Summer 2021 OUTLINE of Programs We are so excited to share with you what we have planned for an EPIC summer 2021. It’s going to be wild! Each week, kids at home (or at the library) will join Page Turner and Kenny (plus a cast of kids) as they jump into the Once Upon a Time Machine in search of stories and adventure. Each week includes…. Show Day: We present an original, interactive show that’s sure to engage kids. Craft Day: Simple, fun crafts that inspire creativity. Author/ Illustrator Day: Short interviews with some of the best creators working in kidlit. Mashup Day: Recipes, games, bonus crafts, and other fun stuff that didn’t fit in the other days. Special Guest/Field Trip Day: We virtually visit some amazing places and people including mini-shows from other fantastic performers. Check out our incredible lineup below.
Week #1:Farmyard Friends SHOW DAY: MYRTLE OVER THE MOON In this original Moooosical Adventure, a “boring bovine” seeks love and fame on MooTube by attempting to jump over the moon using a trampoline, roller skates, and a jetpack. She fails, but finally realizes the appreciation she craves was there all along. A cast of talented kids join Kenny and Page Turner in this tale of farmyard friendship. CRAFT DAY: Cow Over the Moon Paper Plate Spinners With a couple of paper plates and a few simple supplies, kids can make their own Myrtles or Clydes or Jessicas or…. AUTHOR DAY: Tammi Sauer Tammi Sauer, has written 30 picture books with more on the way! In THE FARM THAT MAC BUILT: The scarecrow from Old Mac Donald’s farm emcees a barnyard theater production that collapses into hilarious chaos in this rollicking rendition of “The House That Jack Built.” And in NOT NOW, COW, all of the farm animals are ready for the seasons to change—but not Cow. Visit her at: Tammisauer.com MASHUP DAY: Clucking Chicken Cups Time for another egg-cellent craft. Today we’re making chickens out of cups that actually cluck! GUEST DAY: Kamal Bell from Sankofa Farms Kamal Bell is not your average farmer. He started the 12-acre Sankofa Farms, in Durham, NC to improve food policy, teach nutritional literacy, and educate kids about agricultural-related professions. Kamal will take us on a virtual tour of Sankofa farms, including their working beehives, and give kids a "taste" of modern farm life. Visit his website at sankofafarmsllc.com
WEEK #2: Fish Tales SHOW DAY: The Ocean’s Got Talent We’ve searched the seven seas for some of the ocean’s most talented creatures. Octopus will perform an amazing escape, Mantis Shrimp will prove he’s not just a pretty face, and Angler Fish has an act you’ll definitely want to catch. With all this talent, will Sea Slug be able to shine? Puppetry and live action make this show a watery wonder. CRAFT DAY: “Printed” Ocean Scenes With some recycled styrofoam and water based markers, kids can make their own beautiful ocean scenes. AUTHOR DAY: Kate Messner Kate Messner is passionately curious and writes books for kids who wonder, too. Visit her at katemessner.com. During our interview, we’ll talk about two books in Kate’s Over and Under series. A secret world is brought to life in OVER AND UNDER THE POND. Readers will discover the plants and animals that make up the rich, interconnected ecosystem of a mountain pond. And, in OVER AND UNDER THE RAINFOREST we’ll discover the wonder that lies hidden among the roots, above the winding rivers, and under the emerald leaves of the rainforest. MASHUP DAY: Coffee Filter Fish They’re not just for coffee anymore! With some water based markers and a little H2O, coffee filters are transformed into colorful fish. GUEST PERFORMER: Yasu Ishida Yasu is an award-winning performer who combines traditional Japanese theatre, music, origami, magic, and storytelling into one-of-a-kind performances. Yasu will share an excerpt of his show and teach kids how to make origami water creatures! WEEK #3: PET PALS SHOW DAY: SUCH A LIBRARY! When Page and Kenny leave the house, their pets, Philo, Moxie, and Pip like to read books, watch TV, and play on the computer. What do they watch? A live action/animated show about a wacky librarian, a magic book and, of course, lots of animals. Based on the book SUCH A LIBRARY! By Jill Ross Nadler *Chicken Art by Esther Van Den Berg CRAFT DAY: Pet Pop Up Books With an old file folder and a pair of scissors, kids can create their own magical pop up books! AUTHOR/Illustrator Day: Author Donna Gephart and illustrator Francesca Chessa We have two special guests today, Author Donna Gephart and illustrator Francesca Chessa who will talk about their picture book GO BE WONDERFUL! Which features a spunky girl named Daisy and her pet dog, Mr. Bonkers. We’ll also get a sneak peek at Donna’s new novel for older readers, ABBY TRIED AND TRUE. Visit Donna at: donnagephart.com and Francesca at: francescachessa.format.com MASHUP DAY: Pet Pal Open Face Sandwiches This delicious treat is part art project and part recipe, and all you need is a slice of bread and any fixins’ you can find around the house. GUEST DAY: Jamie Katz, Pet Detective Yup, pet detectives are really a thing, and Jamie Katz (her REAL name!) is one of the best as Kenny and Jill (aka Page Turner) found out first hand when Jamie helped them find their lost cat, Philo. Jamie will introduce us to her sniffer dogs, Gable and Fletcher and show kids how she trains them to help find lost pets.
Week #4: CELEBRITY CRITTERS SHOW DAY: The PAW-cademy Awards Get ready to roll out the red carpet when a cast of special guests join Kenny and Page during this classic awards-style show honoring furry friends of the silver screen, hero animals, and presidential pets. CRAFT DAY: Celebrity Paw Prints Using construction paper, paint, and craft foam, we’ll create celebrity paw prints worthy of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR DAY: Pat Cummings In addition to the Coretta Scott King and the Boston Globe-Horn Book awards, Pat Cummings is the recipient of thirty six t-shirts, eighteen mugs, three hundred fifty-one ballerina drawings and one embroidered pillow from readers. Pat will share her latest book WHERE IS MOMMY featuring a young sleuth and her pet cat. We’ll also meet a celebrity spider in ANANSE AND THE LIZARD. And, speaking of lizards, when his pal escapes, Harvey goes on a museum adventure in HARVEY MOON MUSEUM BOY. WEEK # 5: SAFARI STORIES SHOW DAY: The Sofa Safari Game Show What animal eats upside down? How many hearts does an octopus have? Can you hop as high as a kangaroo? These questions and more will be answered during Sofa Safari, the interactive game show that takes you on a safari without leaving your sofa! CRAFT DAY: Jungle Safari Flashlight Craft A zip lock bag, black and white construction paper, and permanent markers are all that’s needed to make this project that’s part craft and part optical illusion. ILLUSTRATOR DAY: David DePasquale Illustrator David DePasquale will share his debut picture book A WISDOM OF WOMBATS and invite kids to explore the wonderful words we use to describe groups of animals. And while this is David’s first picture book, he’s no stranger to art, having worked on animation for Netflix Animation, Disney Television Animation, Dreamworks TV, Warner Bros, Cartoon Network, to name a few. In fact, David is the lead character designer on Arlo the Alligator Boy, a new Netflix movie available this April! He’ll give us some tips and tricks for future illustrators and animators! Get ready for a ROARING good time when Jim shares some backstage stories and teaches kids how to make their own simple puppets. (craft supplies for puppet craft coming soon). Week #6: CREEPY CRAWLIES SHOW: Creature Feature Circus Felix the flea wishes he could be more like his many brothers and sisters, content to crawl through the fur on the back of the dog they call home. But when he meets Jessica the jumping spider, he decides to run away and join the circus in this original story book adventure with a virtual visit from a real jumping spider. CRAFT DAY: Climbing Spider Craft Grab some popsicle sticks, masking tape, and yarn to create a spider that can climb up any water spout. AUTHOR DAY: Candace Fleming Candace Fleming is the acclaimed author of more than forty books for children and young adults, including this year’s Sibert Medal Award Winning Book HONEYBEE: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera. We’ll chat with Candace about Bees and then we’ll talk about the true story of the Bronx Zoo’s First Woman Zoo Keeper, the subject of her book CUBS IN THE TUB. GUEST PERFORMER: Bobby Norfolk An internationally known storyteller, performer and teaching artist, Bobby Norfolk is a three-time Emmy Award winner, multiple Parents' Choice Gold and Silver Award winner, and a National Storytelling Network Oracle Award recipient. WEEK #7: FANTASTIC BEASTS SHOW DAY: The Book From Outer Space Last year, we did a live-action version of this show. This year it’s an ANIMATED MUSICAL ADVENTUREl When the Intergalactic Library is accidentally unplugged, the kids at home must join Kenny and Page on a virtual adventure to find an alien space slug to save the day. CRAFT DAY: Paper Plate Dinosaurs Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? With a paper plate, paint and a toilet paper tube, kids will bring these beauties back from extinction. ILLUSTRATOR DAY: Raissa Figeruoa OONA is a curious mermaid who loves searching for treasure with her otter friend. Artist Raissa Figueroa, brings Kelly diPuccio’s story to life with gorgeous underwater illustrations. Raissa lives and works in sunny San Diego, California where she loves walking the beaches in search of tiny treasures of her own. MASHUP DAY: Frozen Unicorn Horns ½ a banana, vanilla yogurt, and colorful sprinkles make this a magical treat. GUEST DAY: Dustin Growick, the Dinosaur Whisperer This week is DINO-mite with a special guest and author visit rolled into one. Dustin is the creator and host of Atlas Obscura’s Dinosaur 101 and the Dinosaur Show on Youtube. He’s also the author of DINOSAUR A-Z and UTTERLY AMAZING DINOSAUR from DK Books. WEEK #8: SWAMP STORIES SHOW DAY: Everglades Adventure https://www.dustingrowick.com/ Panthers, and Alligators, and Manatees...oh, my! Page Turner’s nemesis Pilfer Plotz has stolen the key to the Ghost Light Library and hidden it somewhere deep in the everglades. Kenny and Page must travel through the River of Grass in search of the key before the library vanishes forever! CRAFT DAY: Tube Snakes Not to be confused with tube steaks, these critters are made from paper towel tubes. AUTHOR DAY: Christina Soontornvat Christina Soontornvat is an award-winning author, engineer, and STEM educator. Her many works for children include picture books and the Diary of an Ice Princess chapter book series. Her middle grade fantasy novel, A Wish in the Dark, and All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team were both named 2021 Newbery Honor Books. We are thrilled to talk with Christina fresh off her TWO Newbery Honor wins (and Sibert Medal win). We’ll chat about several of her books including ALL THIRTEEN: THE INCREDIBLE CAVE RESCUE OF THE THAI BOYS’ SOCCER TEAM. While not technically animal-themed, it is a fantastic book and the name of the soccer team is the Wild Boars. So, hey, it works! Visit her at: soontornvat.com MASHUP DAY: Big Mouth Frog story and Origami Jumping Frog Page Turner tells the story of the Big Mouth frog, then shows the kids how to make their own jumping frogs using only an index card. GUEST PERFORMER: Roger Day Grab your boots! And join Roger Day on a musical journey when he sings an excerpt from his Marsh Mud Madness Show.
