2 GARP now March 2020 REV. DAVID GRIFFIN continued from page 1 Message And following in the spiritual footsteps of Ebenezer and Ralph Erskine and the other Seceders, we Associate Reformed Presbyterians believe and practice PASTORAL the same. We know not whom God, in His sovereign grace, has chosen unto salvation. So, we freely proclaim the gospel to all who will hear the good news of Cares & THE “A” IN ARPC God’s forgiveness of sins. We believe that whosoever will believe, will be saved – by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Concerns The free offer of the gospel is what drives the foreign missions work of the ARPC – and thus why we (Greenville ARP) support Jodie and Tina Gaston in their work When I am talking with people who are not familiar with our denomination, I sometimes jokingly say, “You have to know in Wales, Elinor Griffin in her work in France, and Frank and Emily van Dalen in Remember these your ABCs, when it comes to Presbyterian denominations!” their work in Lithuania. The free offer of the gospel is what drives the church members in your There’s the: planting work of the ARPC – and thus why we (Greenville ARP) support Jay prayers. But what does the “A” (Associate) in our name mean? As many of you will remember, Sharon and I had the opportunity in June of 2018 to participate in the ARP Heritage Tour of the British Isles. We spent two weeks traveling through parts of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic Financial Update of Ireland learning (or, at times, hearing again) about various aspects of our denomination’s Scottish roots. As we traveled along in our tour bus, Dr. Dale Johnson, Dr. Leslie Holmes, and Dr.-to-be John Paul Marr (all of Erskine Theological Seminary), provided us with helpful insight into the people and places of these islands that played major roles in who we January 2020 Actual Budget Prior are as ARPs. Total Receipts $61,522 $100,520 $71,417 And two of these people were the Erskine brothers, Ralph and Ebenezer, for whom our denominational college and Total Disbursements 96,928 98,210 80,331 seminary are named. Totals $(35,406) $2,310 $(8,914) One of our days in Scotland took us to the town of Dunfermline in County Fife. There, we toured the Dunfermline Abbey. It was at this church where Ralph Erskine was the minister from 1716-1740. [And as an added point of interest, Robert the Contributions for January were under budget $39,000 and 14% behind the prior Bruce (Robert 1 – King of Scotland) is buried…wait for it…under the present-day pulpit!] year. January is often an atypical month and not necessarily a good measure On another day (a rainy one!), as we traveled across the Scottish county-side, we traveled to County Perth and Kinross, of contributions for the year. The current year budget assumes a level amount to the village of Gairney Bridge, near Kinross. One thing we learned along the way is that there might not actually be a of contributions over the prior year. Expenses in total are slightly favorable to “Gairney Bridge” in Gairney Bridge! But what makes this little Scottish town historically significant isn’t whether there is a budget year-to-date. bridge there or not, but that it is the site of the formation of the Associate Presbytery – thus the “A” in ARPC. In December of 1733, Ebenezer Erskine met with James Fisher, Alexander Moncrieff, and William Wilson, to discuss matters that led to their secession from the Church of Scotland. This group was known as the Seceders. The Seceders were concerned with two particular matters. The first had to do with what is called Patronage. This practice allowed the landowners (or Patrons) the control of the appointment of ministers to the churches in their area. The second and ultimately more important matter concerned the free offer of the gospel. These four Scottish ministers argued that the gospel is to be offered to all, freely – that is, in the preaching of the gospel, there was not to be the requirement that one first had to show signs of being elect before the gospel could rightly be offered to him or her. continued on page 2 1 GARP now March 2020
