Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival Thursday 17 June – Saturday 26 June 2021 The Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival is an annual event that encourages a love of reading and literature, storytelling, celebrates creativity and diversity, and promotes lifelong learning. Brimbank City Council is delighted to present the 2021 program, which sees partnered events with Principal Sponsor Victoria University Polytechnic as well as Creative Brimbank, local writers and community groups. Uncle Jack Charles ning Night in Conversation Ope Thursday 17 June, 6-8pm Join us for an evening with one of Australia’s most treasured actors, author and Aboriginal Elder Uncle Jack Charles. From stage and screen actor to cat burglar, musician, heroin addict and activist, Uncle Jack has worn many hats throughout his life. Uncle Jack is a member of the Stolen Generation. Raised away from family, the loneliness and isolation he experienced during those years had a devastating impact on him that endured long after he reconnected with his Aboriginal roots. Jack Charles: Born- again Blakfella, his candid and uplifting memoir, is both heartbreaking and hilarious. Uncle Jack speaks about his remarkable life with writer, freelance journalist and former segment presenter on ABC radio, Paul Bateman. Paul’s writing has been published in a variety of newspapers, magazines, websites and specialist publications — including The Age. South Sudanese Manhood and or Authk Family Crisis in the Diaspora tal Saturday with 19 June, 4-5pm Akuch Anyieth Friday 18 June, 6pm Join author, graduate researcher and PhD candidate Akuch Anyieth, for a discussion on her new book about the issues facing South Sudanese families in the diaspora. Akuch’s unique position as a South Sudanese woman adds a new voice to existing literature in family violence and South Sudanese history. South Sudanese Manhood and Family Crisis in the Diaspora illuminates the past, critiques the present and offers an unequalled vision for the way forward into the future. Panel discussion facilitated by Marcia Ferguson, creative producer, speaker, mentor and teacher. Jennifer Tran uses conversations around cooking, food and recipes to create bonds between senior women, their families and communities, embarking on projects including Teta’s Kitchen, a sculptural garden, and Mama’s Kitchen. Katherine Gailer [AKA Katira] is a Colombian muralist, performer and visual artist currently working in Australia, composing imaginary landscapes and characters that define cultural identity in the space of magical realism. Jessica Wilson creates unique experiences including Child Nation, a set of digitally prompted journeys which guide kids to turn their environments — and their adults — into subversive art projects. Below The Surface – When Black Panel ev nt e Meets White Lydia Tesema, Ivy Mutuku, Noah DaCosta, Winniy Manyang and Abdul Yusuf Sunday 20 June, 3-4pm The second magazine from ‘Below the Surface’, When Black Meets White explored identity, race-relations and lived experiences at the height of the Black Lives Matter movements. It prompted 12 African-heritage Australians from the Victorian community to unpack what happens when they exist and function in predominantly white spaces. Join us for a thought provoking panel discussion facilitated by Lydia Tesema with young Melbourne writers and creatives, Ivy Mutuku, Noah DaCosta, Winniy Manyang and Abdul Yusuf. Lydia is an Australian-born, Ethiopian radio presenter, host, multidisciplinary creative, community developer, founder and editor of Below The Surface magazine. Ivy is a Kenyan born, Melbourne photographer and filmmaker with a fire for visual storytelling. Noah is a radio presenter, videographer, writer and creator of the platform Bourne & Bred. Winniy is a South Sudanese-Australian woman, who migrated to Australia as a child and now works as a community support worker, youth advocate and model/ content creator. Abdul is a Somali born, Melbourne cinematographer and photographer, shooting street photography and portraiture, as well as emerging artists from the African diaspora. Queer Writing Workshop: Life Work Stories & Rainbow Collections shop with Sam Elkin Tuesday 22 June, 5.30-7.30pm Everybody has an interesting story to tell, so why not tell yours? Join writer and radio maker, Sam Elkin for an engaging workshop to discuss the fundamentals of life writing, gain tips to access your memories and bring the details of your experiences to life. This hands-on workshop will be followed by a chat about how libraries can bring the world to your doorstep. Sam will discuss his favourite books, and all the ways that you can access similar titles across Brimbank Libraries. Suitable for young adults. Join Natalie Kon-Yu and guests for a lively and informative discussion about writing courses and groups, competitions, agents and publishing. Natalie Kon-Yu is a writer and academic at Victoria University. She is a commissioning editor of three books about women’s untold stories, and her non-fiction book A Delicate Condition will be published by Affirm Press in 2022. Enza Gandolfo is a Melbourne writer and author of two novels, Swimming and The Bridge. Sherryl Clark has published more than 70 children’s and young adult books as well as two crime novels for adult readers. Sunshine in Winter – Microfiction Competition ompetition C with Richard Holt 17 May - 17 June Are you a writer or aspiring writer who lives, works, studies or plays in Brimbank? We would love to read and celebrate your work! Submit a bite-sized piece of microfiction of up to 200 words inspired by ‘Sunshine in Winter’. Each entry will be in the running for $500 in prizes, including a $250 book voucher for first prize! Richard Holt, writer of microfiction and short stories, will judge entries. For ages 18 and over. Lost Words Work shop with Julianne Negri Saturday 26 June, 2-3pm Do you know what a ‘throttlebottom’ is? A ‘snollygoster’? Join Julianne Negri for a writing and wordplay workshop and celebrate the joy of words lost and found. Julianne is a writer, musician, eco-crafter, film maker and television host. Julianne’s debut children’s novel, The Secret Library of Hummingbird House, is a notable book in the Young Readers category for this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards. Jim’s debut novel Nikolai the Perfect was published in February this year and was runner-up (to Jane Harper for The Dry), in the 2015 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Unpublished Manuscript. Set in Moscow and Melbourne, the novel explores the fractured relationship between father and son, husband and wife, devastating loss, upheaval, secrets and forbearance. Work Make Your Own Comics shop Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Brimbank Saturday 26 June, 1.30-2.30pm Join Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Brimbank contributor and local artist, Lily Nguyen for this hands-on workshop about telling stories through cartooning. The Make Your Own Comics workshop will offer a space where young people can illustrate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings in a short comic. This workshop would encourage young people’s participation to build on a story to then pair with a drawing or picture to complete a 6-panel comic. Everyone has an interesting story to tell, join Lily to learn how to tell yours. Ages 12-30. Sydenham Library: 9249 4296 1 Station Street, Taylors Lakes Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Book h Brimbank - Book Launch launc Saturday 26 June, 3-4pm Join us for the book launch of Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Brimbank, a community project to document the pandemic in the local area. The book contains submissions from community members of all ages, highlighting the impact of the pandemic on daily life. Discover unique stories and reflections from diverse cultural groups and identities in Brimbank, drawing on shared experiences of 2020.
