Fincastle UMC Flyer A Publication of Fincastle United Methodist Church June-July 2021 Our Vision FUMC is a community of faith that welcomes all and seeks to embody the Spirit of God in Jesus Christ through radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking mission and service and extravagant generosity. FUMC’s 2021 Graduates Ethan Humbert Graduated from Roanoke College with a degree in Business. Ethan has been working while going to school and will continue there for now while looking for his next career step. Chris Fechisin Graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics and Mathematics. This fall, Chris will begin a PhD program in Physics at the University of Maryland. Jack Butler Jack is graduating from Community High School His plan is to earn an A.S. of Science at Virginia Western C. C. and then transfer to Virginia Tech to complete a B.S. in Fish and Wildlife Conservation. These graduates will be recognized during the 10 am worship service on Sunday, June 6th. We hope you can join us to applaud their successes and wish them well in their future endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS Ethan, Chris and Jack!!

We as a church have been given the opportunity to take these immediate steps with the approval of the HCT and the pastor, which has been done. Here are those steps: • Fully vaccinated leaders may preach without a mask • Fully vaccinated persons may be unmasked in indoor and outdoor settings • Fully vaccinated persons may sing without a mask indoors and outdoors • Eating outdoors may occur with individually packed meals A survey was taken of those who attended the service on Sunday, May 23, and everyone responded favorably to the above, so we will begin offering the option of removing your mask and singing. Reinstating Lemonade on the Lawn, with restrictions, is under consideration. Please note that fully vaccinated means 2 weeks after your 2nd shot of Pfizer or Moderna, or 2 weeks after the J&J. We can not ask you if you are vaccinated, but are relying on the honor system. We are still continuing with the social distancing at this time, as well as the health check in at the door. Attendance has been running just over 40 most Sundays, so beginning in June, you no longer need to let us know if you plan to come to the service. One 10 am service will continue until further notice. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we navigate the changes. (More information on page 8)

One of three significant Jewish festivals, Pentecost is the Greek name for Festival of Weeks, a prominent feast in the Jewish calendar that celebrated God giving them the Ten Commandments fifty days after the Exodus from Egypt. God instructed His people to celebrate the Festival of Weeks, which was to be held 7 full weeks (49 days) and one day after Passover. Also called the Feast of Harvest, this was when Jews would present their first fruits of their Spring crops. Jewish law required all Jewish men to come to Jerusalem from wherever they were living to personally be in attendance for the celebration. This is the context in which Acts 2 begins, saying “When the day of Pentecost came… there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven… Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pont, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, Libya and Rome, Cretans and Arabs”. When the Holy Spirit arrived on the Day of Pentecost, it was to symbolize that it was the new first fruit of God’s spiritual harvest to come, the second coming of Jesus and redemption of His church. The Holy Spirit came upon the followers of Jesus with flames of fire and violent winds. This enabled them to speak in many languages to the large, multinational crowd. The significance of Pentecost is the expansion of God’s church beyond the Chosen People, to include all people, of all nations. We can share our faith with others in most places on Earth without fear of reprisal. God bless those who spread God’s Word in those locales that are hostile to Christians. May the Holy Spirit be with them. A blessing from God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
FUMC Secondary School Graduates Graduation is a big deal at any level; the following FUMC children have completed the specified grade level and are moving forward in their educational pursuit. We congratulate them all on their current success and wish them all the best in their next level of education. Keep up the amazing work!! Visit the website at fincastlepreschool@yahoo.com Music Program Activities by Kerry Campbell Members of the congregation may not know how much our buildings are used for our various music programs. As announced at the Sunday May 30th service: Wednesdays at 5 pm, Botetourt Ensem- ble and Mary, rehearse. Also on Wednesdays, the Bell Choir and Brooke rehearse at 7 pm in the FLC. On second and fourth Wednesdays of each month Brooke and Mary rehearse in sanctuary. On Tuesdays at 4 PM Kate Graff (clarinet) and Mary rehearse in Sanctuary. This is on top of the typical Wednesday usage for Choir practice and the eight hours of any given week when Mary is likely to be rehearsing organ and piano. Our musicians work hard and the quality of our program is proof of the value of their efforts, we thank them for that!!
A Message from The Pastor More than a year after the pandemic began, our church has reopened and masks have become optional, while social distancing is still maintained. I am grateful to the leaders and volunteers of the Church who prayed for and oversaw safety measures. I am also grateful to all congregants for their cooperation. It has been good to see our congregation work hard to gather together, pray for worship, and serve, whether they did so in-person or virtually. Thank you for actively serving the community through the Blessings Box, Backpack Buddy, and other ways throughout the pandemic. Our church has children, youth, and young adults who are the next generation. During the pandemic, they worked hard to study. Among them, there are students graduating from elementary, middle school, high school, and college. Their parents and other congregants have prayed for and supported them so that they could grow as God's children. I encourage you to continue to pray that they will experience God's love and guidance on their journey, and that they will be prepared and be used as disciples of the Lord. How exciting it is to visualize the future in which the love and grace of Jesus Christ will be witnessed to the world through these students! Summer vacation season is approaching! I hope that by taking the rest which God has allowed us, we slow our pace and look around, so that we can see and feel how God has been working for us. The pastor will ask church members to participate in this group to decide how we as a church move forward in ministry and how best to restart and move forward with church activities. This is not meant to be just health and safety proto- cols, but also will address our ministries and missions. Therefore, as soon as the pastor has assembled a PRG we as the HCT will no longer be active. That is not to say that some or all of you may be asked to continue on the PRG. The PRG will develop protocols and plans going forward, submit the plan to the church council, and the pastor will send it to the DS for review. We will have much more say in what we feel is safe and minimizes risk. I wish to thank those who have served on the HCT, Paul Tucker, Pat Kagey, Fern Robertson, Ken Boggs, Betty Reynolds, and Pastor Kwang. Things are changing quickly for the better, and we pray that continues. USE OF FAMILY LIFE CENTER The HCT has developed a plan for limited use of the lower level of the FLC by outside groups. Use will be limited to once per week to allow the contract cleaners to work. A group must have a church sponsor who will see that the guidelines for use are followed. We have developed a form for you to use with the guide- lines, which will be available in the church office. Sunday School and other church groups can use the FLC lower level for meetings. Please continue to use social distancing and keep a record of those who attended. Remember to note affirmative answers to the health questions. We are still not doing any food service at this time. The PRG will be developing guidance on that soon. Stay tuned! These plans were approved by the church council at its May meeting and submitted to the DS, who has also given his approval.
