Oleandro Villa la Pergola Florence Area / Province ●FLORENCE Population: 374,500 (men 47 %; women 53 %) Capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. It is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. Being on the main national railway lines, it is easily accessible from most important places both in Italy and abroad. The Florence "Vespucci" airport, where both national and international airlines stop, is located 5 Km. from the city centre. The main motorway, A1, connects Florence with Bologna and Milano in the North and Rome and Naples in the South. The motorway A11 to the sea joins it to Prato, Pistoia, Montecatini, Lucca, Pisa and all the resorts on the Tyrrhenian sea. There is also motorway which connects Florence to Siena. The climate is temperate but rather variable, with breezy winters and hot summers. The Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful countrysides in Italy and a famous wine production area. Founded by the Romans in the first century B.C., Florence began its rebirth after the decadence of the barbaric ages, in the Carolingian period, and reached its highest pinnacles of civilization between the 11th and 15th centuries, as a free city, balancing the authority of the Emperors with that of the Popes, overcoming the unfortunate internal dispute between Guelfs and Ghibellines. In the 15th century, it came under the rule of the Medici family, who later became the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. This in fact was the period when the city was at the height of its glory in art and culture, in politics and economic power. The Grand Duchy of the Medicis was succeeded, in the 18th century, by that of the House of Lorraine, when in 1860 Tuscany became part of the Kingdom of Italy of which Florence was the capital from 1865 to 1871. In this century, the city has once more taken up its role as an important centre for culture and the arts. ●MONTEPULCIANO - PIENZA - SAN GIMINIANO In the village of Montepulciano visit Antonio da Sangallo's San Biagio, a wonderful Renaissance church. You can then spend time walking the streets and feel what it was like to live in the medieval period. In Pienza, in the mid-15th century, Pope Pius II turned this out of the way hill town into a testing ground for the most advanced Renaissance ideas about urban planning. Take a morning to walk the streets before moving onto the next village. San Gimignano is a medieval town that owes its famous skyline to the rival families who tried to outdo each other by building taller and taller towers. Of the original 76 towers only 13 still survive today. Oleandro Villa la Pergola Region Toscana LUCCA:Lucca, LUCCA: situated in the centre-north of Italy in Tuscany, is a town of Etruscan and Roman origins. It enjoyed an era of great splendour at the beginning of the Christian era and the first circle of walls and the anphitheatre go back to this period. Lucca became a commune in 1162. In the XIII century the centre was enriched with many architectonic beauties, such as the beautiful mosaic that portrays the Ascension of Christ in the church of S.Frediano. The peace that reigned in Lucca in the XVI and in the XVII centuries helped the building of numerous and wonderful villas, such as Villa Mansi and Villa Torrigiani, situated on the lovely hills surrounding the town. One of the characteristics is the exposure to the south and the water games, being places of entertainment and pleasure. In the centuries before, the tendency was to build the villas just outside the town for security reasons, as they were times of wars and fights. At the end of the XVIII century, Lucca was under the power of Napoleon and it became a principality under the guide of Elisa Baciocchi, the emperor's sister. She was very attentive to the needs of the town and started the projects of the aqueduct and the botanic garden, that were eventually carried on by her successors. In 1817 Lucca passed under the rule of Borbone-Parma, in 1847 the town was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and around 1861 to the reign of Italy. During the time of Maria Luisa of Borbone-Parma, the present third circle of walls were converted into a public park, that you can still admire and enjoy today, and also a botanic garden was created. Lorenzo Nottolini, the architect protagonist of these works, elaborated brilliant solutions for the aqueduct and the anphitheatre, too. After the construction of the aqueduct, fountains of great artistic interest were built all over the town that even today are in perfect conditions and the water running through them still comes from the old 19th century aqueduct. AREZZO :In Arezzo you will see traces of different civilizations and traditions: the Etruscans, the roman and the medieval. Petrarca, Piero della Francesca, Luca Signorelli, Giorgio Vasari were all born here. In Arezzo you can see Piero della Francesca's famous fresco cycle depicting the Legend of the Cross. These are the frescoes that Juliette Binoche gets to look at while dangling from a rope in the movie "The English Patient."A visit to this part of the region allows you to discover, besides the artistic, architecture and religious beauty, the little medieval villages located in this area.If you hire a car you can follow the wine route: for about 200 km through various wine growing areas: Chianti DOCG, Chianti Colli Aretini DOCG, Colli Etruria Centrale DOC, Valdichiana DOC and Cortona DOC as well as Vin Santo. You will see vineyards, olive groves, tobacco plantations, chestnut trees and for. SIENA:Situated SIENA: 322 m. above sea level in the heart of Tuscany, this town is built on thriller hills, maintaining intact its medieval appearance characterized by narrow winding streets and noble buildings. Of Etruscan origin, it was a Roman colony with the name of Sena Julia; its importance grew in the Middle Ages, first as the seat of Lombard gastalds, and then of Counts under the Carolingian domination. After a long period of episcopal dominion (9th-11th century) the town reached a peak of power after becoming a municipality (1147), undertaking a policy of expansion towards the bordering territories. Confrontation with Florence was inevitable and the struggle lasted, with various vicissitudes, until 1555, when after a long siege, Siena was conquered by the Florentines, losing its autonomy and becoming part of the Duchy, sharing its fortunes until unification with Italy. PISA: During the Roman époque Pisa was a prosperous sea-town, however, the barbaric invasion left the city in ruins and only when the citadel became a free town did it acquire, with the passing of time, more political and economical independence. The XI and XII centuries were a time of splendor; in this period, the city had primary importance inside the Italian peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea thanks to its maritime business and the conquering of Sardinia, Corsica, and several Balearic Isles. In the major tourist attraction in Pisa is of course the leaning Tower along with the Baptistery and the Camposanto, all of them built between the XI and the XII century.
