THE MESSAGE From Fr. John Madigan BELONGING OR ATTENDING? When you are learning to take on your own faith, apart from family traditions and routines, it can feel like taking on religion for the first time. In my growing up years this decision occurred at the time of moving away to begin college. The decision was whether to continue going to Mass or not? To continue the practice of periodic Confession or just forget about it? As we all know there were many more reasons to need to consider going to Confession once we were in college and a good distance from home! Let me add that I was definitely NOT thinking of Seminary in those days; however, choices and actions were much more innocent those days than they are now! The warnings issued about expected behavior were adhered to with greater care than to warnings given now. The decision to consistently go to an early morning Mass for Lent was one those choices that I chose. Choosing that practice felt truly sacrificial when stepping out into inclement weather to walk or bicycle after too few hours of sleep. It meant that I had to come to understand I wasn’t just attending something, either to fulfill some obligation, or just to feel good. I slowly came to the notion of belonging. I belong to something bigger than myself that is lived out in a church faith community. If you are looking for a new Lenten practice this year to grow your faith, consider the practice of belonging to your church community. Not only for yourself, but for the person who may walk into the church with the need of being greeted and welcomed to a caring community. For the person who needs to be reminded that the church is not the hierarchy that may have turned them off or even hurt them, but is the people of God who, day in and day out, struggle in our brokenness and rejoice in our blessedness. The church is the people of God who belong to one another. If you were to choose to belong to the church community, what would that call for in attitude or practice in you? What would you need to do in prayer and action to truly belong, rather than just attend? Why not choose it this Lent? Fr John. FEATURED STORY Sir Edmund Hillary Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mount Everest. On May 29, 1953 he scaled the highest mountain then known to man-29,000 feet straight up. He was knighted for his efforts. He even made American Express card commercials because of it! However, until we read his book, High Adventure, we don’t understand that Hillary had to grow into this success. You see, in 1952 he attempted to climb Mount Everest, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to address its members. Hillary walked on stage to a thunderous applause. The audience was recognizing an attempt at greatness, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the edge of the platform. He made a fist and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, “Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I’ll beat you the next time because you’ve grown all you are going to grow… but I’m still growing!” A God wink is something taken as evidence that a higher power is at work; a coincidence with divine alignment. They happen to everyone. Share your story by sending a brief description to news@holyrosaryseattle.org and we’ll help you write it. 1
FEATURED MINISTRY Praying for our Elect During Lent This last Thursday, March 6th, four Holy Rosary students, Eric C., Emmy L., Gabriel K. and Olivia P. who are becoming Catholic, were at St. James Cathedral for the Rite of Election. There they signed their names in the Book of Elect. At the end of the Rite, the Catechumens are now referred to as the Elect or the “the illuminandi” which means those who will be enlightened. They begin their final preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist) and will receive these three Sacraments at our upcoming Easter Vigil. Throughout Lent please pray for our Elect with this special prayer: A Prayer for the Elect: Eric, Emmy, Gabriel and Olivia Lord and God, You know the secrets of our hearts and reward us for the good we do. Look kindly on the efforts and progress of your servants. Strengthen them on their way, increase their faith and accept their repentance. Open to them to your goodness and justice And lead them to share in your Sacraments on earth, Until they finally enjoy your presence in heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
