January 2020 Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Services at St. John’s 7:00 p.m. Contemporary (Celebration musicians) 11:00 p.m. Traditional (Chancel Choir and Bells) A beautiful and enduring tradition! Join us for either service and hear the beautiful Christmas story from the Bible, sing Christmas carols, and light candles as we sing “Silent Night.” For many people, this is the highlight of the Advent and Christmas sea- son and truly expresses how wonderful it is to be together in this inspiring season! A New Year—Time to Tidy up! (Sermon Series to consider the wisdom of Proverbs) There are seasons of life when it seems we have chaos all around; the rate of change makes it difficult to find any peace; or the changes thrust upon us by a life transition can steal away our sense of equilibrium. In those times, priorities help us to make sense of life and re- claim our balance. As a young King of Israel, God spoke to Solomon in a dream and promised him a wish fulfilled, “Ask anything and I will do it,” God said. Solomon chose to ask for wisdom to be able to rule with justice. God was pleased to grant this request and when all the wisdom sayings of Solomon were gathered up, we have them today in the Book of Proverbs. In the coming month we will consider the wisdom Proverbs contains for us in these areas of life: 1/5—Getting our priorities in order (Proverbs 21) 1/12—Getting our words in order (15:1-2, 17:27-28, 18:21) 1/19—Getting our finances in order (Proverbs 22:7, 11:25) 1/26—Getting our sex-lives in order (Proverbs 5:1-5, 15-18) New Member Orientation—Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 Starts January 8 – Three sessions – Becoming Followers of Jesus Session One—History of the United Methodist Church Our theology is based on God’s grace Faith & Christian action are both important What is unique about our tradition as United Methodists? Session Two—Discovery of your Spiritual Gifts The story of St. John’s UMC Mission Outreaches, The Center What is our Mission statement as a congregation? Session Three—Growing in faith, getting connected What does it mean to be a member? How to continue as a growing Christian? Making the commitment to be a DISCIPLE (a learner) Page 2
