Thursday 17 June, 6-8pm

Join us for an evening with one of Australia’s most treasured
actors, author and Aboriginal Elder Uncle Jack Charles.
From stage and screen actor to cat burglar, musician,
heroin addict and activist, Uncle Jack has worn many hats
throughout his life. Uncle Jack is a member of the Stolen
Generation. Raised away from family, the loneliness
and isolation he experienced during those years had a
devastating impact on him that endured long after he
reconnected with his Aboriginal roots. Jack Charles: Born-
again Blakfella, his candid and uplifting memoir, is both
heartbreaking and hilarious. Uncle Jack speaks about his
remarkable life with writer, freelance journalist and former
segment presenter on ABC radio, Paul Bateman. Paul’s
writing has been published in a variety of newspapers,
magazines, websites and specialist publications — including
                 The Age.

Akuch Anyieth, for a discussion on her new book
about the issues facing South Sudanese families
in the diaspora. Akuch’s unique position as a South
Sudanese woman adds a new voice to existing
literature in family violence and South Sudanese
history. South Sudanese Manhood and Family Crisis

Saturday 19 June, 3–4pm

Hear local artists Jennifer Tran, Katherine Gailer and Jessica Wilson discuss how
conversation, story-telling, and the sharing of identities, shapes and informs their artworks.
Panel discussion facilitated by Marcia Ferguson, creative producer, speaker, mentor
and teacher. Jennifer Tran uses conversations around cooking, food and recipes to
create bonds between senior women, their families and communities, embarking
on projects including Teta’s Kitchen, a sculptural garden, and Mama’s Kitchen.
Katherine Gailer [AKA Katira] is a Colombian muralist, performer and visual artist
currently working in Australia, composing imaginary landscapes and characters that
define cultural identity in the space of magical realism. Jessica Wilson creates unique
experiences including Child Nation, a set of digitally prompted journeys which guide
kids to turn their environments — and their adults — into subversive art projects.

Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Brimbank
Saturday 26 June, 1.30-2.30pm

Join Riding the COVID-19 Wave in Brimbank contributor and
local artist, Lily Nguyen for this hands-on workshop about
telling stories through cartooning. The Make Your Own
Comics workshop will offer a space where young people can
illustrate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings in a short comic.
This workshop would encourage young people’s participation
to build on a story to then pair with a drawing or picture to
complete a 6-panel comic. Everyone has an interesting story
to tell, join Lily to learn how to tell yours. Ages 12-30.
