Written Saturday 20 March 2pm & 8pm by Tim Finn and Tahitian writer Célestine Hitiura Vaite, this dramatic TERRY SPRAGG new work is based on the ultimately tragic relationship between Manukau Symphony Chairperson Tahitian star navigator Tupaia and Lieutenant James Cook on the HOUSTOUN PLAYS Endeavour’s maiden voyage. MSO is delighted to collaborate with THE EGYPTIAN NZ Opera, Auckland Choral and the Graduate Choir New Zealand for three performances in March 2021. DAVIES Director PAUL WHELAN as James Cook NATASHA WILSON as Purea TBC as Tupaia TBC as Teata CÉLESTINE HITIURA VAITE as Monologist CÉLESTINE HITIURA VAITE Monologist Aboard a cramped British scientific vessel in the vastness of the Pacific, two navigators find themselves locked on a collision course. One is a Tahitian priest, guided by his ancient knowledge of star pathways. The other a naval officer, desperate to prove both himself and his faith in science. This beautiful and haunting new work by composer Tim Finn with Tahitian monologues by Célestine Hitiura Vaite tells the story of Tupaia, the Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook, on the maiden voyage of the Endeavour in 1769. Ihitai ‘Avei’a - Star Navigator explores the relationship between two master mariners, each from vastly different worlds, both far from home and unable to find their way into each other’s world. The production is sung in English and Tahitian with English surtitles. 90 minute duration. Additional lyrics by Gary Henderson. 2 3
HOUSTOUN PLAYS THE EGYPTIAN Sunday 2 may 5pm BEETHOVEN Name Day Overture MOZART Symphony No.40 OFFENBACH La Vie Parisienne Overture SAINT-SAëNS The Egyptian Piano Concert UWE GRODD Conductor michael houstoun piano Originally programmed for Beethoven's 250th Anniversary, the Name Day Overture is a 'Happy Birthday' song! We look forward to presenting Mozart’s wonderful G minor Symphony - an emotional work, full of melodic UWE GRODD writing of surpassing beauty, which rightly deserves to be called the ‘crown’ of Mozart’s symphonies. This is followed by Offenbach’s overture to La Vie Parisienne – a celebration of all things Parisian. We invite you to dance to the gaiety and joie de vivre of this fun work. MICHAEL HOUSTOUN Finally, New Zealand’s one and only Michael Houstoun will perform one of his favourite concertos - Saint-Saȅns’ remarkable Egyptian Piano Concerto! A keen traveller, Saint-Saȅns wrote this dazzling concerto while in Luxor, the sunny Egyptian city of famous temples. An exotic work, it is full of Javanese, Spanish and middle-Eastern influences – a musical “sea voyage” in Saint-Saȅns’ words. How wonderful that Michael has chosen to perform this at Manukau! 4 5
BRAHMS 4 BRAHMS 4 saturday 3 july 7.30pm DAVID HAMILTON (NZ) Fanfare for Matariki BEETHOVEN piano Concerto No. 3 BRAHMS Symphony No. 4 UWE GRODD Conductor henry wong doe piano Brahms’ fourth and last Symphony in E minor was written in 1885. The character of the minor key pervades the work, with an overwhelming sense of reflection on the seriousness of life and fate, and how, despite transitory strength and enthusiasm, bitter resignation is the lot of mankind. It is a ballad UWE GRODD about heroes and their heroic deeds. Beethoven’s C minor Piano Concerto displays masterly strength and grandeur. Energy from the soloist is the driving force combined with expressive power, while the slow movement, a tender dream, is HENRY WONG DOE filled with melodic writing. We welcome celebrated New Zealand pianist Henry Wong Doe to perform this concerto with us. Henry is currently Professor of Piano at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is well known and highly sought after internationally. He brings brilliance and vitality as well as poetry to all his performances. New Zealand composer, David Hamilton, sees ‘composition a little like a sculpture - manipulating sounds and moving things around until one is satisfied. Sometimes working instinctively, sometimes in a more structured way.’ We are delighted to give the world premiere performance of his new work Fanfare for Matariki, commissioned by MSO. 6 7
MAHLER 4 saturday 28 august 7.30pm MOZART Il Seraglio Overture STRAUSS Orchestral songs Morgen, Zueignung, Cäcilie : MAHLER Symphony No. 4 UWE GRODD Conductor anna leese soprano A Mahler symphony is, for any orchestra, a symbol of maturity. His fourth Symphony in G major, completed in 1900, is built around a single song - Das himmlische Leben (The Heavenly Life) - which describes, with naivety, all the pleasures awaiting us in heaven. The song is prefigured in various ways in the first three movements and sung in its entirety by a solo soprano UWE GRODD in the fourth movement. MSO welcomes lyric soprano, Anna Leese, now based in Dunedin, to sing Mahler’s Das himmlische Leben - a fervent and happy message - in this amazing 4th symphony. ANNA LEESE Anna will also charm us with Richard Strauss’ emotional orchestral songs Morgen (Tomorrow) - one of his most well known and frequently recorded songs - Zueignung (Devotion) and Cäcilie (Cecily) completed the day before his wedding and offered to his wife, Pauline, as a wedding gift. Mozart’s curtain-raiser Overture to his opera Il Seraglio is characterised by the use of instruments - unusual for its time - such as cymbals, big (Turkish) drums, piccolo and triangles. With The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart created the first of his great operatic masterpieces. It premiered on July 16, 1782, in Vienna and was a great success. 8 9
SCHEHERAZADE Saturday 20 november 7.30pm TCHAIKOVSKY Swan Lake Excerpts ERIC EWAZEN (USA) Concerto for Marimba & Strings RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade tianyi lu Conductor Rachel thomas marimba Guest conductor, New Zealander Tianyi Lu, who in 2020 won first prize at both the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Germany, as well as the Guido Cantelli International Conducting Competition in Italy, will lead the MSO in this colourful programme. We very much look forward to welcoming her return in our TIANYI LU 2021 season. She has chosen some of her favourite excerpts from Tchaikovsky's magical Swan Lake ballet to commence this wonderful concert. Percussionist, Rachel Thomas, will introduce us to Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra. RACHEL THOMAS Written for the virtuoso She-E Wu, this work is considered to be one of the flagships of the marimba repertoire, as well as one of the most popular concertos played by percussionists. It is one of the most beautiful pieces written for the instrument, composed in Ewazen’s neo- romantic harmonic language. Rachel brings her own five octave marimba to Manukau to perform this exhilarating work. Rimsky-Korsakov is a captivating magician in his mastery of the orchestra’s capabilities and his Scheherazade is a dazzling example of this. Oriental in flavour and dominated by the characters of the Sultan and the beautiful Scheherazade, the work tells their tender love story and paints fairy-tale pictures of an oriental bazaar and a whirling festival. Great power is overcome by beauty and love. 10 11
