HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK THAT WAS ON SOCIAL MEDIA "When you open your heart to the King of Love, to Jesus, and follow him, you let yourself become more attuned to the joys and heartaches of living." Dr Chris Dalton ‘In a real sense all life is interrelated. All persons are caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly…’ These words have never been more true... “Most church people believe they are leading their Christian lives most fully and visibly when they are at church, but most of the ‘regular’ work or their everyday life doesn’t seem particularly connected to their faith. And yet, we come to church, not because it is the best or only place to experience God, but because at church, in community, we can feel and see and hear of God’s presence and promise.” Rev. Cam McAdam
This week...with Cam Let me begin by thanking you for your care and encouragement this week (for your celebration too!!), it has been humbling and kind, and not just for me, but your concern for Georgie, Ruth, Esther and Will deeply appreciated. Visiting It feels great to be doing some visiting again now that restrictions allow, and people are a little more relaxed about having people in their homes. If you would like a visit, I would really welcome you letting me know and we can schedule a suitable time. Sunday This Sunday we will celebrate communion. Lots of thought will go into how we serve as safely as we can. It is permitted for churches and community organisations to serve food, using a COVID-Safe process. It may take a little longer to serve everyone, but after so long, I’m sure this will be special. If you are using the livestream, let me encourage you to prepare elements at home, and to again think about the space, perhaps include some symbols to enhance your participation and experience. On Sunday, we’ll also ask our welcomers to carry the offering plate through church (it won’t be passed) so that people can make an open plate offering if they would like. Church Council Our annual general meeting will be held on March 21, and I would like to remind you that it is the congregation’s responsibility to ensure we have a Church Council to oversee the life of our Village Church. Amongst other things, the Church Council shares with the minister in mission, in the pastoral and spiritual oversight of the congregation. We have 3 vacancies and I want to encourage you to be thinking about whether you might be suitable, but also considering and praying about who else might fill these roles. I would welcome a conversation anytime.
Bible study Lent 3 If in a group, welcome each other and share. Question… ➢ What is it about church that draws you to participate week in, week out? Reading John 2. 13-22 Question… ➢ How do you feel about Jesus’s posture, language, tone, and actions in the temple? Are you offended by his anger? His violence? His zeal? If yes, why? Some thoughts… Given that the 4 gospels all tell this story a bit differently, there is some conjecture in its interpretation. What is interesting about John’s story, is not only its location, but unlike Matthew, Mark and Luke who include Jesus quoting Isaiah and Jeremiah, accusing Temple authorities of turning the Lord’s house into a den of thieves, which meant defrauding the poor, corruption of the Temple leaders, and collusion with the Romans, John’s account, uses the term ‘marketplace.’ He calls into question the necessary act of changing coins (Roman to Temple) in order to purchase sacrificial animals and obey sacrificial law – in other words John’s story calls into question the whole temple system. John opens his gospel telling us that, the Word that was with God and is God has now become flesh. Jesus is ‘The Lamb of God,’ as John the Baptist adds, ‘who takes away the sin of the world.’ He is, again from the first chapter, the embodiment of “grace upon grace”. David Lose says, “There is therefore no further need for sacrifice; Jesus’ incarnated, embodied grace suffices fully, wholly, entirely, and completely.” Question… ➢ What cherished version of God, church, piety, or worship does Jesus threaten in this story? Prayer Spend time in prayer, holding your thoughts, and if in a group, your conversation and time together, before God.
THE WEEK THAT WAS AT THE VILLAGE CHURCH… A big effort by our Senior KUCA group last Friday... Can you believe that such a small group last Friday put together 71 filled backpacks? Well done to our Senior KUCA group on such a big effort. When the group dispersed, another 9 were finished off as well. A total of 80 backpacks are now ready to be blessed before heading off to the Mission Liaison Group Shed. It seems most likely that they’ll then go to Joy Jino, South Pacific Area President of the World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women. Joy’s in Honiara, capital of Solomon Islands. A big thank you to everyone who contributed items for our backpacks! A special visitor at the Mullins new house… Phil, Sally and Eva Mullins family were very excited to move into their new house just before Christmas. There’s still work to do, but the family are relishing the settling in process. This week, they had a surprise visitor checking in on how they were settling in... Mt Eliza’s Percy the Peacock paid a visit and came right up on the porch to the front door., providing a delightful, memorable experience. We understand that Percy was also a regular visitor for Rose Rowland (a much loved previous church member), who also lived in the same street for many years prior to her passing.
Friendship group returns...Tuesday 16 March 2021 On Tuesday March 16th at 1.30pm our members and friends are invited to an Afternoon Tea in the Narthex. We are pleased that Cameron McAdam will be joining with us. We are so looking forward to seeing everyone again - 12months is a long time. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to ring Ronda on 0400972914. We ask that you RSVP to this invitation for our catering arrangements. To RSVP please ring Margaret Ferguson on 9787 2090. The Friendship Group Committee . Ladies morning coffee…. The Ladies morning coffee catch up recently resumed, meeting at HomeGround café on Robertson Drive Mornington. There were 11 ladies in attendance. It was a lovely time of sharing and catching up. Such opportunities are definitely not taken for granted! HomeGround café is also a great place to get behind, as it’s a social enterprise café, with a mission to support young people by providing vocational training and employment pathways. It also creates community and belonging in its local neighbourhood and the wider Mornington Peninsula region. They serve great coffee and food too! The next Ladies coffee catch up at HomeGround café will be held on Friday 12th March at 10am. All are welcome, although please RSVP to Marilyn on 0417 321 457 as numbers are limited due to Covid.
Fusion’s new Op shop ‘thrift’ on Progress is now open at 26 Progress Street Mornington, just down from Commonfolk. Please go along to provide your support for this exciting new initiative, and if you could spare a few hours a week to volunteer or have some ‘specific skills’, Caitlin would love to hear from you.
The Village Church upcoming AGM 2021 and Church Council elections The Village Church Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held after the service on Sunday 21 March 2021. The normal business of the AGM is: 1. The election of Church Council members and representatives to Presbytery. 2. The reception of Annual reports from Church Council, the ministry teams and groups. Nominations are now invited for the following positions, which will be elected at this year’s AGM: ➢ 3 x Church Council vacancies. These vacancies are not for specific positions – all skill sets will be welcome to assist in the entire running of the church: maintenance, finance, staffing, programs, pastoral care, activities, worship, budgeting, outreach. ➢ 1 x Presbytery Representatives vacancy Forms for nominations are available in the church foyer or you can email the church office at ucame@hotmail.com.au to request a form. Completed forms are to be returned to John Connan or Sally Mullins in the Church office by Sunday 14 March 2021. Any questions, don’t hesitate to speak with John Connan, Kaye de Wijn or Cam McAdam.
Know the Past, Change the Future. April 12th – 16th, 2021 Since 2001, Fusion has run the Pilgrimage to Uluru; a transformational journey that gives young people the opportunity to stop, listen and be transformed as they learn of the past, so that they can change the future. After listening to our Aboriginal friends, schools and young people, and considering what it means to support people to thrive in a pandemic, without compromising their safety and health, the Pilgrimage to Uluru did not go ahead in 2020. In 2021, it is going to look a little different. In 2021, they are co-ordinating state based pilgrimages in an effort to balance safety and health concerns with the need to provide an opportunity for young people to stop, listen and be transformed as they learn of the past, so that they can change the future. As part of the Pilgrimage, they will host three live streams on the Fusion Australia Facebook page; hear from a panel of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander friends and ask questions, as we celebrate culture, learn about the past and explore how we can be part of changing the future. Fusion are looking for supporters to help sponsor young people and financial support to provide honorariums for the three livestreams. For those who participated in the amazing live-streamed Prayer Service, “Changing the Heart” at Willum Warrain, and for those who would like to have; Fusion are inviting us to contribute to, and be a part of an exciting opportunity for livestream discussion for people of all ages with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from across Australia.
