12-15-2019 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY’S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10 James 5:7-10 Matthew 11:2-11 A Message from Father Don Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: In today’s Gospel, Jesus quotes passages from the book of Isaiah when he wants to assure John the Baptist that he is truly the Messiah. These passages picture the time of the Messiah as marked by the same kind of works that Jesus is doing. Jesus heals the blind, the lame, the deaf, and the lepers. He raises the dead and proclaims the good news to the poor. These loving and powerful deeds are proof of his identity. Because John has opened people’s hearts to the Savior’s coming, Jesus says that John is the greatest of the prophets. In our culture, we have many kinds of heroes. The people of Jesus’ time were looking for heroes, too. They asked Jesus, “Are you the real one?” The Gospel lists some actions of Jesus, the actions of a real-life hero. We, too, can be like John, and as Jesus said, even greater than John, when we share Jesus’ mission of making God’s Kingdom come. As we grow closer to Christmas, I ask that together with your family determine what you can do nurture and help grow in the grace of your Christian life. Discern how you will prepare the way of the Lord for all those who cross your daily path. Do not just sit and wait, but rather get ready for Jesus by living the way Jesus taught us to. We would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone who has joined us for today’s liturgy. We are so delighted to have you here. To those of you who are visi ng us, thank you for giving us your me and we hope you will be encouraged to join our parish. We are known as the “Friendly Parish” and want to include you and your family as part of our faith community. If inclined, please fill out a new member card located in the Gathering Area or register online at www.saintrita.com so that we can stay in touch and let you know about our upcoming events. May God bless you and your family! 3
