Captain’s Message Members and Friends Sunday 9th August was the last day of a brilliant week of golf in the Club- Open Week 2020. Open Week has always been of great importance to County Sligo and this year, in 2020, record numbers of golfers played and this brought a great atmosphere back to the Club. The origin of Open Week dates back to 1906 when the idea of inviting visitors and friends to Rosses Point and play the course was devised. This tradition has continued and this year, the Club welcomed almost 1,900 entries- including 500 visitors. To extend our warm welcome to visitors and friends, our Captains, President, Vice Captains, Past Captains, committee members and members “togged” out in their green club jumpers and greeted golfers on the 1st tee. The work and commitment of our committees; members and staff is paramount to the success of Open Week particularly our competition secretaries, Pat Mc Daniel and Oonagh Mc Dermott who worked tirelessly during the week. Thanks to all. Well done to Mark Millar and his team for the excellent presentation and condition of the links which received many compliments throughout the week. Certainly, carrying sandbags, filling divots and repairing pitch marks throughout the year plays its part in keeping our Course in such condition and this is encouraged of members. Congratulations to all the winners and a word of acknowledgment to our Open Week sponsors - we appreciate and thank them for their support particularly in a year of such change for all businesses. All five men’s teams have played their first matches with the Junior Cup team; the Jimmy Bruen team and Senior Cup team though to the next round. The Junior Cup team play Castledargan this Saturday at 4 p.m. Best of luck guys-please come out to support. Congrats to the boys u16 team who came joint 4th in the Inter Club competition last week and best of luck to the boys u18 team who play in Boyle on 21st August. After a 5 month postponement - the final of Wehrly’s Winter League is on this Sunday 16th August. At last!. A special competition on the day has been included for new members. A reminder of the change in meal and presentation format. Many pairings will be vying for the Trophy presented in memory of the late Ken Cunningham. Golfers -don’t forget to keep an eye out for the golfer of the year competitions coming up- something to aim towards. Saturday 15th August is Lady Captain, Edel’s day and I wish herself, Dermot and the family the very best on her day. Have a fantastic day, Edel. Regards, John Mc Hugh Captain CSGC
Lady Captain’s Day Best wishes to Lady Captain Edel McDermott who hosts her Lady Captain’s Day this Saturday 15th August 2020

Links Report Both courses continue to play well despite the ongoing heavy traffic. Open week was the busiest to date and it was nice to hear the complementary comments about how the course was presented and playing. From the outset I want to sincerely thank the many members who took part in the divoting evening prior to open week. I am convinced that this great work contributed to the enjoyment of all. Some areas of rough were cut back to facilitate speed of play. This is not normally the time of year to cut back rough as it can have the effect of thickening the undergrowth which is not what is wanted. However the changing weather conditions this year accelerated growth in some areas. The normal rough management programme will resume in the early winter. Most areas that were damaged during the early year drought have now recovered. This was achieved with a combination of seeding and fertilising. We have a small amount of fairy-ring and in recent weeks an outbreak of mushroom growth in certain areas. Both of these intruders will disappear in the coming weeks. Divoting evening organised by Terry Brady, Links Chairman, before Open Week - great to see new members Ken & Gerry lending a hand
Links Report A number of target pins have been put on the putting and chipping greens with a foam insert in the cup to prevent the ball from dropping. Not perfect but an improvement I think. Our 3rd green is still struggling a bit but it is improving in terms of surface quality, maybe less so in appearance. Recently the less refined poa grass was dominating which left the surface looking poor. The poa has been sprayed in recent days and this will provide opportunity for the fescue grasses to take over. Overseeding and fertilising will speed up the process. This is in line with our agronomists recommendations. Pitch-marks on the greens continue to be a challenge and I ask everyone to repair at least 2 pitch-marks on every green. It only takes a few seconds and the resulting benefit is immeasurable. And don’t forget to take a divot bag. Enjoy your golf. Terry Brady. Links chairman.

Men’s Get into Golf 2020 This year’s Get into Golf started on June 17th We had 20 participants split into two groups due to Covid restrictions. A total of 8 Group lessons took place with David McQuillan. Every lesson featured a part of the golf game including putting, chipping, full swing, driver and bunker play. Everybody made great progress throughout the lessons and I am sure we have a lot of future competition winners in this group. The official golf lessons finished last week. A big “Thank You” to David and all participants for making it such an enjoyable experience. Most participants have joined the club as either Full Members or Bomore Members at this stage. We are going to continue to meet on Wednesday’s @18:30 in Bomore to bring the newly learned skills to the course. We welcome any member to join us to share their own golf experience with our novices. Sebastian Vogt (New Members)
Wehrly Bros. Winter League Final It is hard to believe that we are all preparing for the 2019/2020 final in the midst of sunshine and high temperatures! 2020 has been a very unusual year for us all but one of the beneficiaries has been golf. It has been great to see so many playing golf and certainly the Winter League for 2020/2021 will have many new faces. On the competitive side everybody is well prepared for this year’s final but the challenges are different than normal. We have the firm ground and the bounce to deal with as players not normal for a Winter League Final and lots of players have toned their game during our very successful Open Week. The normal form book is not relevant for this year’s final and the expectation is that it will be an outsider who will win. The favourites last March were Barrett/Togher, Whelan/Crawford, Rahilly/Quinn, Feeney/Hallissy but I do not believe that the winners will come from this group. The performance on big occasions should suit our sponsor and his partner Dermot Mc Dermott, Keyes/Mc Cormick, Sproule/Reynolds, Feeney/Barnicle , Gray/Flynn who all have a great pedigree and experience to pull it off. On the Day we will be serving you with Chicken fillet and Beef burgers when you come off the course which will enable you also to have a wee celebratory drink. The presentation will take place at 7pm and all prize winners should make a big effort to attend. Finally we would like to thank Tony & Richard Wehrly for their generous sponsorship. Their commitment to the sponsorship was unwavering despite the challenges business has faced this year. Tony& Richard have been generous in their sponsorship and great supporters of our Club and we sincerely thank them. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Good Luck and Enjoy Gerry McManus

Junior Boy’s Golf Report The junior golf is reaching the business end of the season. Junior open week commenced on Monday the 10th August with a series of four competitions on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. These include a stroke play, a v-par and stableford competitions and also a scotch foursomes event on the Thursday. This is for our 18-hole golfers of the white tees and is always a popular week. We always run this event immediately after our main open week which many of our 18-hole boys also participate in. This is also seeing a cluster of boys events taking place around the country which were delayed and postponed due to Covid-19. The Irish Boys took place earlier this week in Thurles and Sean McLoughlin put in an excellent performance making the cut after two days for the final round and Sean has a further two years at this age level so this was a great achievement. Tom Flanagan, Niall McDermott and Cormac Feeney also competed in this event. The Munster under 16s took place on Wednesday the 12th August and this was played in Roscrea Golf Club and three of our junior members took part. Jack Flanagan put in an excellent performance to finish on 5 over par, Aidan Brady was a further shot back and Luke Harrison shot 11 over par in this one day event. The Connacht close events are also taking place with our under 13s playing on the 12th August in Tuam Golf Club and the older boys taking part in Tuam Golf Club on the 13th August. The Connacht Close is often the highlight of the golfing calendar and in previous years there were qualifiers at regional level for this event, however, due to Covid-19 the younger of the 13 players only had a main final of the event this year. Our match play events continue to unfold with a series of excellent matches taking place in both the Godsell and the Blackwell match play competitions. These will be culminating in finals over the coming weeks. We set a date of Sunday the 6th September as the date for our junior boys and girls captains day in Bomore. This is always a popular day and we are sure our junior boys captain Niall McDermott will have an excellent day, there will also be a bar-b-que which will be managed in a Covid friendly way. Our summer Wednesday competitions have gone extremely well this year and our junior boys continue to use the Ireland Club thumb sign-in system and logging of scores which is proving very effective. The last of our Wednesday competitions take place next week. On behalf of the entire junior programme I would like to continue to extend my gratitude to the members of the club for their support and generosity with the timesheet management of the Bomore area during the busy summer months. This has helped us run a very effective and popular programme for our junior boys. Shane Flanagan Junior Convenor
