Ardrossan Community Hospital Inc Seahorse Times Message from Jodie Hello Everyone, September I Welcome to Spring - with all this wonderful rain, I think our garden is going to be amazing, I hope that the farmers will be happy and I truly hope that NSW and QLD get some relief 2018 very soon as well. As we talked in the residents meeting, we have had our Aged Care Accreditation and I am pleased to say that we met all the 44 standards required to run an Aged Care Facility - this is a huge effort in todays Aged Care environment. I personally had no doubts we would do ok and I feel that all the staff that work here do an amazing job. There will always be some minor hiccups, but nothing that can’t be fixed. Special thanks to Amanda who runs such an efficient ship, but she can’t do this on her own and I also want to thank all carers, ancillary, nurses and maintenance for taking on Amanda’s vision and direction. I think what Amanda has taught us and always reinforces that Dinham is a home not just an aged care home and this was truly obvi- ous from the feedback we received from the auditors. You will see that there is a sur- vey report in this newsletter on how Dinham rates - they were great results. We have had yet another sad month - but this time it is our animals that we have lost. Gordon Short - 6th Sandy our 15-year-old cat and our 6 chooks thanks to very cunning foxes. Pet therapy Dawn Duncan - 21st is so important so we will be getting another cat and definitely chooks. Dave is just Lorraine Maynard - 25th getting the Coop fox proof – then we will get 4 girls. We are looking to get a rescue cat, the cat must be toilet trained and people friendly. The official opening to the Family Lounge and the Seahorse Memorial Service will be on 21st of September at 11am. Everyone is invited to this event to celebrate the beautiful people that we have had in our lives and opening this amazing room. On this day, we are also recognising staffs years of service. We have 3 staff that have worked here at Ardrossan for 35 years - this is just amazing - I will let you guess who they are - hint 1 Registered Nurse and 2 Kitchen Girls. Our Father’s Day raffle has been drawn – congratulations to Sharyn Sims. Many thanks to the staff, families and residents that donated towards the raffle and the crew who sold tickets down the street. All the money raised goes towards items such as craft Don’s and entertainment. Our dining room occupancy is growing so we are in the process of renovating the Rainfall room and buying a another table – Amanda is looking at all the seat allocations making sure everyone is happy where they are sitting. Footy finals are here, good luck if your team is playing - Wendy Grahams grandson plays for Melbourne - first time they have played in finals for 12 years. Bernie is injured now but hopefully he gets a run as this is his final year playing AFL footy. It was exciting for Ardrossan Footy team making the prelim finals -our very own Glenn didn’t think that they would do any good as he booked an overseas holiday – bet he is regretting that. Our Netballers didn’t do that well either Bec, Sarah, Amy and Kayla aren’t playing any finals either - there is always next year. Have a good month everyone, Keep Safe & Keep Warm. Love Jodie 310 pts
Month of September September is the ninth month of the year in the modern day Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month kept its original name from the Roman calendar in which septem means “seven” in Latin marking it as the seventh month. September was named during a time when the calendar year began with March, which is why its name no longer corresponds with its placement in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. As the ninth month of the year, September marks the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere (and the start of spring in the southern). Traditionally considered the month that marks transitions between seasons, it is often one of the most temperate weather-wise. It’s easy to overlook a wild clump of Forget Me Not because most plants produce small flowers. However, this humble plant has a rich history of meaning behind it. As a symbol of myth and history alike, it’s a worthwhile addition to your flower repertoire. Learn more about what the Forget Me Not symbolizes by taking a stroll down memory lane. The morning glory flower is a flower of duality. The Victorian meaning of morning glory is either love or mortality or love in vain. They are a hardy vine indigenous to south America and they worked their way northward and now are either cultivated or grow wild throughout the united states and most parts of the world. A twining vine that will tenaciously latch onto anything vertical, there are over 500 varieties of this perennial flower. Some are grown as annuals but they are actually a perennial flower. Solid colors, bi-colors, strikingly outlined and double morning glories are available along with some very unique cultivars. This plant establishes itself in any sunny vertical position, so be careful when planting. It tends to outgrow everything. Asters are a genus of flowers from the Asteraceae family. It includes about 180 species of flowering plants. All asters produce clusters of tiny daisy-like flowers. While wild asters are typically run the purple and blue range, cultivated varieties may be pink, blue, purple, lavender and white. As cut flowers, asters have a long vase life and may last up to two weeks. Patience, love of variety, elegance and daintiness represents the Aster.
Important Information First Day of Spring The spring flowers are blooming and the days are longer and warmer, the magpies are swooping and butterflies are dancing in the sunshine. Spring is one of the four conventional temperate seasons, following winter and preceding summer. There are various technical definitions of spring, but local usage of the term varies according to local climate, cultures and customs. When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it is autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. At the spring (or vernal) equinox, days and nights are approximately twelve hours long, with day length increasing and night length decreasing as the season progresses. Spring and "springtime" refer to the season, and also to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. Fathers Day Many Australians observe Father’s Day on the first Sunday of September. Fathers Day celebration in Australia takes place in the same way as in several other countries around the world. Taking opportunity of the occa- sion, people express gratitude for father and thank them for all their care and support. Most often children gift flowers, neckties, chocolates or other gift to honor their dearest dad. Though the occasion is celebrated privately in households, several clubs and societies take initiative to organize special programs to encourage and entertain people. Breakfast meeting for families is a common feature of Father Day celebration in Australia. The Fathers Day raffle was won by Sharyn Sims—Congratulations. Val Ogilvy and Jodie Luke drawing the winning ticket Music for the Soul Music is food for the soul. It opens the door for self-expression, choice, and belonging. The use of music engagement in dementia care enables people who are living with a cognitive disability to make genuine connections. Music can provide comfort, emotional support and create a calming atmosphere but it can also create environments that encourage expression and creativity. We are asking for expressions of interest if anyone that can play an instrument or sing to be able to entertain our residents. We are so lucky to have some very talented and dedicated volunteers that sing, dance and play music but are always wanting to book some more.
