Field Experience Timing (as of now) • FE1 – Fall or Spring • FE2 – Spring (April-May) • FE3 – Fall (DISE students start before Fall term begins!) • FE4 – Winter Field Experiences are only done “off-cycle” (e.g. not in the above terms) on exceptional, case-by-case bases Faculty of Education
Placement Process ISA Office sends student teachers the link & important info Student Students teacher is have one notified of week to fill placement out the form (~1-2 weeks before start (Takes a few date) minutes) Once the A placement form is is secured at closed, a host school students can based on this no longer fill information out the form Placement Coordinators process and organize the information received Faculty of Education
What can you do now • Make sure you have registered for EDFE 200/209 (Secondary, K/Elem, TESL) if doing FE1 in Fall 2019 term • Update your mailing address and phone number on Minerva • Review the Student Teaching section of the ISA website (placement process, dates, e-Handbook, policies, forms…): https://www.mcgill.ca/isa/teaching • Stay tuned for an email from ISA about the placement form opening • Get in touch with the Office of Students with Disabilities, if you believe you may need accommodations in the field Note: Students are not permitted to contact teachers or schools themselves to make arrangements for a placement! English Exam (EETC) B.Ed. students must write and pass the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC) as part of their degree program: • In October, students register on Minerva for EDEC 215 (0 credit) and for EETC on CEETC website (BOTH required!) • Exam will take place in December • Check your McGill e-mail often for updates! • Must pass this exam prior to going on 3rd Field Experience • Tip: Take it now so you have ample opportunity to pass ahead of FE3! Transition to University The transition to university is a big one and you need to be an active agent in your academic and personal success, such as by: • Connect with your Academic Advisor at least once per term • Familiarizing yourself with the Faculty’s spaces and services (ISA Office, cafeteria, EdUS/SAPKE/MEdUSA, Career Services, etc.) • Ask questions and seek help early • Attend events and workshops offered through the University, Faculty, and student societies • Find out about support services offered at McGill, including Peer Support, Wellness Hub, Scholarships and Student Aid, etc. Faculty of Education
Do your research McGill is a decentralized University, meaning Faculties and programs do NOT all operate in the same way. Go international Exchange, Study Away and summer internship opportunities are great ways to enhance your experience here at McGill; but remember: • Plan ahead with your Academic Advisor; most programs are highly prescribed and there are better/worse terms for Exchange • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 required for most opportunities • Minimum of 12 McGill graded credits completed at time of application • B.Ed. students cannot go on exchange during Field Experience terms (but can do distance placement for FE4) Faculty of Education
