THE URSULINE ACADEMY ILFORD A Catholic Academy for Girls Weekly News – Issue 6 13th October 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians Headteacher’s Headlines… F1 On Wednesday evening, we held our Commissioning service for Year 7 students. We were very pleased to welcome Sr. Alice Montgomery, an Ursuline sister and former teacher at Ilford, to speak and present the badges. Thank you to those parents who supported the school and their daughters by attending, it was a good turnout! The girls did their parents and the school proud with their singing and with the commitment, they have made to SERVIAM. Each girl received her Serviam badge (Red for Year 7) which we hope they will wear with pride, and a card specially printed from the Ursuline sisters welcoming them with some inspiring words from our founder, Angela Merici. The girls now fully belong here and understand what it means to be an Ursuline girl. It also brings with it the responsibility of living out the Serviam motto every single day. Next Saturday (21st October) is the feast day of St Ursula. This will be marked with a non- uniform day in school on Friday 20th which will raise money for Ursuline Links. This excellent charity has obvious links with our school and the day and enables students to volunteer and serve the less fortunate and live out SERVIAM in a wide variety of ways. The cost of the non- uniform day will be £2. Sixth formers will be coming around the forms next week to collect money from students. Please encourage your daughter to bring their money early in the week rather than on Friday. You may remember that our own Mrs Edna Reilly has been nominated for Teacher of the Year and is to attend the prestigious UK grand finale of the Pearson Teaching Awards for her exceptional contribution to the teaching profession. The ceremony takes place at The East Wintergarden, London, where she will find out if she has won the prestigious Gold Plato Award. The glittering awards ceremony will be televised so tune in to watch or set your recorders! The ceremony, hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty with Countryfile's Sean Fletcher, will be broadcast on BBC2 at 6pm on 29th October, as “Britain’s Classroom Heroes”. We wish Mrs. Reilly good luck - whatever the outcome we are proud of her and grateful for the contribution she makes at Ursuline. Serviam! Our Open Evening for admission to the Sixth Form takes place on Tuesday 7th November at 6pm. It is important that Year 11 students and their parents attend this evening even if they are considering moving on. Having spent their formative years at Ursuline our girls should be already 1
aware of the supportive and purposeful working environment within the school where all students are seen as individuals, each with her own strengths, potential and hopes, which are truly nurtured here. We are a small sixth form which means we know our students very well and based on this we can tailor enrichment opportunities for each person. I hope to welcome you all personally and will speak at 6pm in the Hall. Break time in my office this week was with six of our top performing students in year 11. Ayesha Khan, Ambra Kumbalatara, Avneet Sanghera, Jamema Mirza, Roshan-Aara Omar and Michelle Mentu. This time of year can be quite stressful with mock exams looming in December so I was anxious to reassure them that support is available should they need it. It was also good to hear some of their plans for next year and the future and it looks like we have some budding Medics and Lawyers! I hope that the girls will consider staying at Ursuline where they should be eligible for one of our new Scholarships to help support them in their learning. (See School website for details). Next week I will be meeting with 6/7 more students from Year 11. This week’s Mental Health Awareness week was a resounding success- on Tuesday Ursuline went yellow! The rowing competition was fiercely fought but of course the teachers’ team trounced the GCSE PE girls! There was of course a serious message to convey but awareness was raised and a fantastic day was had by all see evaluations and pictures below on Pages 5-7. Thanks again to Ms Keogh and her GCSE PE girls for their organisation and support. Chaplaincy News Pope Francis @Pontifex · October 10th God does not disappoint! He has placed hope in our hearts so that it can blossom and bear fruit. Forward in Joy – 366 days with Angela Merici - Daily words of wisdom from our patron saint October: Be Shepherds 13th October: Who can judge the heart and the innermost secret thoughts of any creature? 14th October: God has given free will to everyone, and wants to force no one, but only proposes, invites and counsels. 15th October: Do your duty, correcting them with love and charity. 16th October: Comfort them, so that they may go forward willingly. 17th October: I do not say, however, that it will not be necessary occasionally to use reproaches and severity, at the right place and time. 18th October: One must be careful and prudent. 19th October: Bear with them all equally, for it is not up to you to judge. Retreats And so, we end this year’s year 7 retreats with 7.1 and 7.3. Here are some thoughts prayers, poems and advice from the girls… 2
A poem on Equality Fight for equality in the world Be a super hero and be bold. Racism, culture and gender, Everyone should be treated better. I’m Justice and I fight for equality, Make a difference to the world just like me. A superhero song (to the tune of Hall of fame) You don’t need powers, you don’t need strength You can help anyone no matter where. You can be a hero, you can be heard You can do it all with the help of faith. Everyone’s a hero in their own way We’re all unique in our own way There’s a special thing inside of you You just have to find the right time and you’ll be... Standing in the hall of Fame. Superheroes! Our group’s made up superhero was called Active Angela. Here are some of the things she stood up for… Men and women can both play the same sport, Don’t judge people by their gender Boy or girl, they can do what they want. Although we are different, we have equal rights No matter who we are, we are all God’s children and we must treat each other equally. Reflections on the day Today we got to know each other. We played rock paper scissors in a chain. We played charades and sung some songs. My favourites were; Shine Jesus Shine and peanut butter and Jelly. We learnt that we can all be heroes. We did some teamwork with our sixth form leaders, and played heads and tails, and a Disney action game. Inside we are all super heroes no matter what and that’s what makes us special. If someone is rude to someone, always follow your heart and help them. So don’t be hard on yourself. Our Superhero is GOD! Some other heroes we have are… Police, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Malala, Firemen, Family, Marie Curie, Doctors, Nelson Mandella. I protect my sister from danger. Superheroes are protective and selfless. They are faithful and can be trusted. Anyone can be a hero. God is my superhero! 3
Evaluation comments I liked the way we all prayed for the less fortunate, and those who have been affected by hurricanes and earthquakes It is good to pray to God, and that we closed our eyes I liked that we came together at the end to reflect and pray I enjoyed having the sixth form with us and I enjoyed the small group projects I liked everything! I am so happy that I could spend time praying I enjoyed the signing and the rapping I learnt that God is our superhero and we don’t all have to be born with super powers, you can become a hero with your personality, gifts and talents I liked the prayer because it was peaceful and a good time to reflect It was fun and the sixth formers, Cleo and Hannah made it such a fun day – I want to thank them for this, for making it such an amazing day. I want to have another day like this! Cleo Gammon, Chaplain Ursuline World Mental Health Day On Tuesday 10th October, we were all trying to raise awareness for World Mental Health Day. All week we have been researching and spending time looking at all of the different types of mental health and coping strategies for people with a mental illness. On Tuesday everyone had the opportunity to come in with yellow accessories, which the young minds charity were promoting. Our school did a #wearyellowaccessorieday. Many students and teachers came in with ribbon in their hair, yellow shoelaces and even some had yellow balloons. Also a big thank you to 10.2 who decorated their classroom door to help raise awareness of such a good charity. “I really enjoyed world mental health awareness day. It was a nice opportunity to get out of class and have a competitive rowing race, with our classmates. We wore yellow accessories to remember those who suffer from mental health illnesses” Jesica Sabau (Year 8) “It was a great day; it was really good to see everybody getting involved and enjoying themselves. At first, many people were apprehensive but that quickly changed and it was replaced with excitement. Even the less optimistic sixth formers got involved and did an excellent job! The teachers also did a decent job at beating 4
the GCSE PE girls and sixth form students, despite the fact that Mr Challis and the others needed the help from the Rowing Coach (Ex GB Rower)” Audrey Fidegnon (Year 11) On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have London Youth Rowing come in to help promote a healthy mind and healthy active lifestyle. Each period we had a different year group out competing in the gym. Every form group were split into three teams and had boat races to see who could row the furthest. Results are below: Results: Year 11: 1st Place: 11.2 Team 1 Year 10: 1st Place: 10.2 Team 2 Year 9: 1st Place: 9.3 Team 1 Year 8: 1st Place: 8.4 Team 2 Year 7: 1st Place: 7.1 Team 3 Teacher’s vs Sixth formers: 1st Place: Teachers 5
