            SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Great Value Colleges Community Service Scholarship
Students are eligible to apply for a Mas Family
Scholarship if they were born in Cuba or are of direct
Cuban descent, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0
scale, are considered financially needy (as determined
by a specific formula that takes into account the
applicant and their family’s financial situation in terms
of how much they can contribute), and complete and
submit their application with all other required
             materials by the specified date.

                                 Likelihood of Success
Scholarship awards are based on the applicant’s academic performance, leadership
qualities, potential to contribute to the advancement of a free society, and their likelihood
of success in their chosen career.
                                Screening & Selection
Each applicant is evaluated through three-steps of selection. A screening process analyzes
and confirms their academic standing and financial need. Semi-finalists are selected based
on the strength of their application. Finalists are chosen from the pool by interviews and
character evaluations, and scholarships are awarded by a final selection committee.
                             Maintain the Prerequisites
Scholars may receive an award over four years of college, as long as scholars maintain the
prerequisites for receiving them. While full scholarships cannot be awarded to recipients
receiving full-tuition scholarships and/or stipendiary support from other sources,
recipients are still eligible for partial awards.
                                     Fields of Study
These scholarships are intended to support the studies of students in
engineering, international relations, business, economics, communications, and
journalism, who intend to pursue academic or professional careers, and who

American Dream

An American Dream Come True
The American Dream Scholarship helps the dream of higher education become a reality. This
scholarship picks up where other aid and scholarships leave off, ensuring that bright, qualified
students have the means to continue their education.
The scholarship is made possible by the generosity of members of the Greater Miami community.
These benefactors recognize the importance of a college education and are pleased to support the
quality education offered by MDC.

The Basics
Who is Eligible?
High school graduates who have earned a standard high school diploma, GED, or home school
diploma in Miami Dade County during the May-July 2020 period (without a previous degree).

What is Covered?
The in-state portion and eligible class fees remaining after all other scholarships, financial aid, and
grants funds have been applied.
Duration
The scholarship covers up to 60 credits toward the completion of an AA or AS, whichever comes
first.

                                         HOW IT WORKS

 • The scholarship pays only tuition and class fees and is not disbursable in cash.
 • Funds will be applied after all other scholarships, financial aid, and grants funds have been
     applied.
 • Students must enroll full time for at least 12 credits each fall and spring semester.
 • Out-of-state students are responsible for any additional out-of-state costs per credit, not
     covered by the scholarship.
 • Special fees for the Aviation or Culinary Arts programs are not covered.
 • Failed or withdrawn courses count toward the 60-credit limit of the scholarship.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you must be registered for a minimum of 12 credits each
Fall and Spring term. If you decide to enroll in additional credits during the semester, you must
contact us at 305-237-8888 or at ADS@mdc.edu to recalculate your payment award.

                          CLASS OF 2020 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 • You must earn a standard high school diploma, GED, or home school diploma in Miami Dade
     County.
 • You must currently reside in Miami Dade County.
 • You must be entering college for the first time or be a graduating dual enrollee.
 • You must have a cumulative high school weighted GPA of 3.00 or above.
 • You must be admitted to MDC and registered for 12 or more credits for the Fall 2020 semester.
 • You must complete the 2020-2021 Federal Financial Aid Application (FAFSA). You do not need
to be eligible for federal financial aid, but you must complete the FAFSA application. If you are
unable to complete a FAFSA application, please complete the Expected Family Contribution
Calculator. Email the results to your campus Financial Aid office.

 • You must prove college readiness by meeting one of the two criteria:
         1. Achieve minimum test scores on approved standardized tests. Any combination of the
highest available scores are used in determining your readiness in a skill area. Scores
within a two-year period of the test date are considered valid for eligibility purposes.
Expired scores will not be used. OR
         2. Have a cumulative high school weighted GPA of 3.5 or greater.
 • Students obtaining a standard high school diploma through Florida Virtual School will be
accepted if they reside in Miami Dade County.
 • GED recipients must earn the diploma during the time period of May - July 2020 in what would
be their senior year in high school.
 • Students without a GPA on their transcripts (e.g., home schooled) must earn the diploma
during the time period listed above and meet minimum test scores.

                                    APPLICATION PROCESS

 • No separate scholarship application is required.
• Apply for admission to MDC and complete the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA), but you do not need to be eligible to receive federal financial aid. Please
remember that it may take several days for MDC to receive your information even after you
request it. Therefore, please allow enough time for this to occur by the deadline.
 • If you are unable to complete a FAFSA application, please complete the Expected Family
Contribution Calculator. Email the results to your campus Financial Aid office.

MDC will be extending the American Dream Scholarship to all students who met eligibility
requirements for the Spring 2020 term.
Summer 2020
For the first time in MDC's history, the American Dream Scholarship will be awarded for summer
courses. There is no minimum credit requirement. The American Dream Scholarship will cover the
in-state portion of any credits that current American Dream Scholars enroll for during the summer of
2020. Enrollment in summer is optional.
Fall 2020
Current American Dream Scholars must do the following in order to maintain eligibility for the Fall
2020 term.

 • Complete the 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You do not need
to be eligible for federal financial aid but you must complete the FAFSA application If you are
unable to complete a FAFSA application, please complete the Expected Family Contribution
Calculator. Email the results to your campus Financial Aid office.
 • Register for at least 12 credits for the Fall 2020 term by August 31, 2020.

 • Be enrolled in an AA or AS degree program.

Failure to meet these requirements will result in the loss of your status as an American Dream
Scholar and you will not be awarded any funds you would otherwise be eligible for under this
program. There are no provisions for reinstatement. Once you lose eligibility, you will not be able to
regain your status as an American Dream Scholar. Remember that courses not passed or withdrawn
after the 100% refund date count toward the 60-credit limit of the scholarship.
