1 JANUARY 2021 COMPILATION Appointments(Person in news)- Soma Mondal takes charge as new SAIL Chairman The Election Commission of India has chosen Umesh Sinha as its deputy election commissioner. The Railway Board has named Suneet Sharma as its new Chairman and CEO. Justice Pankaj Mithal has been named the next Chief Justice of the Common High Court of Jammu for the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Alexander Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, has been appointed. The Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Arup Kumar Goswami, was sworn in. Dr. Raj Iyer, an Indian-American, has been named the US Army's first Chief Information Officer. Hima Kohli has been named the Telangana High Court's first female Chief Justice. Sikkim High Court Chief Justice JK Maheshwari is sworn in. Guwahati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia has been appointed. RS Sharma has been chosen as the chairperson of a Covid-19 vaccine administration committee. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname, will be the chief guest during India's Republic Day parade. Sadyr Japarov wins the presidential election in Kyrgyzstan. Pat Gelsinger has been named as Intel's new Chief Executive Officer. President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has been re-elected for a sixth term. At the Republic-Day parade, Bhawana Kanth will become the first woman fighter pilot. Joe Biden was elected 46th President of the United States. Siddhartha Mohanty is named managing director of LIC by the government. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal is re-elected for a second term. Kaja Kallas will be Estonia's first female prime minister. Swaminathan Janakiraman and Aswini Kumar Tewari are the new MDs of SBI. SBI's new MDs are Swaminathan Janakiraman and Aswini Kumar Tewari. Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is re-elected to a second term. The Government of France organised the fourth ‘One Planet Summit’,which aimed at protecting the world’s biodiversity.The Summit was organised in cooperation with the United Nations and the World Bank.The theme of the Summit was “Let’s act together for nature!”. Government Schemes/Projects- Madhya Pradesh's government has introduced a 'Launch Pad Scheme' for boys and girls who have passed 18 years of age and have left child care institutions. The state's Women and Child Development Department created this programme with the goal of providing a platform for these young people to become self-sufficient by completing their education and training. 5 JANUARY 2021 COMPILATION Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 450-km Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline.The event marks an important milestone towards the creation of One Nation One Gas Grid. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan launches ‘PANKH Abhiyan’ for Girl Child.‘PANKH Abhiyan’ is a year- long programme. The letter in the PANKH scheme stands for:‘P’ – protection,‘A’ – awareness of their rights,‘N’ – nutrition,‘K’ – knowledge,‘H’ – health. PM Narendra Modi has launched Rs 1,000-crore ‘Startup India Seed Fund’. This initiative will help in setting up new startups and promote their growth.The Startup India Seed Fund would support startups in need of initial capital to start and grow their business and help budding entrepreneurs pursue innovative ideas.The scheme will be implemented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DIIT). Science and Technology- To fight the problem of space trash, Japan plans to launch the first wood-based satellite by 2023. Finance- The Indian economy is expected to contract, according to the World Bank in the year 2020-21, by 9.6%. India's GDP estimate for FY21 has been revised downward to -8 percent by the IMF. According to the United Nations, India's economy would increase at 7.3 percent in fiscal year 2021. Defence- A Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) defence system was successfully tested by India and Israel. The DRDO develops the ASMI, India's first indigenously developed 9mm machine pistol. India will buy 21 MiG-29 fighter jets and 12 Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets from Russia. The indigenously developed "SAAW"Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon was successfully tested by the DRDO. The bilateral air exercise by Indian Air Force and French Air and Space Force conducted at Air Force Station, Jodhpur – Ex Desert Knight-21 Indian Navy conducts exercise AMPHEX – 21 with Army and Air Force. Nitish Kumar launches the state's first bird festival, dubbed "Kalrav," in the Nagi-Nakti bird sanctuary in Bihar's Jamui district. Prakash Javadekar has designated the year 2021 as the Indo-French Year of the Environment. Haldwani, Uttarakhand, is the site of India's first pollinator park, which was dedicated by famous butterfly specialist Peter Smetacek. Miscellaneous- In Bhubaneswar, Naveen Patnaik inaugurates India's first "Fire Park." The AIIMS in Bhubaneswar has won the Kayakalp Award Scheme for promoting cleanliness, hygiene and creating sustainable practices in public health facilities. Donald Trump becomes the first U.S. President to be impeached twice. Kerala becomes 8th State to complete ease of doing business reforms and joined the seven other States namely, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, who have completed this reform. Rajnath Singh unveils India’s 1st indigenously developed driverless metro car. Over the childcare subsidies controversy, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his whole Cabinet resigned recently. India’s 1st Labour Movement Museum to be set up in Alappuzha,Kerala. Gujarat to Rename Dragon Fruit as ‘Kamalam’. The ‘Netaji Express' has replaced the Howrah-Kalka Mail. Uttarakhand CM, Trivendra Singh Rawat will inaugurate the first child-friendly police station which is meant to provide a friendly environment to children associated with crimes. In Ahmedabad, Amit Shah officially opened the new 4-lane Thaltej-Shilaj-Rancharda railway overbridge. India’s longest Road Arch Bridge “Wahrew Bridge” inaugurated in Meghalaya. The Election Commission has begun issuing “e-EPIC” computerised voter ID cards. India’s First ‘Gender Park’ in Kozhikode,Kerala. Rakshita is the name of the bike-based casualty vehicle developed by the DRDO's Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences and handed over to the CRPF. Khadi Prakritik Paint is India's first cow dung paint having antifungal and antibacterial characteristics, which was launched by Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari.
