Day One City sights tour by bus Sunday 30 September - Hop on Hop Off Tour Arriving early at 5.05 am the group is transferred by coach to the Darlington Hotel - St. Paul’s Cathedral (or similar), close to Paddington Station. After checking luggage and a light breakfast - Darlington Hotel at the hotel, the group spends some time relaxing at Hyde Park nearby and takes a leisurely stroll to Kensington Palace and activate a 48 hour pass to board a London Check-in sightseeing bus tour with The Original Tour. Time permitting there will be opportunities to stop and explore some of the sites along the way that include Buckingham Palace and the London Eye but the focus will be St Paul’s Cathedral where the group will disembark. St Paul’s Cathedral At 111 metres high, St. Paul’s was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1967. St Paul’s is the second-largest church building in area in the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral. With a daily service and prayer times scheduled hourly there will be a chance to take a period of reflection. After lunch nearby the group returns to the hotel on the Original Tour bus. Sites along the way include London Bridge, The Thames and The Shard. After a refresh at the hotel have an early dinner locally and early night. Day Two Victoria and Albert Museum Monday 1 October - V&A After breakfast a 20 minutes walk South of Hyde Park, The Victoria and Albert - Tate Modern Museum (V&A) is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. Boasting 4.5 million objects in its collection and 145 gallery spaces within the museum our visit will focus on the highlights among the permanent displays of the museum’s Fashion, Textiles and Prints Collections during a two hour self-guided visit. Harrods Knightsbridge A short walk to Brompton Road Knightsbridge will allow for some souvenir shopping and collecting lunch from Harrods Food Halls before proceeding to The Millenium Bridge via the Original Bus Tour and walk across The Thames for a two hour self- guided visit to the Tate Modern.
Tate Modern Opened in 2000 the Tate Modern attracted 5.25 million visitors in its first year. The collection contains the national collection of British Art from 1900 onwards as well as modern and contemporary art from around the world. Special exhibitions feature the big names in international contemporary art as well as new and emerging British artists. The calendar for 2018 is TBC. After dinner locally the group packs in preparation for travel to Florence the next morning. Day Three London to Florence Tuesday 2 October - London to Florence The group has an early breakfast and check-out to meet a coach transfer to London - The Tour Studio City Airport, for an 11 am departure to Florence Peretola Airport. Lunch is available - Pensione Bencista to purchase on the flight or at the airport prior to departure. On arrival at Peretola Airport at 2.05 pm the group is met by The Tour Studio and transferred to the accommodation in Fiesole just outside Florence city. The Tour Studio The brainchild of Australian expatriates designer & educator Sarah Light and artist Simon Clayton, The Tour Studio runs specialised tours to artisan studios in the art and design capitals in Europe that include exclusive workshops in small groups for ‘fellow design and artisanal craft lovers’. Based in the neighbouring province of Umbria, Sarah and Simon and their Italian team have tailored a Tuscan experience especially for PLC Sydney based on a three-night stay including transfers and most meals in the Fiesole foothills that overlook the city of Florence. Sarah and Simon join the group during the visit. Pensione Bencista A family run guesthouse Pensione Bencista is located 5 minutes by bus from the town of Fiesole in the hills north east of Florence. With a 14th century villa at its heart the property is rich in character. Its original owners had strong connections with the famous Medici Family and it has had previous lives as a convent and an artists’ retreat. There are generous communal spaces including a terrace with breathtaking views across Florence’s stunning skyline. On arrival the group has some time to explore the property and become acquainted with Sarah and Simon who will provide an overview of the days ahead in Florence and Fiesole, before a traditional dinner served by the hotel.
Day Four Florence / Fiesole Wednesday 3 October - Florence Workshop Dividing into two groups the day’s activities are split between - Restoration Tour a workshop and walking tour in Florence city and an instructional painting session with an Italian artist in the Hills - Plein Air Fiesole of Fiesole. After a packed lunch the groups swap location and activities travelling between the sites by public bus. Giulio Giannini & Figlio - paper marbling workshop Founded in 1856, the artisan workshop Giulio Giannini & Figlio of Florence’s Piazza Pitti continues a family tradition spanning six generations. Known worldwide for its high quality hand-tooled leather book bindings, the firm produces many items in leather and paper. Students will complete a 1.5 hour paper marbling workshop under the guidance of Maria Giannini. L’Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro The Institute for Art and Restoration was founded in 1978 as a centre for specialisation and professional training in the field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage worldwide. The institute have agreed to open their doors for PLC Sydney during a 1 hour private tour of their laboratories. The organistion offers tertiary courses that attract students from around the world. It is located in an area of Florence known for its fascinating antiques stores. Plein Air Studio Gigli After a briefing at Bencista representative of the Giglio Art Studio Florence knowledgeable of the area escorts the group by public bus or on foot to a suitable location for a three-hour instructional workshop in painting plein air in the Fiesole Hills.
Day Five Florence / Fiesole Thursday 4 October - Plein Air Fiesole Continuing as two groups travelling by local bus between Florence and Fiesole - Florence Walking Tour students continue with their plein air painting in another three-hour session with the Giglio Studio and during a walking tour of Florence’s historic Centre partake in the following. Teatro della Pergola Considered the oldest opera house in Italy Teatro della Pergola is located in the centre of the city on the Via della Pergola. Built in 1656 the theatre was the first to feature tiers of boxed seating. Its present appearance dates from an 1855 remodelling with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium featuring three rings of boxes topped with a gallery. Seating 1,000 the theatre has hosted premieres of leading Italian composers including Guiseppe Verdi. Students will take a backstage tour looking at the set and costume design operations behind the scene. The tour lasts 1 hour leaving pleanty of time to grab a gelato and view the nearby Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore. Anitico Setificio Fiorentino Anitico Setificio Fiorentino is is a silk showroom and weaving mill in a villa set back from the street in the San Frediano neighborhood, a hub for artisan makers in Florence. In constant operation since 1786, with roots going back to the Renaissance It is not hard for visitors to imagine the looms producing the fine drapery featured in the paintings that grace the walls of the Uffizi. Still in operation the looms housed at Antico are either fully hand-operated or semi mechanized and the workshop features a working warper designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Day Six Fiesole Town Friday 5 October - Fiesole time After breakfast The Tour Studio recommend a brief visit to see the town centre of - Uffizi Museum and Fiesole which includes Roman amphitheatre ruins and sites believed to be where Galleria del Costume Da Vinci ran test launches of his flying machines. The popular Pasticceria Alcedo say Sarah and Simon is also not to be missed. museums - Opera evening event
Return to Bencista to meet a private bus transfer to Florence’s Hotel Pendini (or similar). After check-in, lunch and a brief explore of the local the local area en route to The Uffizi. Uffizi Museum The Uffizi Gallery is the must see for visitors to Florence. Located adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria it is one of the most important museum collections in Italy. It is also one of the largest and best known in art galleries the world, with a collection of priceless works, particularly from Italian Renaissance including Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Piero della Francesa and Fra Angelico. There may be an opportunity to take the infamous Vasari Corridor collection of self-portrait paintings to Palazzo Pitti at the end of the visit (TBC: limited public access & under restoration until 2018). Galleria del Costume Located in the Pallazzo Pitti museum complex the Costume Gallery was founded in 1983 and is home to more than six thousand pieces, including clothing and fashion accessories from the eighteenth century to the present. Its collection includes court and gala gowns, haute couture dresses, ready-to-wear clothes, as well as theatrical and cinematic costumes. The museum represents the history of fashion over the last few centuries and also includes creations of the most famous designers of the twentieth century, such as Valentino, Versace, Armani, Missoni and Saint Laurent. Opera Evening After refreshing at the hotel the group ventures out locally for a special dinner to celebrate the beginning of their city stay, followed by a performance of well-known opera arias at St. Mark’s Anglican Church near the Arno.
Day Seven Perugia Day Trip Saturday 6 October - Day Trip By chartered bus the group travels to the city of Perugia stopping first at the Perugina Showroom and factory for a 1 hour chocolate course / 3 hr chocolate tempering course by the creators of the much beloved Baci. After exploring and sketching the picturesque town, the group returns to Florence in the afternoon via the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. Day Eight Half Day trip to Siena by train Sunday 7 October - Half Day Trip Siena Siena is one of Italy’s most beloved medieval cities and one of the world’s most visited tourist sites. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Siena’s heart is its central square Il Campo where the red brick Palazzo Pubblico and its 14th Century tower presides over the town. The Siena Cathedral (Duomo), begun in the 12th century, is a masterpiece of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture, its main façade completed in 1380. Return to Florence by mid-afternoon to enjoy time at the hotel and local area before dinner locally. Day Nine MITA (Made in Tuscany Academy) Monday 8 October - MITA Made in Tuscany Academy runs two year fashion design courses in Florence with an - Accademia Gallery impressive rate of graduates going on to find immediate placement with industry - Ferragamo and Gucci leaders such as Gucci. PLC Sydney has a unique ongoing partnership with MITA Museums who, as part of developing an international aspect to their course, made four places available to PLC Sydney students in 2017 for a six-month gap program aimed at inspiring and opening our students to the world of Italian Fashion. A representative joins the group and will be available to answer questions for those students who may be interested to find out more about similar future opportunities with MITA.
Accademia Gallery The Accademia Gallery is another of the most visited museums in Florence. Notable for its many masterpieces created by the genius Michelangelo, and above all, the spectacular statue of David. Five meters tall and originally intended for placement on the roofline of Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, the statue stood in the Palazzo Vecchio for almost 400 years before being transferred to the Accademia in 1873 for conservation where it has remained since. Ferragamo Museum Dedicated to the life and work of Florentine shoe-designer-to-the-stars Salvatore Ferragamo, this small museum is located in one of the city centre’s finest private palazzos. It contains 10,000 models of shoes created by the designer from the 1920s until his death in 1960 as well as films and special exhibitions, media archives and clothing from the 1950s to the present day. Internships and workshops for recent grauates in the fields of cultural heritage and conservation are also run from the centre. Museo Gucci A short walk from Ferragamo is the Gucci Museum. Over three levels of a palazzo on the famous Piazza della Signoria, the museum is dedicated to chronicling the company’s innovations, bold branding and marketing approaches and development of its accessories to become an international name in fashion. There is also a contemporary art gallery space within the museum. Currently closed perhaps for renovation therefore this visit is still TBC. Day Ten Florence - Sydney Tuesday 9 October After breakfast and check out there is some quiet time in the morning to do some - Souvenir Shopping relaxed shopping and photography in the local area and pick up some lunch before - Return London meeting an airport transfer bus transfer to Peretola from the Hotel at 12.30 pm. - Depart Heathrow 9.35 pm The group boards the flight to London City at 2.45 pm to meet a private coach at 4.00 pm to transfer the group to Heathrow Airport, arriving with some time to shop and dine at Heathrow before the group departs at 9.35 pm. Thursday 11 October Arrival in Sydney at 6.10 am Thursday 11 October Proposed cost: $6,500.00 per student. Flights, accommodation, breakfasts & dinners and activities included.
