An integrated arts approach to bring
learning alive for students is at the heart of
the Artist- in- Residence (AIR) program for
6 th graders at the Henniker Community
School. This year's AIR program will focus
on Africa. During the months leading to the
final event on January 11, 2018, the
students have worked to gain a greater
understanding of the culture, geography,
and history the region.
Henniker 6 th graders also explored the rich
colors and tradition of mosaics in Africa with
Hopkinton, NH, artist Lizz Van Saun in
November and December.
In January, the students will learn with two

artists, Steve Ferrais and James Marshall,
on the djembe hand-drumming technique,
traditional West African rhythms, and
traditional West African dance during the
week of January 8-11. The students will
also participate in a tie-dye costume
making session with the artists.
The public is invited to the culminating event
for this year's Artist-in-Residence program
on Thursday, January 11, 2018. There will
be a performance of music and dance
by the sixth graders with Steve Ferrais
and James Marshall at 6:30pm in the
Henniker School gym. This performance is
free and open to the public.
The Artist-in-Residence program for sixth
graders at the Henniker program is made
possible by funding from the Henniker PTA,
and the taxpayers of Henniker.
