Chris Waller Racing - Winners This Week Our Malambo 3yo F Duelled - Dancing Song by Senor Pete Our Malambo kicked off her Australian stint in the best possible fashion with a win at Randwick on Saturday over 1200m under Sam Weatherley. Previously trained by part owner Graeme Rogerson, Our Malambo had some decent form in New Zealand having won four and been placed several times before Rogerson sent her over to join the stable. She displayed that winning ability on Saturday as Weatherley settled her in midfield early before coming with a sustained challenge in the straight to hit the front inside the final furlong for a solid victory. Kaonic 3yo C Savabeel - Fast Love by Fastnet Rock This talented NZ-bred son of Savabeel returned from a spell with an impressive first up victory at Randwick on Saturday over 1400m. Visiting Kiwi apprentice Sam Weatherley was on board claiming a valuable 2kg allowance. Weatherley settled him well back in the field early on before saving ground towards the inside of the track in the straight. Once the gap appeared against the rail inside the final furlong, Kaonic sprinted through to score easily at the finish. Having had some high class form earlier in the year and being bred to improve with age, he is another exciting Mulcaster Bloodstock buy . Overstep 4yo M Exceed And Excel - Elusive Desire by Elusive Quality Thus talented daughter of Exceed And Excel confirmed her liking for Flemington when winning at Melbourne headquarters on Saturday over 1200m. Michael Walker took the mount and he buried her well back in the large field early on, in fact she was still close to last in the 20 runner field as they approached the business end of the race before letting down with a brilliant turn of foot to snatch the victory close to home. Three of her four career wins have been at Flemington and this win takes her career earnings to over $300,000. Huangshan 3yo G Redoute’s Choice - Majestic Girl by Galileo This son of Redoute’s Choice returned to winning form at Gosford last Thursday winning over 1900m. Lee Magorrian was on board and he gave him the perfect trip throughout settling fourth early in the six runner field. As they turned into the straight Magorrian was hard at work on Huangshan as stablemate Corinth looked to have stolen the race from the front but Huangshan responded gamely to get up in the final strides for a game victory. Impasse 3yo G Sepoy - Amelia’s Dream by Redoute’s Choice This gelded son of Sepoy scored at Kembla Grange on Saturday over 1400m under Lee Magorrian. Magorrian settled him in third spot early on, just off the speed, where he travelled well before coming with a sustained run in the home straight. The duo got on top inside the final furlong for a comfortable success. This was his second career victory from just seven starts and on this evidence he can continue to pay his way in the coming weeks. Trafalgar 5yo G Hinchinbrook - Skyescent by Regal Classic This son of the recently deceased sire Hinchinbrook returned to the winner’s circle at Canterbury on Wednesday over 1900m under in form apprentice Sam Weatherley who has enjoyed a profitable week of riding. Weatherley dropped Trafalgar in a spot just worse than midfield early on under his big weight, sticking towards the inside of the track. Trafalgar travelled well throughout and Weatherley brought him with a challenge between runners in the straight and once he got the gap he burst through for an impressive success. Kaonic on Group One path Chris Waller will follow a similar path followed by multiple Group One winner Boban with his impressive Randwick winner Kaonic. Waller said the talented son of Savabeel headed into his autumn three-year-old campaign as one of the stable’s leading Randwick Guineas contenders, but the trainer feels it “might have all come too quickly” for the colt which went some way to redeeming his reputation on Saturday. “Go back to a horse like Boban who won a similar race to this and went on and won five in a row including an Epsom and an Emirates,” Waller said. “I’ll look to go on a similar path with Kaonic and we’ll see how far he gets.” Kaonic was successful under leading New Zealand apprentice Sam Weatherley, who showed patience beyond his years waiting for a rails run, before diving into the smallest of gaps and pouncing. The victory gave the young Kiwi jockey his first Sydney metropolitan double. “You might be hearing more about him mightn’t we,” Waller said. “That was a 10 out of 10 ride there.” A $425,000 yearling at Karaka, Kaonic is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Fast Love and the family of the multiple European Group One winner Midway Lady. - Waikato Stud Video preview Click on the image to the left to watch this week’s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend from Chris and Charlie.
I can’t fault Winx Chris Waller admits he’s been looking for negatives when it comes to the world’s best horse but cannot find a thing that would suggest she’s taken a step back. And even Winx’s seventh-placing in Monday morning’s trial at Rosehill wasn’t going to deter he and connections from smiling. “Everyday [around the stable] I am looking for negative body language but I don’t see it,” Waller explained on Monday. “I am looking for her pinning her ears back when people walk into her stable, I don’t see it. “I’m just looking for a happy horse and I do see it. “It was good to see her get on her toes this morning [before the trial] and know she was alive, she knows when to switch on in terms of getting on her toes. “Even when Hughie gave her a little squeeze at the hundred, she just started to charge through the line and pulling up she was ready to go another lap. All in all I’m pretty happy after the trial... she went well, I went well and Hughie went well. “Obviously she didn’t figure in the first three but that was never the plan, the plan was to get around safely.” Waller confirmed Winx will head back to the trials in around 10 to 14 days time before she runs first- up in the Winx Stakes (formally known at Warwick Stakes) on August 18. After that, Waller says no plans have been made and stated an early Melbourne appearance has every chance of coming to fruition. “There’s a host of different races [where she can go to next],” said Waller. “As we saw last preparation, we threw in an extra race when she ended up in the Turnbull Stakes in Melbourne and the year before she raced in the Caulfield Stakes so we’ll keep all those options open.” - NZ Racing News
Unforgotten ‘a bit behind’ in spring plans Champion trainer Chris Waller has signalled that ATC Oaks-winning filly Unforgotten may not get to the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup. The current second favourite for the $5 million feature in many markets, Unforgotten was a notable absentee from the star-studded Rosehill trials on Monday, and Waller explained things have taken a little longer than he’d expected for the daughter of Fastnet Rock. “She’s a bit behind where we need her [in regards to] trial this morning,” Waller said on Monday. “Realistically we are following a Winx-type preparation with her where she’d go second-up most likely into an Epsom Handicap. “It makes it hard [to then run in the Caulfield Cup], so that’s something we’ve got to consider and discuss with the owners.” This year the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) is set to be run on September 29, which leaves just three weeks before the step-up to the 2400 metres of the Caulfield Cup on October 20. “The beauty of a horse like Unforgotten is we know she is a 2400-metre winner so it’s just a matter of stepping them up,” Waller added. “So we could take an unorthodox approach and perhaps go through the Epsom because we know she is so strong at 2400 metres. “So it’s still quite a long way away so I’d say she’ll have her first trial in about 10 days’ time.” While Winx and Chautauqua stole the show at the trials for different reasons, another of Waller’s spring prospects in Performer had his first hit-out, finishing midfield in heat 13. “[Performer] trialled beautifully this morning, he never got clear room and he was full of running in behind them,” said Waller. “He’ll go down either the Golden Rose path or get gradually down towards the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day. “He’s a Brazen Beau-type horse, a lot of speed and a lot of power there. “We won’t be in a rush to send him to the races, it will be in the second half of August either in Sydney or Melbourne.” G1 J.J. Atkins winner The Autumn Sun and stablemates Zousain and Lean Mean Machine are also now back in work and according to Waller will likely all progress to the Golden Rose before targeting either the Caulfield Guineas or Coolmore Stud Stakes. – Racing.com
Waller weighs in on staff debate Winx's trainer Chris Waller has weighed into the debate on racing's staff drought, calling on his peers to support changes to trackwork starting times. Speaking with Shane Anderson on After The Last on Friday, the Sydney-based horseman said he, like many other trainers around the country, was struggling to attract passionate and suitably qualified staff into ground work and track riding positions. Waller said one solution was to open metropolitan training tracks, many of which begin training from 4am, later to allow staff - including trainers and jockeys - more sociable hours. "The fact is staff are getting harder and harder to get and times are changing, we need to look after a stable hands social life as well as their pay packet," Waller said. "They need a passion to work in the industry and fortunately most of the people that work in the game have it but unfortunately it’s a dying art. "There are not as many country people getting involved in racing and the cities are getting bigger and people like myself training in the city, we don't have pony clubs to call on, we don't have the schools to call on because we've got to make sure the staff are 16 to start with. "That leaves a very small group of people that want to work with horses and then you've got to speak to them about the starting times. "I have (had conversations about changing trackwork times) and they (racing authorities) have been very supportive but it seems to come down to our fellow trainers and there are a lot of people that are scared to take the step and fully support it. "We need the trainers to support it, why are they scared to change? "There are plenty of people that will go on record and say that we should start later but when it comes to a vote, at least in Sydney, a lot of trainers don't want to change." Like several Victorian trainers including Mick Kent have endorsed, Waller also said pay increases would provide additional motivation for individuals to seek employment in racing. However he tempered that argument by questioning whether increasing training fees to facilitate pay increases was sustainable for the long-term growth of racehorse ownership. "We try to pay our staff as best we can but at the end of the day it comes down to putting your bills up higher and higher," he said. "I myself am at $127 a day in Sydney and that's a fair bit to ask an owner to pay for, although I could go higher, I'm certainly not the highest in Sydney. "We could go up to $200 a day, pay the staff more, pay them what workers are getting on the roads for working crazy hours, which could be the next step. "But what happens next? Do we end up with no horses because there are trainers able to train in the country for a lot cheaper?"- Racing.com Recently Named Horses Name Breeding Accession Brazen Beau - Ready As Elle colt Karin Honour Charm Spirit - Trepidation colt Lot’s Wife I Am Invincible - No Looking Back filly Zalatte Medaglia d’Oro - Za Star filly
Tough decision pays off for Rogerson A chance meeting at the Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale back in May had a fairy-tale conclusion at Royal Randwick on Saturday for iconic kiwi trainer Graeme Rogerson when three-year-old filly (Our) Malambo scored at her first start from the all-conquering Chris Waller stable. Rogerson and wife Debbie prepared the Duelled filly for four wins from twenty starts in New Zealand before she was entered in the Gold Coast Sale to be sold as a racing and breeding prospect. After failing to meet her $300,000 reserve Rogerson was mulling over what to do next with the filly he part owns along with Gavin and Shane Wealleans when he started chatting with Waller. “I wasn’t going to give her away so when she didn’t make her reserve we had to think about what to do next,” said Rogerson. “I happened to run into Chris and he really liked the filly. We had a good chat and decided to send her to him for a Sydney campaign. “I’ve always liked the way Chris operates, right from the time I first met him. His record speaks for itself and with the money on offer in Sydney it wasn’t a tough decision, especially as we’ve always felt she could measure up to top company.” Rogerson was confident of a good performance on the weekend after reports from the Waller camp indicated the filly was flying in trackwork. “The communication from Chris and his team is first class and they told us she was really going well,” he said. “James McDonald ride her in a trial and gave her a good report then Hughie Bowman galloped her on Tuesday and was very pleased with her work. “She was up against it a little on Saturday with the weight she had so that’s why Chris put young Sam Weatherley on her to get the claim. He rode her perfectly and she showed a great turn of foot to put them away when she got into the clear.” - Racingnew.co.nz
