June 2021 ST. PAUL the APOSTLE Burlington, Ontario COUNCIL 17397 NEWS Instituted January 25, 2020 http://kofc17397.org Volume 1, Issue 13 June 2021 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN My Brother Knights, The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The timing of the feast of the Sacred Heart depends on Easter but is celebrated the Friday after Corpus Christi Sunday. This year it is June 11. In the opening prayer for the Solemnity we hear, “O God, who in the heart of your Son, wounded by our sins, bestow on us in mercy the boundless treasures of your love, grant, we pray, that, in paying him the homage of our devotion, we may also offer worthy reparation.” The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us of the deep love of God for us. God is wounded for us; his heart is pierced for love of us. And our response to this love is reparation. Every time we love in a sacrificial way, we console the heart of Jesus; the world comes to know what the love of God is really like and the dark power of sin is defeated. As men of faith we need to strive to make this love real in our families. As Jesus says, “There is no greater love than lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” As we gaze upon the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus may we call for that grace to lay down our lives for those who are most dear to us. The Feast Day of the Sacred Heart is also a special day of prayer for priests. For Father John and me the month of June will be tied up with the details of making a move to a new assignment. So please pray for your priests so that we will live our lives as witnesses to the Lord Jesus, fully devoted to His Most Sacred Heart. Vivat Jesus, Father Ed -1- 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington, ON L7M 4E2
June 2021 GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Dear brothers Knights of St Paul’s, I hope each of you and your loved ones are keeping well and safe. At the May general council meeting, elections were held for the upcoming fraternal year. Unlike last year, there were no ballots to be cast as the officers were acclaimed to their posts. Congratulations to Grand Knight elect Bernie Moorcroft, and all the brothers who will lead our council in the next fraternal year. A big thank you to our election chair, worthy Financial Secretary Greg Huckle. There is a good mix of new and current officers making up the council executive. Thank you and well done, to all the outgoing officers. It is my belief; a vibrant council needs a rotation every two years of officers to enable brothers to experience and lead as officers. This not only helps more brothers to lead but helps with engagement and succession planning. The transition begins. May we always remember our former worthy Advocate Sir Knight Rob Castonguay PKG. His guidance during our first three meetings set our council rolling. Brother Rob Rest in Peace. I feel blessed and thank you all for entrusting me to lead our council over the past year and three quarters. There were many brothers who were instrumental in helping to set the foundation to build on. Thank you to our worthy Chaplain Fr. Ed for his support in starting up the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul’s. As our worthy Chaplain, he has not missed a meeting and his chaplain’s messages at meetings provide reflection and guidance. Also, a shout out to br. Frank Miele who sowed the seeds for the council. We worked through the Covid pandemic and adapted to remote meetings. But through it all we kept moving forward succeeding with many small and big milestones. Our council is strong and growing. Financially sound and achieving great successes. Together we chose the five organizations to support from our fundraising. Also, the programs supported like Special Olympics and Halton Alive. We have full support from our St. Paul parishioners and the many ministries and committees at St. Paul’s. The Key to the success was brothers working as a collaborative team, pitching in and working out our disagreements amicably and democratically. Brother Knights who were recently Knighted are participating and getting involved. Brothers, well done and keep it up. Brothers, we are ending the fraternal year strong. Our Council has been awarded the Columbian Award, to go with the four other awards. We are set to win the Star Council. To brothers who were unable to attend online meetings, your feedback via email or call was greatly appreciated. I take the opportunity to wish all the Fathers, a Happy Father’s day. We remember those Fathers who have returned to their heavenly abode. Please continue to pray for the needs of our council members. My prayer for each of you to always be blessed with our Lord’s blessings to provide the health, guidance, wisdom, and protection to each of you and your families. Vivat Jesus. June 2021 Support Shifra Homes In pre-pandemic times we would be in the midst of Shifra Homes baby bottle campaign – an annual campaign which starts on Mother’s Day. However, for the past two years, the churches have been closed due to provincial restrictions, and the baby bottle campaign, which brings in a significant amount of revenue for Shifra Homes, had to be cancelled. Per Burlington MPP Jane McKenna: “Shifra Homes has provided a safe haven where young women who are expecting a child can live without stress and fear… they provide hope and building blocks for putting together a new life with baby for these young mothers.” Shifra Homes has a special connection to St. Paul’s parish. Our former deacon, Randy Matters, founded Shifra Homes in 2012 and is the current president of the board. While there are no baby bottles this year to fill with our spare change, please consider instead an online donation to support this charity which embodies our pro-life values. www.shifrahomes.com (Shifra Homes website recognizes the Knights of Columbus as a major sponsor.) -7- 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington, ON L7M 4E2
June 2021 MESSAGE FROM FIELD AGENT Brother Knights Spring is here, we have a new season and after a blessed Easter and a beautiful Eastertide, it's time to start planning again. With spring and some break in the weather, I've started to put together my honey-do list that will take me outside into the sunshine…at least I hope it's going to be sunny when I get outdoors to do all these chores. I don't know about you, but this time of year seems to energize me. After being cooped up all winter, and this year really being cooped up, I've been able to think of all the things I need to get done. Some of that includes physical repairs around the house, getting the lawn and flowerbeds ready to go, maybe even washing some windows. I've had some estimates for work I need done around the house. Every craftsman has told me their business is booming. So many people have noticed things that need to be done around the house since they've been inside for the better part of a year. And as you sit around and consider all the things that you need to get updated, let me make a suggestion that may put your mind and your family's mind at ease. We know this year has been unpredictable in many ways, but let’s be honest, pandemic or not, life is unpredictable. We can’t see what the future will bring, but we can plan for the unexpected. Remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus I am your partner on your journey to prepare for and face the unpredictable. Just as we take stock of the physical changes that need to be considered, I'd suggest that you take stock of where you stand protecting your family. The Knights of Columbus has partnered with industry leader Advicent to help us help you. I can use Advicent’s state-of-the-art software to provide you with a comprehensive financial needs analysis. With it I can help you take stock of where you are today, where you want to go, and how close you are to achieving your goals. I can help you identify any gaps in your coverage or issues you should address. This will give you a comprehensive look at where you stand. While many other companies charge for this kind of service, the Order has invested in this software to help us agents help our members. This financial needs analysis is free of charge as a fraternal benefit of membership. I feel I have a special bond of brotherhood with all my members and I am committed to helping protect Catholic families…your family…while furthering the vision of Blessed Michael McGivney. Please take time to meet with me and take advantage of this free benefit of membership. Vivat Jesu! Fraternally Aldrin DCunha -8- 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington, ON L7M 4E2

June 2021 Catholic Civics Workshop: Using money like a Catholic Join us on Wednesday, June 30th at 7:00 PM EST for a discussion on the uses and abuses of money. We'll be interviewing Michael Ryall, Professor of Strategy Management at the Rotman School of Management, and Paul Perrone, a Chartered Financial Analyst and experienced investment industry professional. Registration is available here. The use of money is a social act, with profound moral effects on the lives of our families and our wider communities. How we spend, save, or use our money is one way we influence the culture and the world around us—especially in a market economy. To that end, this webinar will look at the application of Catholic social teaching principles to the ways we spend our money. The idea is to encourage people to think about money as an act of community, and something that can be usefully informed by the wisdom and truth of our Catholic faith. We will look at this through twin but complimentary lenses—both the personal use of money, and the use of money in an organizational or social context. PAUL PERRONE Paul Perrone holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a registered Portfolio Manager with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada. He has over 21 years experience in the Investment Industry. As part of a team, Paul directly managed over $1 Billion in client funds for the national investment arm of a chartered Canadian bank. MICHAEL RYALL Michael Ryall is a Professor of Strategy Management at the Rotman School of Business, at the University of Toronto. As an economist trained in game theory, his primary research interest is the formal theoretical foundations of business strategy. This is a small but rapidly growing research area that uses mathematical models to analyze issues relating to firm performance under competition, organizational learning, and social networks. More recently, his interests have extended into philosophy, with a focus on social ontology and business ethics. His research has been published in the Academy of Management Review, Management Science and The B.E. Journal of Theoretical Economics, among others." - 11 - 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington, ON L7M 4E2

June 2021 Today My life is a gift of God given, not in years, but a day at a time. Today is the day the Lord has made for me, and He planned it to be the most important day of my life. Yesterday is gone, never to return. I must not worry about it, but leave it in the hands of God. Tomorrow and all that it holds is God’s secret and its coming is not assured. Only today is mine. Each day, arranged by God with infinite wisdom and goodness is His gift, His act of love for me. In Thanksgiving I will offer him every day the gift of myself – my prayers, works, joys and sufferings. Dear Lord, receive it graciously. - Anonymous - 13 - 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington, ON L7M 4E2
