It's good to be Irish!(or at least Scots-Irish like myself)
There is so much to do this month to celebrate our Irish heritage and
NACHS is leading the way. You will find all the great events listed in
this newsletter as well as where you can visit online to find out more.

Nachs has decided to spice things up a bit at meetings! Starting in February, the last 30
minutes of the meeting will be a more social event where we get better aquainted and learn
some Celtic culture along the way. This month will have an Irish theme and that means one
thing ...fun! If you haven't been to a meeting for a while, now is a good time to come and be
a part of the fun.
Next Meeting: March 3rd, 6PM Thorpe Park Adult Center

Kari Barton is offering to teach an adult Irish dance class if there is
enough interest. Please contact her at 928- 600-1365
St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th is believed to be the date of Patrick’s
death, although there is some doubt, most recent evidence points to 493
AD as the year. Patrick’s spectacular success in converting Ireland from
a pagan to a Christian land, as well as the body of legend that
developed around his work have ensured that he is commemorated in
Ireland and wherever Irish immigrants have settled throughout the world
                 —from Boston to Singapore

THANKS for the HELP!

A hearty thanks to everyone who made the Burns Supper a great success! There were
folks who donated items for the silent auction, who helped plan and make it happen. And
a special thanks to Graeme Niven from Arizona Kilts, Michael Donelson, Megan
McPherson and the Knockabouts who entertained us all!

Looking for HELP!

Tea with Diana Gabaldon is coming and we need help in the way of a bartender. New
this year we will be serving alcohol at the tea (March 7 from 2 to 5). We are also looking
for someone to help with ticket taking and finalizing silent auction items at the end of the
tea. If you are interested in helping out please call Jude at 556-3161

Learn Gaelic! Richard Ferguson continues to teach a weekly conversational Scottish
Gaelic class for beginning and intermediate speakers, using the Teach Yourself Gaelic
materials. In the classes, students can pick up Scottish cultural and historical information!

Adult Center, 245 Thorpe Rd.

Bottles and cutlery needed! Don’t throw away those empty plastic water and soda bottles!
Save them for NACHS! We are gathering clean, empty, small water and soda type bottles
for a plant project for SOAR INTO SPRING. Help NACHS teach kids about growing
things by donating bottles we can use. We also need old metal spoons and forks to make
wind chimes for SOAR INTO SPRING. This is recycling at it’s best. We will use loads of
neat old stuff to make cool wind chimes! If you have items to donate call Jude at 928-556-
3161.

The Grand Canyon Celtic Arts Academy is really excited for its inaugural year bringing some fantastic musicians
from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to teach a two day workshop in July and perform at the Northern Arizona Celtic
Highland Festival. The workshops will take place July 15 and 16 and will offer instruction in Irish fiddle, flute,
penny whistle, DADGAD guitar, Irish tenor banjo, and bodhran.
Devin has been playing music since the age of five and
Instructing the fiddles will be Devin McCabe.
has been involved in traditional Irish music for approximately 10 years. He began fiddle instruction
under Milwaukee native Ed Paloucek and Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll and has taught himself the
concertina and whistle in recent years.
Teaching Irish flute and penny whistle is Brett Lipshutz. Based in Milwaukee, Brett has been playing
various flutes for over 25 years. He has played Irish and Baroque music for 15 years. Brett has twice played at
the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and toured with the Trinity Irish Dance Company. In addition to involvement in
theater projects, school outreach programs and many recordings and radio broadcasts, he is an active teacher.
Brett most recently returned from Paris, France, where he taught flute and whistle at the Association irlandaise.
Teaching Irish DADGAD guitar, Irish tenor banjo, and bodhran is Randy Gosa. Randy has studied music with
several musicians such as Liz Carroll, Silé Shigley, Andy Irvine, Tony Nother, and has studied at the University of
Limerick, Ireland with Niall Keegan and Sandra Joyce. In addition to being a string musician since the age of 12,
Randy is a graduate of Visual Art and Celtic Studies from the UW-Milwaukee. He is also an active céilí and set
dance musician in Milwaukee and teaches at the Irish Fest School of Music.

  Tartan Day Celebration
Tartan Day will be here soon! On April 5 at 2:00, we will meet at Charlys in the Weatherord

your tartan to decorate the tables and the room. Please attach a note to it identifying the tartan
(example: Macleod hunting, McKenzie modern, etc.).

If you have ideas for other Tartan Day activities or would like to help with the event, please
  contact Stephen Riggs at St_Riggs@yahoo.com.

Celtic Picnic!

We are organizing a fun Celtic day out going to the V Bar V petroglyphs near the Sedona exit off I-17 on
March 21st. Why you ask? There are interesting glyphs illuminated by the sun (only for a few minutes)
with connections to the spring equinox and our own Ken McIntosh will be giving a talk on celestial
observances and similarities with ancient cultures. FASCINATING STUFF! So, here’s the deal. If you are
interested in joining the party the Celtic Society will provide a picnic lunch but you must call Jude so that
she can organize the food. There is a $5 parking fee when you get there AND you will have to walk half a
mile from the parking area to the actual glyph site, but the walk is not hard. We will meet at about noon.
If you would be willing to give someone a ride for sharing the gas cost, call Jude also. If you need a ride,
guess who you should call? Jude 928-556-3161.

      land to Elizabeth I.
