REFLECTION: MY DAD AND THE MOST HOLY TRINITY KARIE FERRELL, DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 234) As Catholics we mark ourselves with the sign of the cross as we begin all things, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” “Through the centuries, saints and artists have helped us to understand the Holy Trinity … St. Patrick is said to have explained the Trinity to the people of Ireland by showing them a shamrock, with its three leaves on one stem. St. Ignatius Loyola compared the Trinity to a chord played on an instrument: three distinct notes forming one sound.” (2019 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays, Liturgy Training Publications) On this Trinity Sunday that is also Father’s Day, I think about fathers, especially my own, as I think about God and this core belief of our faith. John Pershing Ferrell, born in 1919, died in 1997, was my father, companion and the spirit that enlivened my life. He and my mother brought me home from an adoption agency when I was thirty days old and from the first moment he made sure that all kinds of things were available to me through which I could learn about the world: music, books, art, a home to shelter me that was always full of friends, family and neighbors, food to nourish me, etc. He was also the companion that showed me how to live, teaching me through stories, jokes, by example, and through his never-ending questions that made me clarify my thoughts as I made his teachings my own. His spirit is the spirit that inspires me with excitement, curiosity, and love for him and for the world and its people. On this Father’s Day I say a prayer of thanks, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Page 4 www.stmaryevanston.org
