Message from Virginia Montague - Principal
Tēnā koutou Parents / Caregivers / Sunnynook Families

I received some beautiful cards of thanks this week as did our Year 6 teachers and parent helpers
from our Year 6 students. The camp out was a wonderful experience for all and an opportunity to
celebrate together. Thank you for my lovely cards. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and
commitment of our Year 6 teachers: Mrs Duffield, Ms Cadness and Mrs Hagen. Not wanting the
students to miss out after the camp was cancelled due to COVID, they organised a fabulous few days
for our Year 6s. Thank you too, to the wonderful group of parents who helped out over this time.

We have an exciting and very busy few weeks coming up before school finishes
for the year. Our end of year Prizegiving Assembly takes place on Friday, 11th
December at 11am. We will be celebrating with Year 6 parents and families and
acknowledging our students who will be receiving the Endeavour Award. If this
is your child, the class teacher will have contacted you to let you know. During
this final assembly our Year 6 students will receive their graduation certificates
and house badges. It will also be an opportunity for the children and community
to farewell Mrs East our Deputy Principal who is leaving Sunnynoook to take up
her new post as Principal of our local Wairau Intermediate School. Parents who
would like to are invited to stay for tea and cake to say their farewells to
 Yolanda.

The Board of Trustees Mid Term Elections closing date, 4 December – 4pm is drawing
near. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you cast your 2 votes in your sealed
envelope. Our sealed, BOT voting box is at the school reception. To recap the
candidates, please read the candidate statements, Jarrel Beazley, Nijat Iman,
Rebecca Tindall, Michelle Pou and Darius Witana.

We would like to thank the fine people at the Spencer Apartments Takapuna
for the new pool cover. It is greatly appreciated.

Ngā mihi
Virginia

 Diwali Celebrations 11 – 13 November
The Festival of Lights - 'Diwali' was celebrated with great
fervour and enthusiasm by students and teachers at
Sunnynook Primary School. Students explored one of the
most famous legends and learnt about the significance of
Diwali which is the triumph of good over evil, light over
darkness and time for new beginnings. The spirit of festivity
was enhanced with various scintillating activities planned
 from 11th Nov - 13th Nov 2020. Students wholeheartedly
participated in activities like lantern making, Diya and
Rangoli decoration. The entire event was imbued with the
spirit of festivity, filled with joy and happiness.

Student Voice:
Last week we celebrated Diwali. Mrs Batra helped us to make some things for
Diwali. The first thing we made was a lantern. The second thing for year 4-6 was
a rangoli pattern outside the tech room. The second thing for the year 1-3 was a
rangoli pattern on a paper plate. We loved the rangoli patterns decorated with
lots of glitters that made them sparkly. On Friday we made colourful rangoli
pattern rings and year 4-6 painted diyas. We also loved that we could take them
home. By Suwon, Room 18
I enjoyed celebrating Diwali at my school. I made a lantern
and coloured a rangoli pattern on a paper plate. It was so
 much fun.

Year 6 EOTC – 18 – 20 December
We had a journalist from the Rangitoto Observer visit us during our camp. Click on the link - we made the
front page!! Photo compliments of Rangitoto Observer: Happy campers... below: the assembled year-6
campers at Sunnynook Primary

EOTC was an amazing experience. We did Go Karting , Pikelet making and much
more . Plus the food was delicious , We had burgers for dinner and toast for breakfast,
 Everything was super yummy.

My favorite activities were the makey makey crafts and pikelet making.(FYI the
pikelets were super tasty) For crafts we got to make whatever we wanted to. I made
a little bag from the fabric and then I made a bracelet out of pipe. (Special thanks to
Mrs Duffield for running the station)

The food was so good. Everyone bought in a little bit to share for morning tea, this
ranged from Doughnuts to Pizza Slices. Sometimes there was so much food we got to
take as much as we wanted to.

All of this could not have been possible without the help of the teachers and the parent helpers Thanks to
them for making Eotc so awesome.

On November Wednesday 18 - 19, the year 6 students had an awesome EOTC camp out at Sunnynook
School. Everyone was excited and ready to start the fun EOTC, at school!

All of the Year 6s arrived at school a little earlier than usual at
school and placed our stuff out on the senior netball court while
we waited for the start of school bell (9:00 - 8:45). Once the bell
had rang we were all put in our groups and lined up for the start
of the activities. But first we had to set up our tents up on the senior
side of the field.

After that, we went back into our groups and were called what
activity we were going on. These are the activities...
"Me ako kia angit " ai ng " r " e heke mai" - sunnynook.school.nz
Activities: (Not in particular order)

 1. Go Karts 6. Robotics (Stem)
 2. Cryptic Word Hunt 7. Arts And Crafts
 3. Qr Code Scan Hunt 8. Team Work (Obstacles)
 4. Pikelets 9. Bush Walk
 5. Makey Makey 10. Skateboards and Scooters

My Group (7) - manage to do 5 activities each day.

At morning tea on the first day it was pouring down with rain and I was stuck
in my tent for a while. Once the rain slowly calmed down the people who
were in the tents went down for shared morning tea.

Then later that day, the teachers said, “Tonight it is going to be windy and
rainy and the tents could possibly fall down or even worse, get damaged.
So… The boys will be sleeping in the hall and the girls will be sleeping in the
library.” Then we did lots more activities

So we went to pack down our tents and moved into the hall and the library.
Later that evening, around 5:00 we had a big game of capture the flag!
Some of the others went to do the go karts. Afterwards I went to have a few goes on the Go- Kart and the
second round,... I got to drive it. On the first go though I sat in the passenger seat. It Was Awesome!

We all had burgers and chips for dinner, and it was delicious. After dinner we watched a movie in the…
Staffroom! We watched “Flushed Away'', and in my opinion, I thought it was really funny, so did the other
Year 6s.

When the movie had finished we all got ready for bed and most people got to sleep late!

The next day, we had breakfast - Weetbix or Cornflakes with a side of toast. We went back to activities
and it was so much fun for the rest of the activities, same with one's yesterday. We had a shared lunch and
the food was also delicious.

Finally, at the end of the day, we all said thank you for the people that
helped with the awesome year 6 EOTC.

Year 5 Student Action Team –

The time had finally come for our SPS Student Action Team to share our ideas with the rest of the Pupuke
Kahui Ako Student Action Teams. Our school logo came up on the TV screen and then, it was our turn. We
stood up, grinning nervously, and we filed up the side aisle onto the stage area. Mrs Cleaver flicked onto
our own Google Slide and it came up on the TV screen behind us.

Hunter spoke first and introduced our quiet space and how we will be working with Rotary NZ. Jolie spoke
second and voiced our thoughts and suggestions about the floor plan and furniture. She talked about the
couches that we want and the suggested layout of the floor. Next, Jasmine spoke about the wall space
and how we want a mural wall and a wall with many textures and smells, including furry patches, smooth
spots, and scratchy splotches. Then Isla talked about all the accessories and toys that we want to have in
our quiet space such as soft toys, cushions, fidget toys, and squishies.

After that Renēe discussed the things that will be in our outdoor space. She talked about the things we
want to put in our outdoor space, such as outdoor cushions, wood benches and a sensory garden. After
that, J.D and Shavain both made clear the rules in our quiet space. J.D introduced why we had the rules
and the Quiet Space Pass. You needed a Quiet Space Pass to get into the quiet space, otherwise random
people might come into the quiet space, making the quiet space noisy. J.D also talked about the people
who will monitor the space, taking and checking the Passes. Shavain then stepped up to talk about the
draft nine rules for our quiet space. Last to talk was Amy. She spoke about what our plans were for 2021
and working with the teachers and Rotary New Zealand.

“They’re Year Five students, actually.” Mrs Cleaver said after we sat down. The Year Sixes and over stared
at us, mouths hanging open and eyes wide. But their attention was quickly diverted, thankfully, as there
was one more school after us (Westlake Girls). Then it was snack time. There were mini bread wraps,
sausage rolls, veggie sausage rolls and red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. The Westlake Girls SAT
came to see our work that we had laid out on our table at the back of the room. We had the snacks and
played a quick game of Busted on the playground before we had to go back to school. We all had the
best time ever in the Student Action Team.
