Mission
The Corps of Cadets will conduct Recognition
Day activities for the class of 2020 on March
18th, 2017 from 1130 to 1700 on The Citadel
campus and Marion Square. The objective is
to successfully complete a physically and
mentally challenging series of obstacles and
culminate the Fourth Class System.

Execution
Commander’s Intent: To mark completion of a successful “knob year” and initiate the
   transition into the S.C.C.C. using rigid physical training to reinforce teamwork and
   camaraderie.
Concept of Operations:
March 17th:
 • Phase 1: Morning P.T. (Company Stationary, Regimental Run)
 • Phase 2: Leadership Training
March 18th:
 • Phase 3: “The Gauntlet”
 • Phase 4: Knob Recognition

Heat Injuries
• Knobs with prior heat injuries must be identified
  with a PT belt slung diagonally across the body
• Identified by HA teams NLT 10 March 2017
• Commanders and chain of command must have
  index cards with names of prior heat injuries.

Heat Injuries
• Heat exhaustion: This condition often occurs when people exercise
  (work or play) in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through
  sweating, causing dehydration and overheating of the body. The
  person's temperature may be elevated, but not above 104 F (40 C).
• Heat exhaustion symptoms
    –   Often pale with cool, moist skin
    –   Sweating profusely
    –   Muscle cramps or pains
    –   Feels faint or dizzy
    –   May complain of headache, weakness, thirst, and nausea
        Core (rectal) temperature elevated-usually more than 100 F (37.7 C) and the pulse
        rate increased

Heat Injuries
•   Heat stroke: Heat stroke, also referred to as a “heatstroke” or “sun stroke,” is a
    life-threatening medical condition. The person's cooling system, which is
    controlled by the brain, stops working and the internal body temperature rises
    to the point at which brain damage or damage to other internal organs may
    result (temperature may reach 105 F or greater [40.5 C or greater]).
• Heat stroke symptoms
     – Unconscious or has a markedly abnormal mental status (dizziness, confusion,
       hallucinations, or coma)
     – Flushed, hot, and dry skin (although it may be moist initially from previous sweating
       or from attempts to cool the person with water)
     – May have slightly elevated blood pressure at first that falls later
     – May be hyperventilating
     – Rectal (core) temperature of 105 F (40.5 C) or more

Heat Injuries
Alert sports medicine immediately to any
possible injuries. Do not try to treat without
contacting sports medicine

Hydration should be occurring now up until

Phase 1: Company Stationery and
Regimental Run Friday March 17th
0530-0640: Company PT 0530-First Call
• 0532 - Steele (No PT in Barracks)
• 0535 - Assembly/Accountability/Stretches
• 0540 - Jog to Parade Field
• 0545 - Corps Stationary PT IAW PT standard
• 0615 - Form-Up for Run
• 0620 - Regimental Run led by the Regimental Commander at
  Airborne Shuffle pace.
• 0640 - Return to barracks for hygiene        12

•   BN Staff, COs, ALL CADRE AND CADRE STAFF will lead PT on Friday morning.
        –There will be no other rank holders or privates permitted.
    •Airborne Shuffle to and from field
•   No Cadets with Fourth Class violations may participate.
•   Only current billet holders
•   PT supervised by Company, Battalion, Regimental Athletic Officers.
•   UC position at rear unless leading PT
•   Uniform - Summer PT’s, reflective (PT) belts, and short white socks.
•   4C will NOT have Camelbacks
•   Emergency water near Sports Medicine and on JOD/OD cart.
•   Cadre in Navy Blue Shirts, athletic in Light Blue Shirts
•   XPT cadets will be in bleachers overseen by BN Adjutants

Authorized Exercises in extended platoon formation:
•     Side straddle hops
•     Push-ups [wide, regular, and narrow grips]
•     Lunges/squats
•     Crunches
•     Sit-ups/supine bicycle [individual, partnered, and group]
•     Flutter kicks
•     High knees]
•     Mountain Climbers
•     Burpies
      Each exercise must be conducted during the allotted time, with a maximum of 20 repetitions. Exercises
      can be repeated. All exercises will be monitored by the company athletic officer. Do not repeat the
      same exercise “over and over”.
Anyone who violates this guidance will be removed from all rec day events
There will be no relays, sprints, buddy carries, wheelbarrows, ect.

•   ONE WAY, does NOT include Indian Hill, road guards will be posted
•   Battalions will form up on the field behind their respective staff.
•   Battalions will wait for Regimental Commander to begin run.
•   1st Battalion - 1BN Pad.
•   2nd Battalion - Pad between 1BN and 2BN
•   3rd Battalion - 2BN Pad
•   4th Battalion - Pad between 2BN and 3BN
•   5Th Battalion - 3BN Pad
•   Order for the run will be 5th through 1st BN for simultaneous entry into BNs
•   Company guidons carried by current clerks. BN colors carried by a current member
    of BN Staff

• Double time Movements
• Rotate stations every 6 minutes. Time starts on horn.
• Rotations designated by an air horn. Time clocks will be posted at both locations
  to allow time checks. Monitored by Regimental Ops
• Current rank holding cadre members & command teams will wear issued blue PT
  shirts for leadership identification.
• Athletic in light blue.
• All Guidons (Company and BN) will be planted into the deck in front of bleachers
  prior to starting
• Hydration should occur at all times, specifically between stations and while
  waiting at a station
• Camelbacks checked for serviceability NLTMarch 13th

•   Current Athletic Officers will explain each station and ensure that each company move to and from events
    in a timely manner.
•   Each Company AO will be assigned to one station and stay there for duration of Gauntlet. Battalion AOs
    will be assigned to area to monitor.
           –     AO is ultimately in charge of all activities performed.
           –     AO should have count of knobs to participate in Rec Day
•   Each station will be marked by a yard sign corresponding to their notecard.
•   Consequences for 1-on-1 PT and satellites
       – Send the UC back to their barracks. (Regt/BN Athletic Officers)
•   One cadet to take photos per CO, in white spirit shirt.
•   Do not take photos or videos of treatment of medical patients – HIPPA
•   Those Freshmen who are not participating in Recognition Day due to injuries will be at the bleachers
•   General Leave for those UC who are not participating

Station 1 - Tire Flip
• Maximum of 4 cadets per tire
• Cadets will flip the tire 25m, then perform
  10 decline pushups with their feet on the tire.
• Alt Exercise: Burpees

Station 2 - Prowler Relays
• 3 prowlers; consisting of 90 lbs, 70 lbs, or
  50 lbs sleds.
• Cadets will relay the prowler 25m.
• Weights will not be removed from sleds
• Alt Exercise: Leg Raises/Crunches

Station 3- Tunnel
• Cadets will have four points of contact with ground and
  create a single line. (It may curve to adjust to the space).
• The first cadet will “low crawl” under the tunnel.
• Once the first cadets crawls, the second will follow, and then
  continue until each cadet goes.
• Continue until time is up.

Station 4 - Crawls
• Cadets will perform as many 25m crawls as
  they can within the time constraints.
• Crawls Authorized: bear crawls, seal crawls,
  low crawls, crab walk.

Station 5 - Log PT
• Cadets will be distributed evenly to the logs. They will
  perform with the lifting technique, flat backs, and no fast
  movements.
• Approved Lifts: chest press, bicep curls, sit ups, ground to
  waist lifts.
• No direct overhead lifts.
• Alt Exercise: Push-ups

Station 6 - Speed Ladders
• 2 speed ladders or rope and stake layouts will be set up
  parallel to each other.
• Knobs will be divided into two lines. Knobs will run one after
  the other through the ladder or over the ropes and return to
  the end of the line.
• Running pattern in this order:
  1.“Quick Feet” 2. Side Step 3. Backwards
  4. Hopping on one foot 5. Hopscotch 6. Ski Jump

Station 7 - Sandbags
• Cadets will build a barrier on the opposite side of the station
• Cadets will then build a circular barrier back at the original
  location
• Cadets will lunge from one side to the other, build, take
  down, and repeat until time expires.
• Note: The sandbags must be piled at the original location
  before time expires.

Station 8 - Team PT
• Cadets must lock arms standing shoulder to shoulder and
  perform lunges together for 25m
• Upon completion groups of 4 will conduct 10 pushups
  together in a square formation (aim for 2 sets total in the 8
  minutes).
• Process repeated until time expires.
• Use the proper technique for lunge to avoid knee injuries

Station 9 - Ammo Can Lift
•   15-30 ammo cans per station
•   Cadets will perform chest press, squats, lunges.
•   30 reps before switching off.
•   NO THROWING THE AMMO CANS
•   NO OVERHEAD MOVEMENTS
•   Alt Exercise: Front Plank

Station 10 - Kettlebell Station
• 15- 25 lbs Kettlebells / (15) - 45 lbs Kettlebells
• Exercise performed will be lunges, kettlebell
  swings, and goblet squats
• Exercises will be rotated.
• Keep proper form to
  Minimize risk of injury.

Station 11 - Med Ball Partner Toss
• Cadets will stand chest passing the medicine balls
  approximately 3 yards apart and gradually move
  farther apart until approximately 8 yards.
• Other Exercises will include: Granny Tosses and
  Russian Twist
• Cadets will then repeat until the expiration of time.
• Not on WLI Field

Station 12 - Wheelbarrow/ Buddy/ Fireman Carry

• Cadets will rotate with their partners doing 25m carries:
  wheelbarrows, buddy carry, fireman carry.
• Repeat through the full duration of the station.
• Not on WLI Field

Phase 4: Knob Recognition
• 1245 - Form up for Victory Lap and return to respective BNs
  upon completion of the run.
• 1305 - Class Set (120 push ups)
• 1310 - “Home Sweet Home” bag-piped over PA system
• 1312 - Address by Regimental Commander
• 1315 - 4th Class system ends
• 1315-1330 - Knob recognition
• 1330 - Snacks and Gatorade in BN
• 1400 - Personal hygiene time

• Two guards assigned to front sally port. Addition Guard assigned to Sports
  Medicine entry point
       – Three total on guard
• 1st,2nd, 3rd , and 5th BN guard teams - REAR Sally Port for Sports Medicine
    – 4th BN guards will open the gates Nearest Law Barracks (3rd BN)
   •Sallyport will be secured from parents so there is a clear path for Sport Medicine.

• Front Gates locked once COs inside

• All traffic shut down during Victory Lap

• Gates - locked up as last company has entered.
• BN Ops Officers - report, via radios, when all of
  their companies have finished their class sets.
• The Regt. CO will begin his address once all
  companies have finished their class sets

• P.A. system needs to be checked on the morning of Rec Day
• Operations Officers will report any failures with the P.A.
  system in their BN.

  monitor the Knobs in case of emergencies.

     –Van will depart 2BN at 1415
