Week of September 2, 2018 15th Sunday after Pentecost CHURCH DIRECTORY PHOTOGRAPY You’re invited to be a part of our new photo directory. Our last directory was printed in 2014. As you look around you today, you will see that we have new families. There have been weddings, and babies, and kids who are young adults now. We’re changing, and a new photo directory will help us capture these changes. Go to windcrestumc.org to schedule your appointment. Our directory won’t be complete without you! Sign up today. Volunteers are needed to help with the new photo directory! If you have a few spare hours on any of the days that the photographers will be here, please consider helping out. We need a couple of people to work in 2-3 hour shifts, to sign in each participant when they arrive for their photography appointment. If you are willing to help out, please call or email Marcy at the church office, 210-654-0404 or m.williams@windcrestumc.org. Or, see her at the Lifetouch sign up table in the Gathering Place today. 2018 FALL BAZAAR—Saturday, October 13, 2018 There will be vendors, crafts, Pumpkin Patch, games, rummage sale, silent auction, and much more! This ministry began in 2000 at Bethany UMC on Eisenhauer near I-35. It provides our homeless neighbors a safe place to get out of the cold when temperatures reach 32 F and below. They also provide: A warm appetizer at check in at 5 pm. A Laundry and showers A clothing pantry A hot meal at 7 pm Breakfast and a sack lunch to go. The neighbors are gone by 8 am. Each winter, the number of days the shelter is open depends on how cold the weather is. Last year it was only open 4 times with 30-40 clients each time. Bethany UMC is a small church so any donations help keep this ministry going. They need a commercial washer and dryer to replace their old ones. They always need men's white socks, gloves, hats (darker colors), men's jeans, general assortment of clothes, and warm jackets. They also need, laundry detergent, paper plates, bowls, plastic utensils, toilet tissue, paper towels, paperback books and magazines. If you would like to help financially, write your check to Windcrest UMC and mark it Cold Weather Shelter or CWS. 3/September 2, 2018
Disciple Bible Study One of my greatest joys in ministry has been teaching Disciple Bible Study. I have taught every year except one since my ordination, and I learn something every time. So even if you have taken it before, I encourage you to take it again. For years Windcrest has had a Morning Bible Study, and they have asked me to continue this tradition. I propose one of the classes for the 2018-2019 year meet at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. If there are 10 to 14 people who would like to meet at another time, I would be more than happy to teach another group. All groups would need to start the week after Sunday, September 9 so we can be finished before Memorial Day. Please let the church office know if you can attend the Wednesday morning class or feel free to propose another day and time. Disciple Bible Study may not be like any Bible study you have done before. Disciple is about transformation, not information. People are invited to be challenged and comforted. We will explore how the Hebrew scriptures of the Old Testament support the New Testament, and now the New Testament in turn illuminates the scriptures of the Hebrew Bible. Each class is 2 ½ hours long, spending the first 30 minutes or so exploring the human condition and asking how scripture can be relevant in our lives. There will be a short video presented by a well-known scholar and then an in-depth study of one of the readings assigned for the week. The end of the class each week will be spent looking back at the human condition established at the beginning and asking how the scriptures we have read and studied through the week can help us on our faith journey. We will learn how we can live as Christians in the contemporary world around us. We will be looking and studying the Bible from beginning to end leaving a focused study of individual books for another day. It would be very difficult for most of us to read the entire Bible in 34 weeks, so we will read samples of all the major portions of the Bible. We will look for a continuous theme and message from Genesis to Revelation. By limiting the class to between 10 and 14 people, each person will have time to speak out and be heard while minimizing those awkward moments of silence. I hope you will join with me on this incredible journey, and we can get to know each other in a meaningful and personal way. During our time together, we will become part of a community of believers who have learned to listen to each other in love and trust. See you Sunday, Jim 4/September 2, 2018
WE NEED RUMMAGE Have you recently moved or plan on moving in the near future? Are you down-sizing, organizing your garage, doing fall cleaning, or have things you no longer need? What better way to recycle your gently used items than to donate them to UMW’s Fall Rummage Sale to be held Saturday, October 13th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All donations except clothing and shoes will be greatly appreciated. Due to lack of available storage space, we are unable to accept rummage donations until Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the bazaar week (October 10, 11, 12) in Room 301. Should you have any questions, or need help getting your things to us, please contact Jeanette Green 210-854-2289 or Sue Strickland 210-637-6809. As usual, all proceeds will go to UMW missions. Spaghetti Sauce In an effort to keep the Windcrest UMC pantry sufficiently stocked, we are asking for the following donations each month. First Sunday – Jelly Second Sunday – Saltines Third Sunday – Pasta Sauces Fourth Sunday – Canned Vegetables Fifth Sunday – Beans/Rice (in great need of bags of rice and beans) If you feel led to help out, please consider these donations when you are out doing your grocery shopping. We will have a table or cart in the Gathering Place each Sunday to collect the items and stock the shelves of the pantry. Thank you so much for your help and support of our Neighbors Helping Neighbors ministry. To see video please go to www.windcrestumc.org or the Church Facebook. 5\September 2, 2018

SOCIAL CORNER As we approach Labor Day this week – we focus on issues that face the laborers of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Below is an excerpt from the United Methodist Women’s website: “Income and wealth inequality in the United States impacts women and communities of color, which, in turn, further marginalizes those who may already be vulnerable. Decades of poor policy choices got us to this point. Fair and just policy changes now could reverse the income and wealth gap. United Methodist Women are called [to] act locally and in national efforts to begin to bridge the inequality gap. United Methodist Women is engaging in education to better understand these changes in economic policy and how they impact women, youth and children. We will be exploring these realities in our communities, state, and nation and taking action to seek greater equity and dignity, living wages, sustainable livelihoods and economic security for all.” “God remembers those who suffer; He does not forget their cry, And he punishes those who wrong them. … The needy will not always be neglected; The hope of the poor will not be crushed forever.” (Psalm 9:12, 18)” Marilyn Olivarez, Social Action Coordinator, WUMW HELP US KEEP OUR PLANET GREEN RECYCLE Ink cartridges, cell phone, iPad, tablets, iPhone There is a box on UMW table in the Gathering Place.
