Pastor’s Pause September 2021 It seems to me this summer was both very short and very long. At the beginning of June, as most of the parish is very well aware, I became rather ill and so began an offer from the Congregation Council and Bishop Collins to allow for a two-month recovery time. I gratefully accepted the offer. As days passed while I slept and milled about the house for the first few weeks, I heard and watched school buses continue to carry children well into the end of June. I thanked God my own children had graduated earlier the same month because I just didn’t have the will or the desire to go through another school year. When I did come out of my cocoon and it seemed I was able to walk without falling over from remnants of the current illness, nor of the chronic illness I’m dealing with, then I didn’t see children outside, but rather saw many hurried travelers leaving for vacations. It seemed we barely ended July 4 celebrations when the practice plans began for sports. Just another two weeks passed by and the practice fields began to be used again. I talked with some folks about their plans for the rest of summer, only to find that for most the summer had ended with the page turn to August. I even began to see decorations for fall on lawns and I thought, ‘Please, God. Not yet.’ After ten years of ministry, after thirty years of being in the workplace, I still wonder and marvel at how the human mind chooses busyness over joy. I had such a tremendous gift this summer…I saw the ebb and flow of blue jays, robins, cardinals, and red-winged black birds in our neighborhood; witnessed the changes in other people’s gardens; saw trees bend with storms; breathed in fresh air from rain-filled storms; and, more. For the first time in many, many years, I actually enjoyed time with my family – no need to rush off to work, to this thing or that thing. The gift I received this summer was the gift of just “being.” I also had many hours to be in conversation with Christ, to pray, to meditate. Those quiet times weren’t spent in some special place with a home altar or anything like it. Instead, the forest, the back yard, the open field… these were places of being at peace with the Lord. The note upon which this summer is ending for me, as I listen to how very busy parents are and I understand why I’m not seeing them or the children of the church as much as a few years ago, is that of hope. I hope you all have the chance to slow down a bit so that you, also, have the experience, even for just a few hours a week, of listening to bird song, of talking with Christ, of enjoying your church family – of “being” at peace. -Pastor Hahn
