TERM 2 WEEK 5 2019

                 SUSTAINABILTY
                  SYMPOSIUM
This year, for the first time, both primary and secondary students on the
Sathya Sai Sustainability Committee have been very fortunate to be invited to
attend the inaugural Sustainability Symposium on the Gold Coast in May.

The whole day event was aimed at school students and teachers and
encouraged the strengthening of sustainability education. Some of the popular
speakers amongst the students were Melati Wijsen from Bye Bye Plastic
Bags, Molly Steer from Straw No More and Holley Somerville-Knott from Tell
Someone Who Cares.

The day was sponsored by the Tweed Shire Council who supplied the entry
tickets and transportation. As an initiative to encourage sustainability
education, the Tweed Council are also continuing to work with the school on
our next major project.

The students were very inspired to act on sustainability within our school and
local community and look forward to starting the next project. We hope to let
you know further details in the next newsletter. Thank you to all those who
attended and represented the school as mature, young, sensible adults.

Unfortunately Mr & Mrs Chetty are both struggling with ill health. We all wish
them both a fast recovery.

It is uncertain when they will return at this stage. Your patience and support
for the casual teachers who are fulfilling their roles is greatly appreciated.

leave a message with Kirsty or contact me via email.

 RELIEVING TEACHERS
Amanda Schaefer – Maths

I’d like to introduce myself, I am Amanda Schaefer. I am teaching Maths for a
few weeks at Sathya Sai College. I love children and teaching Maths and
hope to pass this love onto my students. Please feel free to contact me at any
time if you have any concerns.

Edwina Williams – English

Hello Sathya Sai families, I am Edwina Williams. I'm fortunate enough to be
covering English classes for the time being at this beautiful school. I've been
really impressed by the values demonstrated by the students at Sathya Sai
and have been made to feel very welcome by both students and staff.

I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to work in such a unique
setting and I look forward to getting to know your children better, and to work
with them over the coming weeks. I have lived in the area for just over
eighteen months, having relocated from the Blue Mountains and have fully
embraced life in the Tweed Valley. On weekends I coach my daughter's
soccer team, so may see some of you at sporting fields sometime.

TERM 2 WEEK 5 2019

                   YEAR 7 EHV
Education in Human Values

Our five values: Love, Truth, Peace, Right Conduct and Non Violence.

For year 7 students our value focus was: “Right conduct lived as
dependability.”

After a class discussion students were asked: “How does your family depend
on YOU?”

Below are some responses.

Taila: Keeping my room tidy. Feeding our animals. Getting myself ready for
school.

Elijah: I set and clear the mouse traps. Putting my clothes away. Making my
bed.

Mia: When our chicks hatched I had to make sure they were all safe in their
cage. I make sure our dog goes outside when he needs to. I take my lunch
box out of my bag at the end of the day.

Millie: I look after my dog. Sometimes I cook. I pack the dishwasher.

Noah: I make my own lunch. Take out the rubbish. Clean and mop the
bathroom.

Westley: Make a cup of tea for my nan. Cleaning the dishes. Keep my room
tidy.

Sol: I cuddle my mum if she is sad. I make dinner once a week. I help unpack
the car.

Reading students responses made me realise what a lovely and kind group of
students I have the pleasure of teaching!

Blessings, Jane

CROSS COUNTRY NCIS
On the 17th of May students from both the primary and high school campus
headed down to Lennox Head for the annual North Coast Independent
schools (NCIS) Cross Country. The day started with an overcast morning
packed full of excited athletes ready to test their endurance against one
another.

After walking the track, students became aware it was going to be a hard race
with a lot of sand to push against. As the day unfolded, patches of rain and
sunshine provided a blessing or a curse, for students.

Some athletes like Noah Bowden—a year 8 student from the high school
campus—welcomed the cooling condition running 2mins faster than his
school race, making him come 6th in the U14 boys. Noah will progress to the
next round CIS in Sydney on the 13th of June. Good luck Noah.

Another incredible run on the
day was 8 year old boy Xavier
Clow. He pushed himself very
hard on the day finishing 10th
overall in the 8/9 boys. A huge
effort especially being bottom
of his age group. Well done
X a v i e r. A l s o a g i g a n t i c
congratulations to all the
students from Sathya Sai
College who made it down for
the day.

Furthermore, a massive thank
you to the P& F ladies who
ran a vegetarian BBQ for all of
the schools, providing them
with a nutritious home cooked
meal for lunch.

Term 2 Technology Mandatory stage 4 has seen the creation of a sewing/
textiles area where students are re-purposing fabrics and materials to
construct an owl door stop.

Students are learning to use an iron, Singer sewing machine and some basic
hand stitching to complete the project.

             STAGE 5 FOOD
             TECHNOLOGY
In Term 2 stage 5 food technology students are undertaking the unit on foods
for special needs. The students had to create an attractive sandwich and fruit
plate to appeal to young children.

             TAFE NSW CUP
                NETBALL
In week 2, three netball teams from the high school campus headed north to
Arkinstall Park, Tweed Heads to play in the Far North Coast TAFE NSW Cup
netball competition. The day was full of students from independent, CSO and
public schools providing the students with a range of athletes to compete
against.

Our school had three teams; 7/8 girls, 9/10 girls and 9/10 boys. On the day
the 9/10 teams got to play both against the boys and the girls. On the day the
girls showed their dominance on a netball court showing great speed and
agility.

All of the teams improved on the day with each game. Students will be
heading back to Tweed Heads for the NCIS netball in term 3. Massive thank
you to coach Leah and coach Annette for your tireless efforts with the teams.

          YEAR 9 MUSEUM
             EXHIBITS
The year 9 HSIE class recently extended their studies of World War One
through an Australian War Memorial Resource Box. The box contained a
range of WWI artefacts, including uniforms, original postcards, medals, maps,
hats and even a Two Up game with old one-penny coins.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to create museum exhibits with the
artefacts and our Cadets were excited to compare the uniforms to their own
modern versions.

A big thank you to the amazing yoga teacher Keenan, who volunteered his

His incredible energy was infectious and hopefully students will be drawn to
