IOL • Welcoming Booklet DEAR IOL STUDENT Thank you for choosing the Institute for Open Learning (IOL) as your partner in Education. Congratulations, you are now successfully registered as an IOL student; welcome to the IOL team! We are proud to inform you that all IOL Academic and Business School courses are registered with the: • National Council for Higher Education (NCHE); • Namibian Training Authority (NTA); and • We are accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA). You will receive an SMS with your student number, registered subjects and the password to the Student Portal. REGISTRATION, & ASSIGNMENT EXAMINATION D U E D A T E S One of the advantages of studying at IOL is that you can register for any of our courses at any time of the year. However, it is important to take note of the following dates: SEMESTER (Registration) EXAMINATION ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE First Semester April/May (during the school Register before 15 January holiday) 15 November Second Semester August/September (during the Register before 15 June school holiday) 15 April Supplementary Examination November /December Not applicable Supplementary examinations will only be written if the student provides a medical certificate (in the case of absence) or if a student obtains a 45-49% mark in the examinations. The dispatching of electronic books/ Kindles, textbooks and study guides WEBSITE will be done directly from the IOL Head Office in Windhoek. Study material will be delivered through www.iol.na postal or courier services. IOL will dispatch the study material to the nearest IOL Regional Offices or Nampost office. Study material sent through the local postal services, must be collected from the Post Office within 15 working days. If the material is not collected within the stipulated 15 working days it will be returned to IOL. If you have not received your material within 3 weeks after registration, you should contact 3

When experiencing trouble logging onto the Student Portal, visit the IOL Website at www.iol.na click on the ‘Student Portal’ link. The link will take you to the log in page. You will be redirected to a new page where you will be asked to enter your student number, year of registration and your mobile number. Once these details AVAILABLE ON have been entered, a new password will be sent to you via text message STUDENT and you will be able to log onto the Student Portal using the new PORTAL password. 4

This means the latest version of the full Office productivity suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and more available for offline and online use to best prepare you for your studies and career ahead. As long as you’re a student and the programme continues, you’ll be able to use this software for free! What does this mean to you? • Install Office on up to 5 2 compatible PCs and Macs, plus 5 2 tablets (including iPad!); •2 Use with OneDrive for automatic 2 device syncing; •2 Gain valuable skills on the world’s 2 most popular productivity software, 2 and •2 Use the same programs as your 2 professors to ensure full file fidelity. FREE ENGLISH GRAMMAR COURSE A free English Grammar Course is included in all programmes with your username and password you now have access to complete the online English Grammar Course. You will however need access to the internet. Log into the official IOL website (www.iol.na) then click on the smart education log-in link at the bottom of the page. • 2 A small interface will open 2 and prompt you to enter your 2 USERNAME and PASSWORD, 2 which you should have received 2 via SMS. • 2 Before accessing a course for 2 the first time,you will be asked to 2 complete the Course Skill 2 Assessment, consists of about 30 2 questions, (randomly selected). • 2 The Assessment will assist you 2 in selecting the course content 2 best suited for your interest and 2 skill level, creating a customised 2 learning path for you. 6

STUDY BUDDY SYSTEM The study buddy system was initiated to encourage study groups amongst students studying the same academic field in their area. INFORMATION BOOKLET A free course information booklet is also available on request at your nearest IOL Regional Office. This booklet contains all information needed regarding your course. IMPORTANT COURSE SPECIFIC INFORMATION The table below indicates important information regarding your course, the duration thereof and the NQA level. You will also find information on when you qualify to do your School Based Studies and whether or not Basic First Aid certification is necessary. 10

Should the duration of your course be exceeded, your studies will be terminated. Before your last examination opportunity, you will receive a notice informing you that you only have one more opportunity before termination of your studies. You will also be informed students of your academic progress annually. SCHOOL BASED STUDIES - SBS School Based Studies (SBS) is a compulsory subject for all Education courses, except BEDHONS. A student has to qualify to do this subject at a school for a specific period – see table above. Students will only receive their School Based Studies Guide and procedures once they qualify for the phase. BASIC FIRST AID - BFA Basic First Aid is a compulsory subject for the Diploma in Pre-Primary and the Bachelor Education: Senior Primary Degree – see table above. Basic First Aid will work as follows: The student will be informed via text message and have to book for the BFA training that will be presented on Saturdays. The Basic First Aid training expenses are covered by IOL. If a student booked and misses the scheduled training or fail the training for whatever reason, the student will be required to pay for the next training 12
Institute for Opening Learning • Welcoming Booklet Students have an option to attend their BFA training elsewhere for as long as the provider of the course is accredited. Students have to make sure that their certificate is valid upon completion of their courses for them to be allowed to graduate. ASSIGNMENTS Assignments ensures a student admission to the examination. Once you met the minimum requirements for the examination and you fail the examination, you do not need to resubmit the assignment. ASSIGNMENT AND EXAMINATION DUE DATES (Ref to Page 2 for table) Assignments may not be submitted electronically. EXAMINATION VENUES Examination venues are indicated on the application form and your preferred venue was chosen when you completed your application form. A text message will be forwarded before every examination informing students of the due date for change of venue. A “change of venue’ form needs to be completed at your nearest regional office if you wish to write examination at a different venue than selected on your application form. You can only write examination at the examination venue indicated on your Admission Permit. ASSESSMENT POLICY • Assignments give you admission to the examination. You need an average of 50% for assignment (SM=Semester mark) to qualify to write the examination. • You need an average of 50% for your examination (EM=Examination mark) to pass the subject. • Assignment mark (SM) and Examination mark (EM) total the subject’s final mark (FM)the ratio is EM = 60% and SM = 40% to give you a FM • Pass mark is 50% EXAMINATION CREDITS IOL students have 2 examination credits for each subject, where IUM students only have one examination credit, therefore if an IOL student fails a subject; they will be allowed a free examination re-write. Should a subject be failed for the second time, you will have to re-register for that specific subject. That subject can then be written during the next examination session. 13
