The dog days of summer are upon us. As we look forward to our favorite time of year, the fall and multiple hunting seasons, there are many things that are happening around us. The opportunity to add wolves to a fair chase hunting season is currently being pursued with assistance from SCI. The MDNR has confirmed two cases of Covid antibodies in white tailed deer. Testing for CWD is a major focus on the upcoming fall harvest with the intent on formalizing a plan to mitigate the negative effects of this disease. The chapter has been busy planning some activities to get more new members, retain expired members and engage current members with events. The first of two events are planned and have been noted in the previous newsletters a) Women’s Pheasant Hunt at Muzzy Pheasant Farm on September 25th, b) Youth Pheasant Hunt at Muzzy Pheasant Farm on October 17th. If you have anyone interested in attending visit the website for details. We combined the awards banquet and the Christmas Party into one event this year at Woodfield Country Club on December 16th. The deadline for awards submission is October 1st. Some new opportunities to join the club have been opened for members. You can now join the chapter as a lifetime member for $500.00. We are planning the first ever Big Buck night for 2022 showcasing your harvest and stories from the 2021 hunting season. Mark the date on your calendar now, Thursday February 3rd (the Thursday before the Superbowl). We will be awarding prizes, measuring antlers, and accepting entries into the record book while sharing memories from this year’s hunts. Details will be shared in future communications in our newsletter and on the website. Kudos to all of you who are engaging in our social media outlets and sharing photos in the newsletter. Your involvement drives the direction and activities of the chapter. Your stories are welcomed and will be published in our newsletter so that we can provide recognition and share in your memories. As we get closer to opening day of the multitude of seasons coming upon us, remember to take a kid a field and play it forward for future generations. Honks, quacks, grunts and cackles await in the great outdoor theater we all call our “stomping grounds”! Good luck and happy hunting. www.sciflint.org
MEMBER NEWS WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST VOLUNTEER This month the Flint Chapter added another volunteer to our team. Chad Hilgendorf has been a long time Flint SCI member and supporter. Even after relocating to Wisconsin, Chad has continued to work and help the chapter. Chad works primarily with the guns at the annual fundraiser, helping us order the guns and run the games and other events. Thanks for your help Chad. If you would be willing to volunteer to help the chapter with any activities please email us at safariclub.flint@gmail.com letting us know your interest and how you would be willing to help. www.sciflint.org
MEMBER NEWS I had the amazing privilege of attending a training in Jackson, Wyoming. The training was at American Wilderness Leadership School. Individuals from all over the U.S. and throughout all levels of education attended the training from Sunday to Saturday. Everyone earned credit hours and numerous certifications. The main focus was around the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. There are so many cross-curricular lessons, activities, and games that can be implemented throughout grades K-12. It was incredible! I made some amazing friends and connections during my time. We learned a wealth of knowledge during this time about conservation, outdoor survival skills, guns, archery, biology of species in the wild, fire, plant and animals I feel blessed to be able to have this experience! All of our instructors and presenters were all so incredibly intelligent and I just felt honored to be around them and have the chance to be able to have a conversation with them. I would recommend this training to anyone of my coworkers. Thomas Zacek www.sciflint.org
