Shining the Light Welcoming. Growing. Caring. All with Joyous Hearts. Announcements for March 4, 2020 THIS SUNDAY AT FROM OUR RECTOR: THE REV. DOROTA WRIGHT- ST. ANDREW'S PRUSKI Dear ones, As concerns mount about the possible spread of coronavirus, you'll notice a few changes here at St. Andrew's as we do our part to keep you safe and healthy while at church. First, you'll soon see hand sanitizer bottles in all gathering spaces, including the nave. Please use them whenever you're at church and don't have ready access to a sink and hand soap. Second, we're adjusting how we share Christ's Peace with one another during the service. As the diocesan guidelines below suggest, a fist bump, elbow bump, and friendly wave are all 8:00 AM acceptable ways to greet one another in the name of the Lord. Contemplative Worship You may also simply say, "Peace be with you" to fellow 9:00 AM worshipers and greet them with a smile. On a related note, I Adult Choir urge you to limit hand-to-hand touching as much as possible 10:00 AM when we gather, especially if you start to develop cold or flu Choral and Family Worship symptoms. 11:15 AM Children's Choir Rehearsal Third, we are no longer practicing intinction, which is the 12:00 PM churchy word for dipping the communion bread into the wine St. Andrew's Players before consuming it. Studies consistently show that intinction rehearsals is less hygienic than drinking from the common cup because 12:00PM the bread has much more contact with one's hand than wine Your Faith, Your Life session does with one's lips. One study found that people who receive communion via the common cup as often as daily are not at higher risk of infection compared with persons who do not READINGS FOR receive communion at all. Our chalice bearers at St. Andrew's will use best practices as identified by the CDC, including SUNDAY: wiping the interior and exterior rim of the chalice between The Second Sunday communicants, using a clean cloth for each service, and rotating both the chalice and the cloth during use to further in Lent diminish risk of disease transmission. That said, in the Episcopal Church, communion in one kind is considered a full First Reading: communion, so if you prefer to not drink wine you can still Genesis 12:1-4a make a full communion each Sunday by simply receiving the bread. The way to indicate your desire to not receive wine is Psalm 121 to place your arms across your chest. Second Reading: Lastly, because I distribute the bread, I will not be shaking hands on Sunday mornings, and I will use a 70% alcohol-based Romans 4:1-5, 13-17 hand sanitizer before I set the table for communion. As much
as I love hugs and handshakes, I love you and your health more, and I recognize that my first responsibility is for your Gospel: safety. Counters: Today we lift up the stories of two martyrs, Perpetua and her Ted Edwards companion Felicity, whose feast day is this coming Saturday, Warren Marton March 7. The following is a summary of her story as written in Lesser Feasts and Fasts. Unlocking/Lockup Vibia Perpetua was a young widow who, along with her companion Felicity, was preparing for baptism near the turn of Duty Officer: the third century in Carthage. At the time, Emperor Septimius Severus issued a decree that all persons must sacrifice to the divinity of the emperor. Christians refused to do this and were Ted Edwards (Open/close on imprisoned under terrible conditions as a consequence. Mar. 8 & 9) Jean Lynn At her public hearing, Perpetua boldly declared "I am a Christian." She and her companions were sent to the arena to be mangled by wild animals, including a leopard, a boar, and a bear. Perpetua is said to have cried out to her companions, St. Andrew's "Stand fast in the faith and love one another. And do not let what we suffer be a stumbling block to you." Episcopal Church
The Rev. Dorota Eventually all were put to death by the sword. The report of Perpetua's gruesome death concludes, "Perhaps so great a Wright-Pruski, woman, feared by the unclean spirit, could not have been Rector killed unless she so willed it." O God the King of saints, you strengthened your servants Quick Links: Perpetua and Felicity and their companions to make a good confession, staunchly resisting, for the cause of Christ, the St. Andrew's Website claims of human affection, and encouraging one another in their time of trial: Grand that we who cherish their blessed memory may share their pure and steadfast faith, and win with them the palm of victory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PROGRESS Our Growing Seasons Capital Campaign officially concludes in October of this year, and donations continue to come in every month from those who have made pledges to elevator and renovation effort. Because we anticipate all work on the elevator being completed by mid-May, we ask those who have not yet fulfilled their pledge to consider whether they might be able to fulfill it by the time our final bill is due to our contractor in May. This will minimize the amount we will need to borrow as a bridge loan to carry us through until the capital campaign concludes in the fall. :: Thank you to all those who are continuing their commitment to this project, as well as to those who have already fulfilled their pledge! We could not to any of this without your generosity and support. Thank you! If you have not yet contributed to the Capital Campaign, it is not too late to join this effort! Checks can be made out to St. Andrew's with "Capital Campaign" in the memo line. FAMILY MINISTRY Dear ones, Welcome to a holy Lent! What a beautiful morning we enjoyed together last Sunday as we walked prayerfully into Lent together. We listened to Matthew's account of the time Jesus spends in the wilderness after his baptism, and the story of his temptations by the devil. We thought together about what Jesus' time of prayer and fasting must have been like, about his confrontation with the devil, and how that relates to our own lives as we journey through our own time of prayer and fasting in Lent. We emphasized to each other that Lent is a time for us to focus more, on our relationship with God and with ourselves and with our loved ones. Together, we wrote a covenant to help us commit to our version of a holy Lent, to listen more and to pray more. Here are some of the things we wrote down: -say one kind thing each day to my family -spend ten minutes praying each day -say one thing I'm grateful for each day -eat less sugar, eat more peas! -read more -clean my room -give up meat Thank you for your generous spirits and for your dedication to making our Lent as prayerful as possible. I support us all in our Lenten commitment and cannot wait to check in together this Sunday. We will sing, pray and listen to God's word as we journey along in Lent!
