Year 5/6 The Arts (Dance) with Miss McGurk Year 5/6 students are currently permforming dance routines for their end of term assessment. Through dance, students represent, question and celebrate human experience, using the body as the instrument and movement as the medium for personal, social, emotional, spiritual and physical communication. Miss McGurk invited me along to watch the performances, and I was totally amazed with the wonderful artistic expressions and movements that the students demonstrated. All of the students were excited to show me how they have used their bodies as the instrument of expression to communicate and c meaning through expressive and purposeful movement. Look closely and see if you can find our Guidance Officer (Mrs Hancock) being a tricky photobomber! Fantastic work Year 5/6 students and Miss McGurk! As you can see from the photographs, our students are having a great time with their learning and are fully engaged in what they are doing. I hope your all have a great two weeks ahead. Yours in learning, Jenny 2020 – Curriculum & Culture
From our Guidance Officer Kerri Hancock Helpful Hints from the Guidance Officer The Benefit of Exercise for Children (and adults too). Many people attribute good health to being active. Ensuring that your children get enough exercise is critical to their physical and emotional wellbeing. Sometimes this is not so easy in our busy, high tech world. Not so long ago, kids naturally went outside to play. That’s because there weren’t that many options. Outside was where you found and made friends, sorted social problems, threw or kicked a ball around, climbed trees, played hopscotch, or just went adventuring, returning home as the sun went down for dinner. I remember arriving home exhausted after a day of school followed by 2 hours of softball or netball practice and a long bike ride home – up hill!. Today, things are very different. Kids spend a lot of time indoors, on phones, computers or tablets, and watching television. Research shows they spend less time enjoying outdoor activities. This is a problem with far-reaching consequences. There are many reasons why kids need to be active and here are just a few: Physical health benefits Exercise makes your kids healthier, more attentive and more social. Active kids enjoy stronger immune systems, stronger hearts and lungs, and stronger bone and muscle structure. Exercise improves blood flow, ensuring that more oxygen reaches your kid’s heart and brain, promoting higher energy levels. Activity also makes kids breathe and perspire more efficiently, which helps to naturally remove toxins from the body. Better mental health ‘Healthy body – healthy mind.’ This may be a cliché statement but it rings true to mental health practitioners. In addition to the numerous physical benefits, studies have shown that active kids also enjoy better mental health, including: • Better memory • Ability to focus and concentrate for longer • Improved mood – less mood swings • A general improvement in their physical and emotional well-being Simple activities can quickly elevate depressed mood in many people. A short 10-minute walk is a good way to relieve anxiety and depression in children. There is evidence that starting exercise at a young age will decrease rates of anxiety and depression in children and adolescence. Physical activity may improve their mood by helping the brain cope better with stress. Friendship and Learning Achievement for All
More confidence & better social skills Kids who engage in sports of any kind, whether individual or team oriented, are more confident, able to work well in a team, and develop better social skills. These are important 21st century skills. When kids have high self-esteem, they are more likely to be happier, more optimistic and more inclined to aspire to leadership roles later in life. Any exercise will do Exercise does not have to be competitive, and kids do not have to play rugby, netball or soccer to reap the benefits. Walks on the beach or bush tracks, a bike ride, climbing and swinging at the park or a playing a game of catch with their mates in the back yard will do. As long as kids exercise within their limits, don’t overdo it, and enjoy the activity, you will notice positive results you never thought possible. Well-rounded kids Some kids are just not sporty and don’t enjoy exercise. This can become ingrained in them at a young age, but you can change this. Show them the different ways they can enjoy exercise and explain the benefits. We are not all built to be elite athletes. One benefit of exercise is that active kids often become well-rounded individuals, who find it easier to connect with their peers and enjoy a healthier and more social existence. Successful students and adults have often tried loads of different physical activities before settling on what they were good at and what they enjoyed. Encouraging your kids to enjoy being active can benefit them well into their adult years. Help them find an exercise they enjoy, and they will have benefits. The key to an active lifestyle is fun and regularity of activity. It must be enjoyable for kids. Join in with the fun and you can reap the benefits too. Kerri Hancock 2020 – Curriculum & Culture
