. Through the end of the first half of 2019, we are running just under $17,000 behind on our giving vs. budgeted need. Our “Current Fund” balance has remained strong and we give all the PRAISE to God for keeping us close to him. September brings with it the planning for 2020 at Living the Word. Those who chair a committee or are on staff will need to submit their budget requests to Allyson no later than Tuesday, September 10. If you could please offer up an extra prayer for the Finance Committee during this time that would be great. Budget time is always a little extra stressful and sometimes challenging. Please continue to seek God’s direction for you personally with regards to your financial support of Living the Word. As always, we appreciate your gifts and your tithes. God Bless! If you have questions or suggestions for the Finance Committee, please contact Debby Redden, Co-Chair (10:30 Service).
