Reflection Corner Home Theologian and storyteller Megan McKenna recounts the tale of a blacksmith who was revered in his village for his hard work, skill and generosity. The day came for him to die, and so God sent his angel to accompany the man’s soul to the place prepared for him in heaven. But the man said to the angel, “Please, let me stay for a li le while longer. It was me for the year’s plan ng, and my neighbors need me.” The angel agreed. A few months later, the angel returned to bring the humble blacksmith to God’s dwelling place. The blacksmith said, “I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but could I stay a li le longer? A neighbor of mine is seriously ill, and it’s me for the harvest. A number of us are trying to save his crop so his family won’t be des tute.” Again the angel agreed to ask God for more me. And so it went: the angel would come to bring the blacksmith to God, but the blacksmith would ask for more me, that he was s ll needed in his village. And the angel would agree. A er many years, the blacksmith grew old and weary. It was me, he realized, and so he prayed: “God, if you’d like to send your angel again, I’d be glad to come home now.” God’s angel appeared to the blacksmith. “If you s ll want to take me home, I’m ready to go to God’s kingdom.” But the angel laughed and, with delight and surprise, said to him, “Where do you think you’ve been all these years?” The blacksmith was already home. [From Parables: The Arrows of God by Megan McKenna.] Throughout the Gospel, Jesus challenges our o en-illusory, distorted rela onships with such things as money, food, technology and fashion at the expense of the important rela onships we have with family and friends — and God. The blacksmith has discovered the true blessings of life that enable him to find “God’s home” in his present life. Jesus challenges his disciples to detach from the ephemeral and shallow in order to a ach to the las ng, fulfilling things of God. In embracing the spirit of God’s compassion and mercy, we can transform our me and place into the me and place of God.
4 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time THE CROSS OF JESUS The percep on of a cross changed drama cally a er Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over me, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their Today’s Readings associa on with it. Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the early years of the church, most people never availed themselves of once-in-a-life me penance. Yet penitents were highly visible. They wore dis nc ve garments or chains, and they were relegated to special zones in the church. They might be dismissed from the Sunday assembly a er the Word, forbidden to join in the Prayer of the Faithful or the Eucharist. This dismissal was done with great affec on and tenderness as the bishop laid his hands on the heads of the sinners. During Lent almost everyone would iden fy with penitents by clothing, insignia, or by following the penitents’ regular diet. Rather than sit in judgment over them, the church desired to intercede for them before the Lord. “Let Mother Church weep for you and wash away your sins with her tears,” said St. Ambrose to his penitents in Milan. Ambrose liked to think of them as Jonah in the whale, medita ng on his errors. In a le er to his sister he said that Jonah is also a sign of Christ in the tomb, and so he had great faith in the penitents’ future proclama on of the Resurrec on with their reclaimed status in the assembly.
