 Candlemas
 2 February 2020
 Welcome!
If you are new or a visitor please introduce yourself to one of
those welcoming at the door. We are pleased to have you
with us. There is a children’s corner in the side aisle for
babies and young children, and changing facilities are available.
As today is an all-age service there is no Junior Church.

Today
Growing in Christ at St Peter’s: Our sermon series continues this week. We
will be using Steve Chalke’s book Intelligent Church to help us to reflect on what our
church is like and what we feel God is calling us to be. This week’s topic is
Transforming Church.

Youth Café is being held today in the vicarage from 11am until 12pm. A discussion
group led by Ruth Dearnley, all 14 – 19 year olds welcome.

The Wedding Preparation Course is being held here today starting at 2pm.
Please pray for long and happy marriages for all those being married in the church this
year.

This Week
Lectio Divina – Tuesday 4 February at 8pm - takes place in the church library.
Please join us as we use this traditional Benedictine method to read and reflect on
scripture. A quiet evening to promote communion with God and to increase our
knowledge of the living word. All are welcome.

Family Fridays - The next session will be held on Friday 7 February (5-7pm)
Our theme is Love! (What else could it be?) Plan on coming? Contact Lara Jubb
(lara.jubb@icloud.com) or Sarah Brandt (Sarah_jupp@hotmail.com) with your phone
number to be added to the What’sApp group to organise food each time.
Notes on the Services
 An INDUCTION LOOP is installed for those who require it and LARGE
PRINT versions of our service booklets are available. A collection is taken as
part of our offering of worship. This directly supports our ministry & mission. If
a UK tax payer, we would be grateful if you would consider placing your gift in a
gift aid envelope, filling in your details and signing. This will enable us to reclaim
the tax that you have paid on the donation.

Anthem O thou the central orb – Charles Wood
O thou, the central orb of righteous love, Pure beam of the most high, eternal Light, of this
our wintry world. Thy radiance bright, awakes new joy in faith, Hope soars above. Come,
quickly come, and let Thy glory shine, Gilding our darksome heaven with rays divine. Thy
saints with holy lustre round Thee move. As stars about Thy throne, set in the height of God's
ordaining counsel, as Thy sight, Gives measured grace to each, Thy power to prove. Let Thy
bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, Our nature all shall feel eternal day. In fellowship
with Thee, transforming clay to souls erewhile unclean, now pure within.

Friends of St Peter’s
An invitation to join The Friend’s Organising Group
The Friends of St Peter’s has operated in its modern form since 2010 and over that
period has organised an annual programme of social and cultural events. At the same
time, mainly through our Summer and Christmas Fairs, we have raised an estimated
£50,000 in support of projects in and around the church. Our success depends largely
on support from both within and outside the church community with the small
organising group leading by example. The group is made up of people with busy lives
who take on a fair share of the work, and derive enjoyment from getting involved
and satisfaction from the results.
We are currently at least one person short on numbers and in order to maintain our
effectiveness need one or two like-minded individuals to join us. For more details
please have a word with Becky Gillibrand, Ulrike Leigh, Laura Turner, Lin Johnson,
Graham Jones or Robin Farrar.
Building work at St Peters … or SPRING!
(St Peters Reworked - Inspiring New Growth)
For every house is built by someone,
but the builder of all things is God.(Hebrews 3:4)
As many of you know, improving our facilities at St Peters is a major part of
our goal to develop our building to meet our church’s growing needs now
and in future. The permissions and planning for improvements for any
building like ours take time and care and a dedicated team has been working
hard to make our vision a reality, and we’re excited to share an update.
The formal name for works on a church is ‘Reordering’, not very inspiring -
so we have named the whole project SPRING – an acronym of
‘St Peter’s Reworked – Inspiring New Growth.’
SPRING is a long-term and ambitious programme – and we have decided to
do the work in stages, making it easier to manage and to minimise
disruption to ongoing activities. The first phase of work will start after
Easter. This will include improvements to the vestry area and enables all our
future plans to take place. There will be new areas for the flower and
sanctuary guild and a new mezzanine area to provide much needed storage
space. A new entrance will be created in the chancel opposite the Octagon
entrance. This extra space allows us to make improvements to the Octagon
and nave. The church office has plans available for anyone who wants to see
more. We are planning ways to share all the SPRING details with you very
soon – look out for more information.
Approval for these works has been applied for and we await permission
from the Diocese to go ahead, and right now we are in the process of
choosing who will do the work. If you have any questions, please see
Natalie Liley, Den Parker or Revd Mark Dearnley for further information.
