My dear family of St. Matthew! Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor September includes for us here in our Glendale Heights parish family a very special (630) 469-6300 ext. 312 annual celebration: our PATRONAL FEAST of St. MATTHEW! His actual feast day is September 21st, but since that falls on a Monday this year, we will celebrate it as our Parish Patronal Feast on the weekend prior, namely, for Sunday, September 20th. With the unprecedented circumstances this year from the coronavirus, we will not be celebrating it with a parish picnic as we had been considering before Covid, but let’s prepare spiritually with a refreshing, purifying nine-days of prayer called a novena (please go to our website stmatthewchurch.org and find the St. Matthew Novena). But first, a prayer to St. Matthew, whether you will follow the novena or not: just praying this prayer everyday will bring many graces from heaven through St. Matthew’s intercession, without following the full nine-day novena prayers. Prayer to Saint Matthew O glorious St. Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah and the new Moses. Jesus fulfilled the Prophets and founded a Church of the New and Eternal Covenant in His self-giving Love. Obtain the grace for us today to see Jesus living in His Church. Help us to follow Him every day of our lives on earth, and then to live and share His merciful teaching so that we all may live with Him in heaven forever. Amen. A novena (from Latin: novem, "nine") is an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity, consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. A pious tradition says that perhaps the nine days between the Feast of the Ascension and Pentecost, when the disciples gathered in the upper room and devoted themselves to prayer, could be considered the first novena. However, the actual, more widespread practice of a nine-day set of prayers is actually relatively recent in the history of our beautiful Catholic Church. Today, in many Christian communities around the world, such as in Africa, Latin America and the Philippines, novena traditions are popular and include devotional rituals such as congregational prayers, statue decoration, hymn singing with music, as well as community fiesta events over beverages, refreshments or processions. Individuals may express love and honor by kneeling, burning candles or placing flowers before the person represented by a statue. Four kinds of novenas can now be distinguished: novenas of mourning, of preparation, of prayer, and the indulgenced novenas, though this distinction is not exclusive. The first novena indulgenced in the city of Rome, approved in 1713, and even there for only one church, was the novena in preparation for the feast of St. Joseph in the church of St. Ignatius. But not until later, especially from the beginning of the nineteenth century, were various novenas enriched with indulgences in common for the whole Church. The prayers may be derived from devotional prayer books or consist of the recitation of the rosary (a "rosary novena"), or of short prayers through the day. Novena prayers are customarily printed in small booklets, and the novena is often dedicated to a specific angel, saint, Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or one of the personages of the Holy Trinity. The novena very likely may have its roots in ancient funeral-related rituals. One practice of the novena involves celebrating daily Masses held for nine days with devotional prayers to someone who has died. This practice may trace its origins to an early Greek and Roman custom performed by families, consisting of nine days of mourning after the death of a loved one. Over time, our devout faithful ancestors began to associate novenas with Christian themes such as the nine months Jesus spent in the womb, the giving up of His spirit at the ninth hour, and the event which occurred in the Upper Room with Twelve Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary when they prayed for nine days until the Holy Spirit descended on the Feast of the Pentecost (see Acts, 1:12 – 2:5). The Church Fathers also assigned special meaning to the number nine, seeing it as symbolic of imperfect man turning to God in prayer because of its proximity with the number ten, symbolic of perfection and God. < — CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE By the Middle Ages the practice of the novena prayer grew especially to prepare for nine days before a feast in honor of a saint identified on a liturgical calendar. Then, further development brought about widespread practice of the novena by the 11th century as a means of praying to petition a spiritual or personal favor through a saint, especially our Blessed Virgin Mary, or perhaps St. Jude, and today even St. Matthew! As the centuries have progressed, into the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the Catholic Church began formally approving novenas, in particular through the papal approvals of a large number of novenas by Pope Pius IX, who was Pope from 1846 to 1878. Novenas are one beautiful spiritual tool that can echo God’s Word in our daily lives. As we prepare to begin our Family Faith Formation soon, let this opportunity for praying a novena in honor, in preparation, in supplication to St. Matthew be a chance for you (and your family) to hear and live the Word of God – especially as preserved by St. Matthew in his Gospel. A Catechist is someone who ECHOES God’s Word to others. Catechesis — echoing God’s word into the world through our hearts — is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life . . . her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (no. 7). Each of us has responsibility to share our faith with others, and this ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity. In a particular way, parents have a special calling as truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. This month, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. With this in mind, let us pray at this moment now a Prayer for Family Commitment: Loving and merciful Father, who instituted the family as an instrument of your fruitful love and raised it to be a sacrament of the love of your Son for his Church, send forth your Holy Spirit to forgive us for our sinful failures, to heal the personal and social wounds that afflict us, to bring consolation to the vulnerable among us, and to enable us to reach out in compassionate care to all those families in need. Make possible within us and for us what only you can do. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessings of shalom and joy and good health for all, especially our dear young people who seek the good things that lead to lasting happiness and meaning!
