Join us in celebrating: 4-H Professionals Appreciation Day on Friday, Feb 5, 4-H Volunteer Appreciation Day on Friday, Feb. 12, 4-H Spirit Day on Friday, Feb. 19, and 4-H Sponsor & Donor Appreciation Day on Friday, Feb. 26. Market Beef Weigh-In This will be held on Sunday, February 7, from 2:00-4:00pm at Tri-State Livestock. All market beef must be weighed in on this day in order to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest. Optional: Dr. Jamie Kotschwar will be available to tattoo breeding heifers and do BVD testing on State Fair and Aksarben nominated animals if you would like to have it done that day. 2021 4-H Enrollment All 4-H members and volunteers must enroll each year. Please go to ne.4honline.com to complete the process. June 15 is the statewide enrollment deadline; however, we would appreciate it if you could complete it as soon as possible so we can keep you updated on the program. If you were enrolled last year, simply follow the Returning 4-H Member instructions you will see on the homepage. Once you are in your family profile, click on Edit next to each child’s name, go through each page updating the information as necessary and adding the projects they want to enroll in. Do this until you reach Submit Enrollment. You are not enrolled until you click on Submit Enrollment. If you were not enrolled last year, go to ne.4honline.com and follow the New 4-H Member instructions. New enrollments must also complete all required information including projects for fair and click Submit Enrollment. The Health Form information is optional and does not have to be completed in order to enroll. Please call the Extension Office with any questions. When enrolling in 4HOnline please make sure you complete the following: 1. T-shirt size for all 4-H members 2. Grade each 4-H member is enrolled in for the 2020-2021 school year
4-H T-Shirts We will be using the same t-shirt as last year. If you need replacements or different sizes, contact the office. 4-H Club Meetings The Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department has decided to follow the Governor's Covid-19 risk assessment for the state which is based on the number of individuals in hospitals statewide. Currently, the statewide risk dial is blue. If you are holding club meetings, please follow these guidelines at a minimum: post signs, maintain 6-foot physical distancing, frequent sanitation, self-monitoring, minimize the duration of the meeting, refrain from serving food and document participant contact information. 4-H Council The January meeting was postponed until February 2 at 7:00pm in the 4-H Building Meeting Room to allow for more social distancing. 2021 Red Willow County Fair The fair dates have been set for July 21-25, 2021 Avian Influenza The Nebraska Poultry Industries in consultation with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture would like all poultry owners to be aware that Avian Influenza is of great concern this year. It is active in several countries and is easily carried around the world by migrating birds. They recommend following the guidelines at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/avian/defend-the-flock- program/defend-the-flock-program to keep your flock safe. 2021 Special Garden Project The Special Garden Project is a way to offer 4-H members the chance to grow unusual and fun projects in their gardens. The 2021 Special Garden Project is focused on the tasty Hakurei Turnip. These are not your grandmother’s turnips. Hakurei is a white salad turnip that is smooth, round and at its best when harvested under 2”. The roots can be eaten raw or cooked and the tops can also be cooked. Thank you to all who notified the Extension Office that you intend to participate in this project. We will let you know when the seeds arrive. Make sure you enroll for the Special Garden Project through 4-H Online. By enrolling through 4-H Online, you will have access to a OneDrive folder with educational materials including the growing newsletter & evaluation. If you missed the seed deadline, but would still like to participate, please call the Extension Office. We will have seeds for a few more people on a first come first served basis. Livestock Skill-A-Thon Lauren Miller has volunteered to help 4-H youth interested in participating in the Livestock Skill-A-Thon contest prepare for this event. Livestock Skill-A-Thon is an event where participants demonstrate their knowledge of the livestock industry in a team setting answering questions in areas that may include topics in the following areas: Meats-Breed and/or equipment identification and uses-Breeding scenario problem-Animal evaluation and/or marketing problem-Quality Assurance-Feed identification and use and/or feeding/performance problem. This team event is held in Lincoln June 28, 2021 in Lincoln. If interested in participating, please call the office at 345-3390 so we can notify you when practice sessions will begin. “Sew” Much Fabric The 4-H program has graciously been donated a large amount of quilting fabric. If you have a project you would like to start or want to complete, please come into the office, and look through what we have. Most of the pieces we have are in quantities that would be sufficient to complete a project. This fabric is available at no cost to you all we ask is that you do complete a project with it.
Hippology Academy 2021 This is an online, course designed for youth, adults, leaders, and extension personnel to gain knowledge and practice on horse hippology content. Content includes practice tests, slides, digital stations and twice weekly lectures in six content areas. Participants can interact with equine professors from universities across the United States. New lessons will be available starting on Mondays for 6 weeks starting February 8. Once available, all content will be accessible 24/7 for the duration of your subscription! Topics covered will be: Equipment and Riding Styles, Stallion Reproductive Anatomy, External Parasites, Pasture Management, Donkeys and Equine Breeds. This course is targeted for older youth and adults. Subscription levels: Bronze Level = $50. Access to content until August 8 or Silver Level = $100. Includes 6-week access to instructors to ask questions and access to content until November 8. If you are a Silver level subscriber, each week, the Professor of the Week who provided the material will be available to answer questions on their topic. You are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to 'pick the brains' of these national experts. You can upgrade from Bronze to Silver at any time. Registration here: https://campus.extension.org/course/search.php?search=hippology Virtual Horse Judging Camp 2021 This is an online horse judging camp for anyone thinking about giving horse judging a try. The camp includes at-home assignments, reasons critique, 4 interactive virtual meetings, quizzes, and certificate of completion. This camp is for anyone who may be thinking about being on or coaching a Horse Judging team. Each session will have an assignment, live presentations, discussion of the class and class/runs to practice on and critiques. Also, there is an in-depth session on oral reasons presented by the Oklahoma State World Champion Horse Judging team. Presenters include: Dr. Steven Cooper, Oklahoma State University Judging team coach; Taylor Fabus, Michigan State Horse Judging team coach; Dr. Kathy Anderson, University of Nebraska Judging team coach. Topics/classes covered include: Note-taking and reasons, Halter, Horsemanship, Ranch Riding, and Oral reasons with feedback. Dates are February 16, 18, 23 and 25 at 5 - 6:30pm Central time. The fee for this course is $30. To purchase and enroll go to: https://campus.extension.org/course/search.php?search=horse+judging+camp Animal Science: Inspiring Your Future Scholarship Contest This is the inaugural year for the Animal Science: Inspiring Your Future Scholarship Contest and ten $5000 scholarships will be awarded. They want students to tell their digital story about an individual or animal who has inspired them to pursue an education and career in animal science. This can be done via video, essay, pictures, a combination of those things, or really any medium that allows them to comfortably express themselves. More details can be found at: https://animalscience.unl.edu/Inspiring-Your-Future-Scholarship-Competition UNL Animal Science Open House The Department of Animal Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be hosting their Animal Science Open House on February 25th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. This is a great event for students to get to campus, if they haven’t done so already or want to take another look at the opportunities available to them as an animal science major. The goal is to have a wide variety of areas highlighted throughout the facility, so participants are able to see the facility and learn more about the different areas of animal science. In the past they have had demonstrations from the Husker Equestrian Team and livestock and horse judging teams along with stations set up educating participants more about animal nutrition, reproduction, meat science, poultry science, and anatomy, among others. Faculty, staff, and current students will be on hand to answer questions and visit with the guests. They will be following social distancing and University safety guidelines at this event and an RSVP is required for all guests. Once guests RSVP they will receive a confirmation email with parking details, COVID-19 safety precautions, and any other pertinent details. RSVP at go.unl.edu/asciopenhouse2021. The event will take place directly following the CASNR Experience the Power of Red Visit Day which ends at 12:30 p.m. Hastings Museum Pen Pal Program Does your mail make you smile? The Hastings Museum believes that it should, and so does 4-H! The Red Willow County Extension Office is helping spread the word about the Hastings Museum Pen Pal Program. This would be a great way to spruce up your snail mail and make someone else’s day. We also believe there could be a 4-H exhibit or two in the future based on this project. 4-H Civic Engagement Ideas 4-H empowers young people to be true leaders. True Leaders are people who have confidence, will stick to a job until it gets done, and can endure through challenges. Communities across Nebraska need true leaders now more than ever. 4-H volunteers and youth across Nebraska may be looking for ideas about how they can become civically engaged, all while abiding by the guidelines shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
