1st April 2021 KHS News Messages from the Headteacher As we approach the end of the Spring Term, I am extremely proud of the resilience of our students, staff and families. We spent Christmas planning for mass testing that was then delayed by the government, entered a last-minute national lockdown requiring an immediate switch to remote learning, oversaw almost 4000 on site COVID-19 tests and have recently experienced a peak of local cases, requiring some year groups to finish the Term with a final few days of remote learning. Thank you for your patience and understanding! At every stage, we have sought to act decisively and to communicate quickly. We have also continued to focus on our long-term school improvement priorities and we have much to be proud of once again: 5870 live lessons during lockdown 94% of students attended live lessons compared to 34% in April 2020. We have created and launched our Year 11/13 grading system We have sent out more Year 7 offers than last year and Sixth Form applications have doubled. Looking ahead with optimism – new DHT and Chelsea FC We also have much to look forward to. After Easter, our new Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Ribbans-Opara joins us, and will work closely with our existing Deputy Headteacher, Miss Gibbs. The Senior Leadership Team will be at full capacity for the first time since October 2020. I am also delighted to announce an extraordinary new association for our school. Chelsea FC Foundation has been successful in its tender application to run the Odyssey Trust for Educa- tion Football Academy, based here at King Henry School. KHS and Chelsea FC Foundation will now finalise the terms of the association to enable our Sixth Form Football Acade- my students to be coached by Chelsea FC coaches, to wear the Chelsea badge and to compete at the highest levels of school football from September 2021 – good luck to all stu- dents who are participating in trials over the Easter break! Students in younger years will also have opportunities to work with Chelsea FC Foundation. Blue is the truly the colour here at KHS! Return to School: All students return to school on Monday 19th April 2021 at our usual staggered times: KS3 – to be registered in tutor time at 8.45am KS4/5 – to arrive at 9am for extended tutor time We will begin the Summer Term with an extended Tutor Time, focusing on students well-being and mental health. This will last for Period 1 for all students on Monday 19th April. Have a wonderful Easter break! Best wishes, Mr R Leitch Headteacher (rleitch@kinghenry.org.uk) rleitch@kinghenry.org.uk

Information regarding SMS messages sent from Arbor. On Monday 22nd March 2021, Arbor will be switching their SMS provider. This is following some is- sues in relation to Virgin, Tesco, GiffGaff and Sky mobile accounts not being able to reply to SMS sent through Arbor. This means that a new bank of numbers will replace the current numbers we use to send SMS messages from via Arbor. Please do not reply to any messages stored in your phone prior to Monday 22nd March. The old num- bers will continue to work for 1 week, but after 29th March 2021 they will be switched off. Anyone who responds to an old SMS from one of these numbers after 29th will receive a reply asking them to contact us school via alternative means. We are delighted that 33 students have so far signed up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. This is open to all students currently in Year 8, with the programme starting in September 2021.We already have some very en- thusiastic students forming their own expedition groups and thinking about where they would like to do their two- day expedition hikes! This is an amazing opportunity for students to develop skills, physical activities, volunteering and outdoor naviga- tion, camping and cooking. Enrolment is open until 5 May and deposits are due by this date as well. Students and par- ents can get more information from Mr Martin in AT2B or by email at mmar- tin@kinghenry.org.uk. When we returned to school we thought about ways to encourage positivity in school and keep our school community happy. We talked about what we thought makes a good teacher and then wrote our favourite teacher a note to tell them!!

Message from PC Maria Evershed—Safer Schools Officer I’m sure some of you may have seen me around the school lately, but I would like to officially introduce myself as your new Safer Schools Police Officer. My name is PC Ma- ria Evershed. I have been a Police Officer for approximately 22 years and have worked in many different areas within the Metropolitan Police Service, this has given me quite extensive knowledge and practical experience in helping and supporting all members of the community in various ways. My primary role as a Safer Schools Officer is to provide advice and support to students and teachers in relation to advice around crime and its prevention, through various different forms for example presentations and talks. My main priority is to build strong and lasting relationships with students and teachers and to prevent our students from getting into any negative incidents and situations which could possibly warrant police intervention. I want to create a positive role model for our students and will always be happy to give any advice and support as when needed by any of student, teacher or parent. I look forward to working with you all in safeguarding our young people as they are ultimately our future.
Join our new Youth Board I’ve been thrilled to receive excellent submissions from students at King Henry to join our new Arts and Culture Youth Board, but I’d love to have more! The board will comprise students from both schools (Townley Grammar and King Henry) who will contribute to how we develop our arts activity across the trust. If you’re passionate about the arts, creativity and culture I’d love to hear from you. Members of the Youth board will help with the upcoming Arts and Culture Festival in July, help get our magazine and podcast started and be part of new films we will be creating in the summer. If you’re interested you just need to answer the two questions below and email a response to Dr Berryman by Friday 26 March at arts@odysseytrust.org.uk Look forward to receiving submissions to join the board! I’ll announce the board members on 31 March. Dr Berryman

At King Henry, we were very privileged to celebrate international Women’s Day on 8th March. Teachers nominated their favourite international women and we covered our cor- ridors with extraordinary women from all over the world who have so many extraordinary achievements. This was a great success, and was seconded by a competition set in RHRN for students. Their task was to find the posters around the school and facts about these women. It was amazing to see / hear some comments by our students. The most common was “oh, I didn’t know this woman!” I was very proud to help with this international event that gave even more confidence to our future great women of King Henry Mrs Dacoury-Tabley Global learning and International Lead
The DT Department has set the Year 7s and Year 8s with a challenge - build the tallest, freestanding structure made from 10 sheets of recycled A4 paper and some tape. Working in pairs, each class has raced against the clock to build the strongest/highest paper building. As you can see from the photos, this has proved to be a popular lesson, with many students reaching the classroom ceiling - thanks to some ingenious planning, paper folding and collaborative thinking. Students can look forward to more one-off lessons, like this, embracing Science Technol- ogy Engineering Art and Maths (STEAM) over the coming weeks.
Having lain dormant for 2 years, the workshops is finally back up and running. The Year 10 GCSE Re- sistant Materials classes were first to get out the tools and it was fantastic to hear the noise of wood and metal being cut up. In the photos you can see the students making a materials sample board - where the properties of all the different woods and metals are analysed, tested and recorded as part of the GCSE course- work. The Design & Technology department looks forward to welcoming all of our students back into the workshops as soon as it is deemed safe. All the tools and surfaces are clinically cleaned after each lesson.
